Japanese Box Office (as of 3/11/2023): 4.44 Billion Yen ($34.2 Million)

Japanese Box Office Attendance
(as of 3/11/2023): 2.99 Million

Although not a Godzilla film, I figured this would be an interesting movie to follow at the box office given Higuchi and Anno's involvement. Not to mention it is also the largest profile kaiju movie out right now.

UPDATE 3/11/2023:
It seems Shin Ultraman finished higher than we thought. World of KJ via Kogyotsushin reports the final number for the Japanese Academy Award winning film was 4.44 Billion Yen ($34.2 Million) and 2.99 Million in attendance. (RIGHT at 3.0 Million.)

It ended its run as 9th highest grossing film of the year. It is the 6th highest grossing domestic Japanese film of the year and #2 highest grossing live-action Japanese film of the year. It is the 9th highest opening of the year.

UPDATE 8/16/2022:
After 14 weeks, tracking for Shin Ultraman has ended with 4.38 Billion Yen ($33.7 Million) and 2.95 Million in attendance. It ends its run as 6th highest grossing film of the year so far. It is the 4th highest grossing domestic Japanese film of the year and #1 highest grossing live-action Japanese film of the year. It is the 9th highest opening of the year. It will likely drop a little, but remain in the top 10 highest grossing for the year.

We'll see if there's any change to its final total next February when the final numbers are released for every film.

UPDATE 8/12/2022:
No major updates from its 13th weekend. However, when Official Ultraman sources announced that Shin Ultraman would be getting a world wide release, it noted that the film had hit 4.38 Billion Yen and 2.95 Million in attendance. Not a massive move of the needle, but notable as it's from official sources.

Charts updated.

UPDATE 8/02/2022:
The 12th weekend actuals for Shin Ultraman saw it hit 4.37 Billion Yen ($33.6 Million). Attendance is 2.94 Million. Showings have been reduced to about one a day. Theaters are pulling it, but the studio has yet to announce an end date. Looks like it will just miss 3 Million in attendance.

Charts finally updated.

UPDATE 7/29/2022:
Details on the 11th weekend came up short for various reasons. A Toho Press Announcement lists Shin Ultraman at around 4.34 Billion Yen, putting it at an estimated attendance of 2.92 Million. According to Eiga Ranking Shin Ultraman is going into its 12th weekend with an estimated 4.36 Billion Yen and an estimated 2.93 Million in attendance. I'll update charts after this weekend.

UPDATE 7/19/2022:
Kogyotsushin reports Eiga's estimation was a little high. Monday was a Holiday, so the current actuals include yesterday as well. Shin Ultraman hit 4.31 Billion Yen ($33.1 Million) as of Monday with an attendance of 2.90 Million.

Sources expect it to finish around 4.5 Billion Yen--Though I'm skeptical it has another 190 Million Yen/100,000 tickets left in it. The film is expected to remain in theaters for another 2-3 weeks.

Charts Updated.

UPDATE 7/17/2022:
Eiga Ranking News has delivered the latest estimates for the 10th weekend. Shin Ultraman has, surprisingly, surpassed the 3.0 Billion mark before Monday with an estimated 4.32 Billion Yen. The estimated attendance is around 2.89-2.90 Million.

Actuals later.

UPDATE 7/13/2022:
Weekend actuals came late. Box Office Theory reports Shin Ultraman remained in the top 10 for its 9th weekend, falling from #7 to #9. Its total sits at 4.25 Billion Yen and 2.85 in attendance.

As of this writing theaters are starting to pull Shin Ultraman showings as more new releases crop up. It will likely fall out of the top 10 in its 10th weekend.

Charts updated.

UPDATE 7/10/2022:
Eiga Ranking gives early estimates for Shin Ultraman's 9th weekend with 4.242 Billion Yen and an estimated 2.84 million in attendance. Supposedly the film has fallen out of the Top 10, but is not expected to drop much in gross over weekdays.

Actuals tomorrow or Tuesday.

