1954-2004: Animations for a new generation

I've been thinking. Godzilla has gotten some new movies since they brought him back to the big screen, but I think that Toho should make the movies from 54-04 for a whole new generation. Most kids don't know who Godzilla is, except for the new movies, but what if they did if they saw the old ones today, with todays technology. Like animations of Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster or Godzilla:2000. What are your opinions and what do you think todays generation and others to come should should now what the old movies were like, without the guy in the rubber suit and now digital.

Or...we could just show new generations the actual movies as they are in their purest form. Y'know, just a thought.

But what if in the future, we can only watch movies digitally and those movies don't exist now. What then?

Why?

One of the entire reasons to watch Godzilla is for the style of special effects that was employed at the time. Godzilla is not just the king of tokusatsu, but he is tokusatsu. He's only a pauper to digital effects. Replacing the hard work Tsuburaya, Nakano and their teams put into these movies largely defeats the purpose.

Movies, not just Godzilla films, but every movie, is made for a specific time and audience with a specific style in mind. If you change that, you might as well just make a different movie.

So no. I think George Lucas-ing the Godzilla series is among the worst ideas in the long sad history of bad ideas. Just have kids watch and experience the movies as they are--They're exactly as they're meant to be and they're great.

We already watch the old movies digitally. It's called DVD, Blu-ray and streaming.

I know that, but what i- You know what? Nevermind. You guys just answered it for me. I just thought that kids wouldn't want to watch two guys in rubber suits beat the shit out of each other and that they would want to watch it like Pokemon or The Godzilla Anime series or VR. But you guys don't think that would be a cool idea so ....

G. H. (Gman) This. All of this! I mean, I don't mind the more recent Godzilla films having CGI, I like how expressive they can get with the monsters, but for the love of everything, leave the originals alone!

No point in redoing the originals; they're already there for people to enjoy. Also, I know this is anecdotal, but my little sister watches the older movies with the rubber suits just fine (she's only turning 5 in February), so I think little kids can get past that. Heck, a good portion of US did as well at some point (myself included). In fact, that might be some of the appeal for a child, like how it's part of what makes us like them NOW. It really does just depend on the child and their age as for whether or not they're not going to watch a movie for bad special effects. Oddly, REALLY YOUNG children don't have a problem, but at 7 or 8 I think they do have a problem if they weren't brought up liking some of those older movies... then as adults they can appreciate them again. It's a little ironic... but then again, I might not know what irony is.

Yeah, I show plenty of the older films to younger kids and they eat it up--Literally they can not take their eyes off of it. It's the makings of some new fans.

Why remake something that already works as well as it does?

Okay, since apparently nobody is on your side here, I'll toss my hat in the ring.

While I don't think full remakes are a great idea, I would definitely be on board with them doing a series of animated shorts, a sort of highlight reel in the same vein as Star Wars' Galaxy of Adventures, utilizing the old audio but reinvigorating the action with the freedom of animation, either 2D or 3D. As an example, here's the Battle between Luke and Vader from Empire Strikes Back. I think a series like this with Godzilla would be fantastic, I know there are some fights across the series that could definitely benefit from this kind of uplift, Godzilla vs Hedorah or MechaGodzilla II come to mind.
