This review is of the Toho version, not the edited up US version. Godzilla has always been one of my favorite films. When I finally got to see the original version, it cemented it's place on that list of favorites. The only Godzilla to be nominated for a Japanese Academy Award (It lost to the Seven Samurai!) it still holds up well today as a horror of nuclear weapons and a not understanding the unknown film. Certainly among the best acted, written and directed of the Godzillas, it's also the darkest and most believable. Yes, it's a man in a suit. Yes, some of the sfx are seee through. But none of that matters to me. It's an intense drama that sucks the viewer in. I recommend owning it on Blu Ray.