UPDATE 7/5/2022:
World of KJ via Kogyotsushin reports Shin Ultraman dropped from #4 to #7 in the top 10 of its 8th weekend. Not a bad drop given four new films were released. It stands at 4.17 Billion Yen. ($32.1 Million) Attendance sits at 2.79 million. As of this writing the film has overtaken Spider-Man: No Way Home in both attendance and gross.

The film is aiming for just under a 4.30 Billion Yen total for next weekend given it doesn't fall too dramatically.

Charts have been updated.

UPDATE 7/3/2022:
Eiga Ranking reports the 8th weekends estimates total at 4.164 Billion Yen--Higher than expected. It has surpassed the attendance of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2.77 million) with an estimated 2.79 million. It will surpass it in gross tomorrow.

The question it does it have 200,000+ more in it to hit 3 million?

Actuals and chart updates will be Monday or Tuesday.

UPDATE 6/28/2022:
Actuals report Shin Ultraman finished the 7th weekend with 4.03 Billion Yen. ($31.1 Million) Despite four new releases this past weekend it only fell from #3 to #4. Box Office attendance came to 2.70 Million tying Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. (World of KJ and Kogyotsushin) It's unlikely to hit Return of Godzilla's 3.20 million, but 3 million attendance is still not out of the question.

Next week it will top Spider-Man: No Way Home to become a top 5 film of 2022. Although it likely won't stay there, nothing indicates it will fall out of one of the top 10 highest grossing of 2022. It's still on track to finish with an exceptional 4.3-4.4 Billion Yen.

Weeks in the Top 10 (incomplete) Comparison:
Shin Godzilla - 11 weeks
Shin Ultraman - 7 Weeks (and counting)
Godzilla '14 - 6 Weeks
Attack on Titan - Part I - 5 Weeks
Attack on Titan - Part II - 5 Weeks
Godzilla: King of the Monsters - 5 Weeks
Godzilla vs. Kong - 5 Weeks
Kong: Skull Island - 4 Weeks

Charts have been updated.

UPDATE 6/26/2022:
Estimates from Eiga Ranking News report Shin Ultraman pushed passed the 4 Billion Yen mark in its 7th weekend! The benchmark puts the attendance slightly above my initial prediction with 2.69 million. It will hit or surpass Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah's attendance tomorrow. It still may barely miss the 3 million attendance, but that depends on the holds for the next 5 weeks.

Actuals will be released either tomorrow or Tuesday.

UPDATE 6/21/2022:
Actuals confirm a slight uptick for Shin Ultraman's 6th weekend. (World of KJ and Kogyotsushin) The film maintained its spot at #3 for the third weekend in a row. At 3.84 Billion Yen this week's exchange rate brings it to $29.7 Million. At 2.57 million attendance, Shin Ultraman is expected to finish around 4.3-4.4 Billion Yen--Perhaps just shy of 3 million admissions.

6th Weekend Comparison:

Shin Godzilla
6.02 Billion Yen/$58.4 Million/3.74M Attendance
Shin Ultraman
3.84 Billion Yen/$29.7 Million/2.57M Attendance
Godzilla 2014
2.99 Billion Yen/$29.3 Million/2.09M Attendance
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
2.70 Billion Yen/$25.6 Million/1.91M Attendance
Godzilla vs. Kong
1.81 Billion Yen/$16.5 Million/1.20M Attendance

Charts have been updated.

UPDATE 6/19/2022:
Early weekend 6 estimates from Eiga Ranking News put Shin Ultraman's total at 3.832 Billion Yen. ($28.4 Million) That attendance reaches an estimated 2.57 million, blowing well past both Son of Godzilla and Destroy All Monsters.

At this point I think Shin Ultraman only has one more prominent kaiju title it can feasibly top. It can pass the Heisei series savior, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah's 2.70 million attendance. (And will.) But I think it will be shy of Return of Godzilla's 3.20 million. It might hit 3 million, but it will be quite the crawl.

Either way this is a massive win for Tsuburaya Productions and easily the most successful piece of Ultraman media.

Actuals tomorrow or Tuesday. Charts will be updated then.

