Intro:

Ah, it has been a while since I have posted a topic on here. Sorry guys, just have been a little busy lately, but lately, I have been thinking about one of the most iconic human protagonists in the Godzilla franchise, Dr. Serizawa. Both the 1954 Daisuke Serizawa or the Monsterverse Ishiro Serizawa version of the character are iconic figures of the series, but after Godzilla: King of the monsters 2019, where do we go with his character and his legacy in the Monsterverse? That is what I am going to explore today with a concept.

Also, KotM spoiler warning if anyone hasn't seen it by now.

Now let's address the elephant in the room here, Serizawa in the Monsterverse is dead, but I think this decision by legendary was way better than some people give it credit for. Most of us, including me, wanted to see Ishiro Serizawa lose an eye, get the iconic eyepatch from his predecessor and become the character that unites the movies together, but the problem with this concept is that this would make Ishiro Serizawa seem like a ripoff of Nick Fury. Killing the character off to a similar fate like his predecessor was a smart move by legendary although I would have rather waited till Godzilla VS Kong for this to happen. Now with that out of the way, let's get to the concept.

The past (Also TL/DR):

My concept looks at the tragic fate of Serizawa. Not Ishiro Serizawa, but his father who tragically died during the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing of 1945, Daisuke Serizawa. Daisuke Serizawa was a scientist who studied elements and their effects on other objects and organisms. He lived and worked in the city of Hiroshima and was in love and engaged to Emiko Yamane, the daughter of a fellow scientist and colleague, Kyohei Yamane. Emiko whilst she likes Daisuke her heart belongs to a sailor and friend of Daisuke by the name of Hideo Ogata.

Odo island:

After hearing rumors about the fishing community and the mutated sea life that has been appearing around an island close to Hiroshima called "Odo island", Daisuke went on a science expedition to the island to do some research. After speaking to some of the Island's natives, he found out that the mutated sea life has been apart of the island's history single before it was even discovered. He learned about an ancient myth about a giant creature known as Gojira who has roamed on this earth longer than any documented species. Some of the natives claimed that Gojira still lives on as they supposedly had seen giant spikes and a blue light emitting from the ocean, but these natives were thought to be crazy. Daisuke didn't believe these myths because of how unlikely the existence of a creature of this size was. After doing some research on the history of the island he was confused, because of the lack of any documented form of source for the radiation around the island except for one location around the hills of the island.

Gojira:

Not long after, Daisuke alongside his fiancé Emiko, her father and Hideo who helped Daisuke by using his boat to get to the location where a presumable source might be located and dives towards this area to hopefully find some answers whilst Emiko stays in the boat to makes sure everything goes to plan. Whilst on the bottom of the ocean, Daisuke finds nothing which could have caused the mutations when all of a sudden a giant object blocks the sunlight from above followed by a giant blinding blue light and weird growling noises. Then when the light starts to dim a giant eye opens right in front of him. The creature swims away and Daisuke gets brought back to the surface whilst shouting one name, Gojira! After this encounter, Daisuke got obsessed with this creature finding out about more myths about these giant creatures that used to roam the land, the skies and the seas with one name reappearing throughout these as a creature so powerful it could defeat any threat which would go against natures will, Gojira. Daisuke tried his hardest to convince the highest rank of authority that this creature exists and could be the end of humanity if we don't stop trying to control nature, but nobody believed him. The only ones who somewhat believed him were the people on the boat who also witnessed the blinding light from above except for Ogata who thought he had gone insane from whatever happened down there.

The Oxygen Destroyer:

Daisuke knew no one was going to take action and planned for what he would believe to be inevitable. During his studies to find a weapon to fight this creature, he discovered a destructive chemical reaction that split oxygen atoms into fluids, forcibly removing all oxygen from a body of water and liquefying any organic material present. Even though he knew he had found the way to kill Gojira, he was satisfied as he horrified by the destructive potential of his "Oxygen Destroyer". He knew what he created might fall in the wrong hands but chose to continue researching it, letting go of his obsession with Gojira as he was confident that he could take it beyond its raw form and develop it to benefit society. Meanwhile, he kept its existence secret from everyone except for Emiko.

