Soylent Green took place in 2022. Do you think we might be close to this point? After all, 1984 has rung true in many ways. This is what strikes to the core of sci fi imo. How about you?

That's something very interesting to think about. I agree that this subject is the heart of the genre of sci fi, but that doesn't mean 70's / 80's futuristic sci fi was very accurate...