UPDATE 6/14/2022:
5th weekend actuals have arrived from World of KJ, via Kogyotsushin. Shin Ultraman had an outstanding hold. It remained at #3 for the second weekend in a row. (Top Gun: Maverick dropped to #2, dethroned by the latest Dragon Ball movie.) The estimates were accurate, with Shin Ultraman holding at 3.56 Billion Yen, which exchanges to $27.6 million today.

It's closing in on the 4 Billion Yen milestone. Should it get anywhere near that in its 6th weekend, it should surpass or equal Son of Godzilla (2.48M) and/or Destroy All Monsters (2.50M). It will also be very close to topping Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (2.70M). Additionally, it's also closing in on Spider-Man: No Way Home's final attendance. (2.77M)

Shin Ultraman is the 6th highest grossing film of the year in Japan. It's the 3rd highest grossing Japanese movie of 2022 and the 1st highest grossing live action Japanese movie of the year. Although the exchange rate to USD is at its lowest since 1998, it has easily outgrossed every giant monster/kaiju movie in the last 10 years with the exception of Shin Godzilla.

The point is it's now carving into the Golden Age (50s & 60s) and Heisei Series which are the two most successful eras of the Godzilla franchise. While attendance is slowing to a crawl, it's still in the top 3 at the box office and has many weeks of life left in it.

Charts have been updated with corrections to other movies as well.

UPDATE 6/13/2022:
5th weekend estimates are in from Eiga Ranking News. Shin Ultraman is at an estimated 3.551 Billion Yen (estimated $26.5 Million). The film received a massive percentage boost from its 4DX release this weekend, which gave it a Friday of 108% over the prior Friday.

Attendance is estimated at 2.39 Million. It has officially beat every Monsterverse movie and Champion Festival movie in both tickets and gross.

(As of Monday, it has sold an estimated 2.41 Million, meaning it has also topped every Millennium Godzilla film, including GMK, as well as Higuchi's Attack on Titan - Part 1.)

Should actuals hold, Shin Ultraman is now more successful than 52% of the Godzilla series. It is also more successful than every non-Godzilla kaiju/giant monster movie released in Japan in the last 10 years.

UPDATE 6/7/2022:
4th weekend actuals have finally arrived from World of KJ via Kogyotsushin. Three new movies were released this weekend, but Shin Ultraman only dropped from #2 to #3. It made another $1.97 Million, confirming its total was a little higher than the estimates had: 3.182 Billion Yen ($24.8 Million).

This brings the attendance a touch higher with 2.14 Million. It has topped the following Godzilla films:
Godzilla vs. Biollante - 2.00M tickets
Godzilla 2000 - 2.00M tickets
Godzilla: King of the Monsters - 1.95M tickets
Godzilla vs. Gigan - 1.78M tickets
Godzilla vs. Hedorah - 1.74M tickets
Godzilla x MechaGodzilla - 1.70M tickets
All Monsters Attack - 1.48M tickets
Godzilla x Megaguirus - 1.35M tickets
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla '74 - 1.33M tickets
Godzilla vs. Kong - 1.25M tickets
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. - 1.20 tickets
Godzilla: Final Wars - 1.0M tickets
Godzilla vs. Megalon - 0.98M tickets
Terror of MechaGodzilla - 0.97M tickets
Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters - < 0.17M tickets
Godzilla: The Planet Eater - < 0.14M tickets
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle - < 0.09M tickets

Attack on Titan - Part 1 and GMK are next on the chopping block.

As of this past weekend, Shin Ultraman is now the #1 highest grossing live action, Japanese movie of 2022. The #2 Japanese movie of the year, including anime. And #6 overall.

The 4DX release next weekend should boost some sales. Otherwise this week will probably be a slow crawl.

Charts have been updated.

UPDATE 6/5/2022:
Early estimates for the 4th weekend, from Eiga Ranking News, put Shin Ultraman at an estimated 3.173 Billion Yen ($24.2 Million). I will be adjusting the charts to better reflect gross in "Yen" rather than US Dollars. The reason being the exchange rate has fallen to an all-time low. It has never been this low 20-21 years!