Hiroshima:

It's 1945, Daisuke has destroyed most of his research on the Oxygen Destroyer except for some crucial files and the weapon itself which are deeply hidden underground. The reason for this was because he was forced to leave his science career behind to fight in the war as a soldier. The only thing keeping him going is a small pocket watch he received as a wedding gift by Emiko, her father and Ogata. Even when he lost an eye during combat, he kept fighting for what he has dedicated his whole life to, making the world a better place. After reuniting with Emiko and Ogata on the 6th of August in a town close to Hiroshima, he learned the truth about their feelings for one another and to their surprise, he was very excepting as he knew all along. He knew from his experience and knowledge about the myths around Gojira that nature is in control of its inhabitants and not the other way around, including love. Then the sound of an alarm could be heard coming from Hiroshima, the bomb was coming. Daisuke told Emiko to get as far away from Hiroshima as they can whilst he was running towards making his way back towards his lab as fast as he could to make sure the last pieces of the Oxygen Destroyer were destroyed. Emiko knowing of the existence of the weapon and Daisuke's view of it, knew what he was going to and knew this was the last time she could tell him her biggest secret. She yelled his name and said: I am pregnant. Only a few moments away from detonation, Daisuke arrived at his lab and permanently destroyed as much as he could find, but it was too late. As the bomb dropped, he looked at his pocket watch and excepted his fate.

The future:

Many years later, Monarch was established in 1946 after the sinking of the U.S.S. Lawton and King of the Monsters was awoken. The attempt to kill Godzilla failed in 1954 and more Titan's were found around the world over the years. After having very little success in the search for ways to combat these creatures, in 1981 Monarch received a file containing information about Godzilla and some other artifacts that were found at Hiroshima whilst the city was being rebuilt. These files contained the bases of the Oxygen Destroyer and would later be used to remake the weapon, but the puzzle is incomplete. Therefore they search the closest to a relative there is, Ishiro Serizawa who gets hired at Monarch as one of their lead scientists.

The end

Is this a great story? no. Does it make a lot of sense? probably not. Does it have a lot of flaws and plotholes? very likely, but that is not the point of this topic. The point of this topic was to make a concept for a story that can make you think about the possibilities if it were to happen. Maybe this whole story could lead towards Destoroyah, maybe it's just a cool and interesting way to loosely adapt the 1954 story to the Monsterverse or maybe it just gives a bit more background and history to a character which wouldn't have seen a lot of otherwise. Do you think this concept has some potential? Do you have any other ideas on how the legacy of Dr. Serizawa could continue in any future movies? Please let me know in the comments and I will hopefully see you guys next time.

Long live the king...

@Kamoebas V.6

Thanks, I guess?

@A simple monster

Yeah basically, but the story of the 1954 movie had to be altered quite drastically to fit the Monsterverse, specifically time period as it is before the war instead of after and the fact that Godzilla never destroyed Tokyo in this version.

I think they could've said that Godzilla accidentally destroyed tokyo in a fight with another monster. Missed oppurtunity :(

It would be cool, but wouldn't that kind of mess up the current timeline? The existence of the Titans only got revealed in Godzilla 2014 so how would this have happened without Godzilla being revealed to the rest of the world?

I hope that this is cannon... but I have no way how they'd work that in to the actual cannon outside of some kind of comic.

If people weren't lazy, we wouldn't try to be efficient. If we weren't efficient, we'd never get anything done.

Very simple, Destoroyah.

Ones we get to let's say Godzilla 3 or another big phase ending movie, we could see Destoroyah become the big threat. As a part of his origins, we could dive into the history of the weapon that created it, the Oxygen Destroyer.

For us fans, the mention and use of the Oxygen Destroyer means a lot for the future of the Monsterverse, but for any newcomers to the franchise, this wouldn't think of it as something important to the franchise. That is why this could also serve as a callback to KotM and show how the military's actions had catastrophic consequences.

Long live the king...