This best example of this is comparing Shin Ultraman's current gross to Godzilla: King of the Monsters' final gross. Godzilla: King of the Monsters ended its run at 2.84 Billion Yen, which was worth $25.8 Million in 2019. But Shin Ultraman has exceeded that gross by around 300 Million Yen. Regardless, at the moment 3.2 Billion Yen is only worth $24.2 Million--Less than the USD exchange that King of the Monsters raked in.

(The exchange rate doesn't really effect domestic Japanese films, but for Hollywood films this is a big issue. While Hollywood movies are little more popular this year, compared to the last few, the exchange rate is forcing them to make less money for overseas studios.)

Meanwhile, Shin Ultraman's estimated attendance is at 2.12 Million. This might be higher, since my estimates were a little low last weekend and this past Friday. (The later of which is according to Natalie.)

Either way, this means Shin Ultraman has surpassed the attendance of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs. Biollante. It should take out the last, and most successful Monsterverse movie in Japan, Godzilla (2014), tomorrow. Attack on Titan - Part 1 and GMK are in its scope.

Actuals will be released either Monday or Tuesday. Charts will be updated then as well.

UPDATE 6/3/2022:
Heading into the weekend Shin Ultraman (according to Eiga Ranking News) is at an estimated 2.94 Billion Yen ($22.5 Million) and has surpassed Godzilla: King of the Monsters' 9+ week attendance climb in just 3 weeks w/ an estimated 1.96M attendance. (Likely higher since Natalie reported 1.92 million in attendance yesterday.)

3 new movies open this weekend, including the latest Gundam anime. However, Shin Ultraman gets released in 4DX next weekend which is quite popular in Japan and should boost sales next weekend. The new 4DX poster was released yesterday:

Also of somewhat related interest, the theme song for Shin Ultraman, "M87", was reported to be #1 on Japan's Billboard, via Natalie. A music video was released in celebration of both the song and movie's success:

Box office will be a little slower in its 4th weekend, but it should surpass the 3 Billion Yen benchmark! Actuals after the weekend.

UPDATE 5/31/2022:
Actuals from the weekend have come in and it looks like everything about Shin Ultraman is just a smidge higher than the estimates had. Kogyotsushin reports Shin Ultraman was 2.712 Billion Yen, which isn't too off, and still translates to $21.2 Million USD and extra change. Though it finally fell from the #1 spot in its 3rd weekend thanks to a strong opening from Top Gun: Maverick, Shin Ultraman holds strong at #2 right now.

The attendance is where things get interesting. I had previously reported the weekend's estimated attendance at 1.77 Million, just barely missing Godzilla vs. Gigan. Turns out it blew past it. Kogyotsushin and World of KJ reports the total attendance by this past Sunday came to 1.81 million.

This takes out all of the 70s Godzilla flicks and positions it overtake Godzilla: King of the Monsters' final attendance before the weekend. (As of today, Tuesday, it sits at an estimated 1.87 million in attendance, but I won't update numbers until after the weekend again.)

Below are more accurate 3rd weekend comparisons. Charts have also been updated.

3rd Weekend Comparisons:

Shin Godzilla:
3.36 Billion Yen/$32.6 Million/>2.59M attendance
Shin Ultraman:
2.71 Billion Yen/$21.2 Million/1.81M attendance
Godzilla: King of the Monsters:
2.21 Billion Yen/$20.5 Million/1.51M attendance

Godzilla 2014:
2.05 Billion Yen/$20.1 Million/1.42M attendance
Godzilla vs. Kong:
1.40 Billion Yen/$12.9 Million/0.90M attendance

I also noticed I had been using old attendance charts that didn't include Godzilla vs. Kong. Those have been updated as well.

UPDATE 5/29/2022:
As expected, Eiga Ranking News reports Shin Ultraman finished its third weekend surpassing $21 Million. It sits at an estimated $21.2 Million from the exchange of an estimated 2.693 Billion Yen. Though 5 Billion Yen might be a stretch goal, it definitely still puts it on track to exceeding 4 Billion Yen.

This brings the estimated attendance to 1.77 million. It has surpassed every 1970s Godzilla film, with the exception of Godzilla vs. Gigan (1.78 million), which it will pass tomorrow. (Monday) It will likely surpass Godzilla: King of the Monsters before next weekend where it is expected to blow by the 2 million attendance benchmark.

Actuals on Monday or Tuesday. (Hopefully.)

3rd Weekend Comparisons:

Shin Godzilla:
3.36 Billion Yen/$32.6 Million/>2.59M attendance
Shin Ultraman:
2.69 Billion Yen/$21.2 Million/1.77M attendance
Godzilla: King of the Monsters:
2.21 Billion Yen/$20.5 Million/1.51M attendance

Godzilla 2014:
2.05 Billion Yen/$20.1 Million/1.42M attendance
Godzilla vs. Kong:
1.4 Billion Yen/$12.9 Million/0.90M attendance

UPDATE 5/28/2022:
As announced, both Tsuburaya and Toho have released the first 1:17 intro of Shin Ultraman. Click here for more details.

In the meantime, Eiga Ranking News updated the film's gross with Friday's box office numbers. The movie now sits at an estimated 2.356 Billion Yen. (Estimated $18.53 Million.) The forecast for the weekend points to a $21+ Million total after Sunday. More as it comes.

UPDATE 5/26/2022:
The movie just can't be stopped. Eiga Ranking News reports that the movie maintained a solid weekday hold from last Wednesday which boosted its gross to an estimated 2.286 Billion Yen. (Estimated $18 Million.) This tops Kong: Skull Island's final gross of $17.7M.

More importantly the same source reports Shin Ultraman is now at 1.5 million in attendance. This tops All Monsters Attack's attendance total from 1969. In celebration of reaching so many tickets sold in 14 days, Tsuburaya is putting up a clip of the intro for the movie tomorrow on Youtube for 48 hours.

Top Gun: Maverick premieres this weekend and will likely add competition that Shin Ultraman hasn't had in the last two weeks. Tom Cruise is one of the last Western box office draws in Japan. But if Shin Ultraman's legs continue it shouldn't be too difficult for it to hit 2.0 million tickets soon. It's still on track to hit the 4 Billion Yen mark.

UPDATE 5/25/2022:
This is going to be something of a hodgepodge of information, since I still don't have the verified actuals. But the estimates have been pretty close lately.

Last weekend Shin Ultraman was #1 at the box office for the second weekend in a row with an estimated 2.027 Billion Yen (estimated $15.9 Million). (According to Eiga Ranking News)

By Monday, Eiga Ranking News reported the haul for Shin Ultraman pushed it to 2.1 Billion Yen, (an estimated $16.5 Million) making it the 3rd highest grossing, live action Japanese film of 2022 in just 11 days. A fairly substantial stat. Currently the 2 movies ahead are The Last 10 Years and Confidence Man JP. Both are within striking distance and sitting with less than 3 Billion Yen.

The Last 10 Years has been in theaters for 10 weeks, so it's not pulling away anytime soon. And Confidence Man JP is finished at the box office. Including animated (anime) films, Shin Ultraman sits at #5 for 2022. (Animation is notorious for being more successful at the Japanese box office though.) Including foreign films, it sits at #8 for the year--And climbing.

And then something happened Wednesday, according to the latest report by Eiga Ranking. There was a strange uptick in sales for Shin Ultraman today, which has pushed its estimated gross to 2.232 Billion Yen. The exchange for that amount is estimated for $17.5 Million USD! That's a massive uptick for a weekday in Japan and I'm not sure what caused the surge.

Comparing its opening weekend attendance to the current gross, Shin Ultraman sits at an estimated 1.4 Million tickets sold.

For comparison, Shin Ultraman has now sold more tickets than the following Godzilla movies:
Godzilla x Megaguirus - 1.35M tickets
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla '74 - 1.33M tickets
Godzilla vs. Kong - 1.25M tickets
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. - 1.20 tickets
Godzilla: Final Wars - 1.0M tickets
Godzilla vs. Megalon - 0.98M tickets
Terror of MechaGodzilla - 0.97M tickets
Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters - < 0.17M tickets
Godzilla: The Planet Eater - < 0.14M tickets
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle - < 0.09M tickets

Keep in mind, most of these movies either flopped at the box office, were merely skirting by due to a decline in Japanese cinema in the 1970s or were limited releases. Shin Ultraman is only in the middle of its second week at the box office.

To further illustrate what a juggernaut this movie is for the genre, Godzilla vs. Kong took 9 weeks to only hit 1.25 million tickets. Shin Ultraman is on day 13.

It has also beaten the following non-Godzilla kaiju/giant monster movies of recent years:
Kong: Skull Island - 1.34M tickets
Attack on Titan: Part 2 - 1.23M tickets
Pacific Rim - 1.03M tickets
Pacific Rim: Uprising - 0.61M tickets
Rampage - 0.30M tickets

If Shin Ultraman can get to the 3.0M mark, it will have outsold 22 movies in the Godzilla series, including every Legendary Pictures film and the entire Millennium Series.

Charts have been added and updated for comparison. Hopefully we'll get some actuals before the weekend.

UPDATE 5/20/2022:
Minor update, but it's worth noting that Shin Ultraman was the #4 top grossing movie in the world last weekend. Just another stat to notch onto Tsuburaya/Toho's belt going into a hopefully lucrative weekend #2.

UPDATE 05/16/2022:
Kogyotsushin, via World of KJ, confirms Shin Ultraman's numbers from the original post are accurate! The movie has opened with a staggering $7.7 Million three day opening. ($5.5 Million Sat/Sun opening weekend.) It currently sits at an attendance of 641,802 and should hit 1 million next weekend.

Shin Ultraman is Japan's biggest May opening in 11 years. It has beaten out The Superior 8 Ultra Brothers as the top grossing/attended Ultraman film of all time. And it is 3rd biggest opening for a kaiju/giant monster film in the last 10 years behind Shin Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Additionally, Shin Ultraman is the 5th biggest opening of the year and at its opening sits as the 17th highest grossing 2022 film in Japan.

Box office pundits and specials think it might hit the $40 Million mark, which would make it the biggest May release in 10 years. We'll see how the movie holds next weekend.

Original post:

First thing is first: May is traditionally one of the weakest months at the box office for Japanese cinema. Golden Week, a week long Holiday in Japan, gives a lot of films a big box office boost before May. As a result, the following month sees audiences less involved in movie going. Additionally, school is still in session during May.

That being said, Tsuburaya and Toho have a lot of confidence in this movie. It has been given the widest release of any May release since 2011, when Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opened to Japan's biggest May in history. It is the widest release any Ultraman movie has ever received, by a very wide margin.

Shin Ultraman's Friday opening was an estimated $2.2 Million (via Kogyotsushin), with the film jumping to an estimated $5.4 Million (via Eiga Ranking News) on Saturday and an estimated total of $7.7 Million (via Eiga Ranking News) for the three day weekend. Emphasis on the word "estimated" as actuals will likely not be available until Tuesday.

Even still, this makes it the third largest kaiju/giant monster opening in the last 10 years. It is already the highest grossing Ultraman film of all time. (Though, keep in mind, no Ultraman movie has had a release this wide in history. And most of the Ultraman movies of the last 20 years have been glorified episodes.)

The only other kaiju/giant monster movies that have had a bigger opening is Shin Godzilla with $8.2 Million (and finished with $79.2 Million) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters with $8.6 Million (and finished with $25.8 Million).

Keep in mind many movies in Japan are front loaded and the weekend drops in the next two-to-three weeks will say about how well it performs. Longevity is much more important at the Japanese box office than opening weekends. (Note: King of the Monsters opened higher than Shin Godzilla, but still disappointed. Meanwhile, Shin Godzilla is one of the highest grossing, live action Japanese films ever.) So while the opening is impressive (assuming the number sticks) the real test is in the next few weeks.

Strong late night showings imply it is appealing to casual audiences, not just fans and younger audiences--Which is how Shin Godzilla did so well.

Context:
Keep in mind, in Japan, attendance is the number to look for when observing final numbers. Not gross. Not all ticket prices are the same for every movie. Hollywood films are usually more expensive, for example. "Family films" are usually cheaper, for another example. Attendance numbers will be available as actuals are released.

Comparison:
Shin Ultraman (2022)
- Theaters (at opening): 268
- Opening weekend: $5.4 Million
- (Opening weekend counting Friday:) $7.7 Million
- TOTAL GROSS: 4.44 Biillion Yen ($24.2 Million)
- TOTAL ATTENDANCE: 2.99 Million

HinikunaGoji,
Those are average user ratings. Pretty good, Shin Godzilla got similar user reviews which helped bolster it to box office dominance.

Before going into the weekend, I want to address something I've been seeing a lot of lately.

English box office outlets are reporting that Shin Ultraman opened bigger than Shin Godzilla and this isn't exactly correct. They're specifically claiming that Shin Ultraman's opening 3-day total, which is $7.7 million, is bigger than Shin Godzilla's 3-day opening total. The problem is outlets like Crunchyroll aren't using Shin Godzilla's 3-day total, they continue to use its 2-day total of $6.1 million.

Once again, the confusion stems from the fact that the Japanese box office doesn't include Friday when reporting opening and following weekends. A "weekend total" means Saturday and Sunday no matter what. It's being lost in translation that Shin Godzilla's "weekend opening" is the Sat/Sun total of $6.1 million. But it's 3-day opening total is $8.2 million.

Now that doesn't mean Shin Ultraman didn't beat Shin Godzilla in something already. The three day opening attendance for Shin Godzilla was 564,332, whereas the three day opening attendance for Shin Ultraman was 641,802.

Seems that Ultraman is a movie that has lower ticket prices or the exchange rate has fluctuated to reflect something different. Either way, it's not unheard of for movies in Japan to make less money, but have higher attendance due to fluctuating ticket prices from movie to movie.

The point of this post, however, is to highlight that Shin Ultraman did not outgross Shin Godzilla's opening weekend. Attendance is another story.

UPDATE 5/20/2022:
Minor update, but it's worth noting that Shin Ultraman was the #4 top grossing movie in the world last weekend. Just another stat to notch onto Tsuburaya/Toho's belt going into a hopefully lucrative weekend #2.

Sonic should be ahead of The Bad Guys tbh.  Also, is Shin Ultraman playing in the US?

Top 10 charts have been updated.

3rd Weekend Comparison:

Shin Godzilla:
3.36 Billion Yen/$32.6 Million/>2.59M attendance
Shin Ultraman:
2.69 Billion Yen/$21.2 Million/1.77M attendance
Godzilla: King of the Monsters:
2.21 Billion Yen/$20.5 Million/1.51M attendance

Godzilla 2014:

Godzilla vs. Kong:
1.4 Billion Yen/$12.9 Million/0.90M attendance

It certainly will be. I expect it to hit close to 3 million in attendance, which would be huge. Especially for a May release in Japan.

The barometer for successful Godzilla movies probably starts at GMK, (granted, this is usually depending on the decade) so if it starts surpassing that and Attack on Titan, Shin Ultraman is an unprecedented success and the most significant, studio win for Tsuburaya since they won their 20+ year legal battle with Sampote.

UPDATE 6/3/2022:
Heading into the 4th weekend Shin Ultraman (according to Eiga Ranking News) is at an estimated 2.94 Billion Yen ($22.5 Million) and has surpassed Godzilla: King of the Monsters' 9+ week attendance climb in just 3 weeks w/ an estimated 1.96M attendance.

AdminGodzillaJun-05-2022 12:43 PM

UPDATE 6/7/2022:
4th weekend actuals have finally arrived from World of KJ via Kogyotsushin. Three new movies were released this weekend, but Shin Ultraman only dropped from #2 to #3. It made another $1.97 Million, confirming its total was a little higher than the estimates had: 3.182 Billion Yen ($24.8 Million).

This brings the attendance a touch higher with 2.14 Million. It has topped the following Godzilla films:
Godzilla vs. Biollante - 2.00M tickets
Godzilla 2000 - 2.00M tickets
Godzilla: King of the Monsters - 1.95M tickets
Godzilla vs. Gigan - 1.78M tickets
Godzilla vs. Hedorah - 1.74M tickets
Godzilla x MechaGodzilla - 1.70M tickets
All Monsters Attack - 1.48M tickets
Godzilla x Megaguirus - 1.35M tickets
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla '74 - 1.33M tickets
Godzilla vs. Kong - 1.25M tickets
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. - 1.20 tickets
Godzilla: Final Wars - 1.0M tickets
Godzilla vs. Megalon - 0.98M tickets
Terror of MechaGodzilla - 0.97M tickets
Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters - < 0.17M tickets
Godzilla: The Planet Eater - < 0.14M tickets
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle - < 0.09M tickets

Attack on Titan - Part 1 and GMK are next on the chopping block.

As of this past weekend, Shin Ultraman is now the #1 highest grossing live action, Japanese movie of 2022. The #2 Japanese movie of the year, including anime. And #6 overall.

The 4DX release next weekend should boost some sales. Otherwise this week will probably be a slow crawl.

Charts have been updated.

AdminGodzillaJun-13-2022 10:14 AM

AdminGodzillaJun-13-2022 9:12 PM

UPDATE 6/14/2022:
5th weekend actuals have arrived from World of KJ, via Kogyotsushin. Shin Ultraman had an outstanding hold. It remained at #3 for the second weekend in a row. (Top Gun: Maverick dropped to #2, dethroned by the latest Dragon Ball movie.) The estimates were accurate, with Shin Ultraman holding at 3.56 Billion Yen, which exchanges to $27.6 million today. (Any other year it would've exchanged to around $35 million.)

Minor update:
I've finally compiled an Ultraman Film series chart based on gross. USD is not included right now as the massive flux in exchange rate from year to year would not be accurate. Attendance is not included either since these were fairly small releases and none reached 1 million. Those numbers are difficult to find at this point.

Clearly, cinema is not where the franchise thrives. Most of the movies are glorified episodes not worth pushing into a lot of theaters since it doesn't take much to make back the TV-based budgets. Additionally, Toho's distribution was critical to Shin Ultraman's success. Toho owns the majority of theaters in Japan and Tsuburaya's deal with them gave Shin Ultraman a wide release--Especially compared to prior films.

Additionally, the last seven years of Ultra films have basically been long episodes, most not worth a rewatch. (Though I did enjoy the R/B movie more than its series.) Tsuburaya hasn't had much incentive to push movies like this into a wide release. So the majority made less than 100 million yen.

To be clear, I'm not saying, "Ultraman movies are bad." On the contrary I plead for more to watch the excellent and criminally underrated The Next. Superior 8 is a beautiful film and the Zero Trilogy will take your virginity. But the last decade has been filled with cheaper TV products pushed into few theaters.

Shin Ultraman seems to have been the right revitalization at the right time:

6th Weekend Comparisons:

Shin Godzilla
6.02 Billion Yen/$58.4 Million/3.74M Attendance
Shin Ultraman
3.83 Billion Yen/$28.4 Million/2.57M Attendance
Godzilla 2014
2.99 Billion Yen/$29.3 Million/2.09M Attendance

UPDATE 6/21/2022:
Actuals confirm a slight uptick for Shin Ultraman's 6th weekend. (World of KJ and Kogyotsushin) The film maintained its spot at #3 for the third weekend in a row. At 3.84 Billion Yen this week's exchange rate brings it to $29.7 Million. At 2.57 million attendance, Shin Ultraman is expected to finish around 4.3-4.4 Billion Yen--Perhaps just shy of 3 million admissions.

6th Weekend Comparison:

Shin Godzilla
6.02 Billion Yen/$58.4 Million/3.74M Attendance
Shin Ultraman
3.84 Billion Yen/$29.7 Million/2.57M Attendance

UPDATE 6/26/2022:
Estimates from Eiga Ranking News report Shin Ultraman pushed passed the 4 Billion Yen mark in its 7th weekend! The benchmark puts the attendance slightly above my initial prediction with 2.69 million. It will hit or surpass Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah's attendance tomorrow. It still may barely miss the 3 million attendance, but that depends on the holds for the next 5 weeks.

Actuals will be released either tomorrow or Tuesday.
