Denis Villeneuve has just received a nomination for a Bafta award for directing "Blade Runner: 2049" in this highly competitive season, while "Alien Covenant" was totally shut out. The other Ridley Scott directed film, "All the money in the world", also performed poorly, scoring a single nomination for the much publicized performance by veteran actor Christopher Plummer. "Blade Runner: 2049", recently blasted by Ridley Scott due to its long duration and slow pacing, scored a total of 8 nominations, including editing, production design, cinematography, music, makeup, special effects, sound and directing. When Denis Villeneuve’s name was listed among Best Director nominees this morning, there was cheering from the press corps at 195 Piccadilly in London. The original "Blade Runner" also nominated for 8 Baftas in 1983, notoriously snubbed Ridley Scott for directing it.

I don't mind BR49 winning an award for any category, except music (as that does not compare to Vangelis). .

Yeah, they also pour some love on that pile of cack Dunkirk. What a wretched, dull movie that was. The final confirmation that we all live in some kind of cracked virtual simulation will be if it wins any awards for its risible sound mix.

Well i think this is good news for BR2049 shows a movie can be good, despite not being a Box Office Hit, i think also its not quite the Long Run Time...  this does however restrict those who would see the movie but i think the movie mainly attracted those who were a Fan of the Original

I hope 2049 gets the cinematography and production design nods. It is such a dman beautiful film!! As for Covenant... I wish it received more love, but the only category it would have a chance in, at any awards show this year, would be effects or maaaaybe set design. I think Fassbender may have been on a few long lists of best actor though.

Blade Runner 2049 is a beautiful movie, Villeneuve is a fantastic director. We are happy that he will give us the new Dune movies.

But who thinks that an Alien movie needs a Bafta award? Nobody. The comparison is senseless.

And neither the movie Blade Runner 2049 nor Villeneuve's approach to it was blasted by Ridley Scott, you are lying again, joylift.

Ati You started this. You posted Ridley Scott's damaging, expletive-filled remarks about "Blade Runner" 2049". Like he can afford to criticize someone who chooses to be an artist instead of a business man (and not a very good one at that). Anyway, all his talking is starting to hurt his reputation; I hope he can get some public relations help. And by the way, your post about Ridley Scott's unfortunate statements did not belong in the Alien forum.

MemberNeomorphJan-09-2018 7:34 PM

red0guy I have to say that the soundtrack won me over even though I would have preferred a more experimental electronic artist to compose it. "Mesa" gave me goosebumps. You can also feel Vangelis' influece in Zimmer's score for "Dunkirk"

'You started this. You posted Ridley Scott's damaging, expletive-filled remarks about "Blade Runner" 2049".'

I did not and could not post 'damaging, expletive-filled remarks about Blade Runner 2049' because Ridley Scott did not make any damaging and expletive-filled remarks about the movie. Your misleading comment tries to make the readers believe this but the truth is that you are lying again.

'criticize someone who chooses to be...'

Ridley Scott did not criticize Villeneuve, that is claimed only by you. The truth is that Scott criticized himself, so you are lying again.

'your post about Ridley Scott's unfortunate statements did not belong in the Alien forum'

Next time you should read more carefully since the statements you call 'unfortunate' can be found in the comment section, not in the body of the article. In other words, you are trying to manipulate the reader, you are lying again.

To sum it up, your misleading actions can’t hide the fact that your comments are full of false statements.

Ati You know very well what your intentions were when you posted your article: you just made the unfounded claim that because Ridley Scott wanted to make another Blade Runner film, that meant it was "great news for the Alien universe". Really????? Come on... Totally unrelated topic intended to provoke the many people here who are more critical of Ridley Scott's actions and all over the place talking. There are so many objectionable points in those statements and many news outlets reacted in the same way. And just try to tell any Blade Runner fan that the original film was about 2 replicants having a baby: good luck with that...

Also, if would like to continue to to post unrelated topics, I recommend that you tell us the story about the time when Villeneuve had to kick out Ridley from the set.

Villeneuve "had to kick" Ridley Scott from the set because his presence was intimidating. Same like your posts against Ridley Scott,  although you said you are a fan.

"He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!"

daliens Yes, I am a big fan. And as a fan, I would have tried to just ignore those statements. But Ati decided to post them even though they don't have anything to do with Alien. I just had to comment on that. And the story about Villeneuve kicking Ridley Scott from the set tells a lot about Ridley's reasons to criticize the lenght of the movie and such: he wanted to have control. But he gave Villeneuve space, which is totally awesome, and it was the right choice: the movie is a critical darling, got 8 Baftas and most likely will get many Oscar nods. He should be campaigning for "Blade Runner: 2049": so it gets the additional box office push from the Awards season. Instead, he is bitching about how the movie is so f*cking long and so f*cking slow (his own words); and it is all right for him to say that because of course he wrote the script. Give me a break

Interesting. I have not seen BR2049 yet but am hearing it was panned for being long. I think both Prometheus and AC would have been better for being longer.

I love the fact that Ridley Scott would like to make a Blade Runner 2049 sequel in spite of the fact that it was a box office failure and it cost him 80 million dollars. It is obvious that Scott wants to work with Villeneuve again. We are happy that Scott wants to make a new Blade Runner movie – probably a space movie as it is suggested (by more characters) at the end of Blade Runner 2049. It is a good piece of news that Scott stands by Blade Runner 2049 because it means that the Alien Universe is important for him as well and wants to create the ultimate Alien prequel.

Apparently, you don’t see that these things are related – it’s because of the fact that your hatred against the Covenant’s makers controls your thoughts. Your narrow-minded comments prove this.

Provocation belongs in your pack of misleading actions used in your comments. Your actual idea used to provoke me is that my post is unrelated – simply because you claim it. A topic about a movie produced by Ridley Scott is unrelated! A topic about Blade Runner 2049 and the Alien Universe is unrelated!! You read your own comments?

But, of course, you do not have such posts here! You do not have unrelated posts about totally unrelated sci-fi movies such as the incredibly poor Beyond Skyline!

daliens – Thank you for the support, we need it. It is a sad fact that several Alien fans left the Covenant page because of joylitt’s offensive posts and comments. They have disappeared…

@joylitt @Ati -Guys, could you please stop fighting with each other? It derails from the thread. You two need to get over whatever problems you have with one other, seriously this isn't the first time you've gotten into a fight in the comments section.

@Ati Nothing was "Thrown out" of Alien Covenant, I simply put the Blade Runner post where it belonged, in the Blade Runner 2049 section.

MemberXenomorphJan-10-2018 1:12 PM

Ati you can count on my support.

I know joylitt has come to terms with Alien Covenant and is a Ridley Scott fan. I think he tries to keep this forum alive by being the devil's advocate. I hope I'm not wrong.

We're all getting anxious here because the news about the future of the Alien franchise is uncertain.

Ridley Scott can say anything about BR2049, he has every right as a producer at least. He doesn't care much for the awards. Who the f*ck cares?

If RS said BR2049 is too f*cking long and too f*cking slow Villeneuve should take note. And he will do. Hope he will have a take at an alien movie one day. He's f*cking good.

red0guy and joylitt, I liked the soundtrack for "BR2049' and the length of the movie was not an issue for me at all.  And I agree with dk that I think 'Prometheus' could have been longer.  Just add in all those cut scenes to start... however, even with the cut scenes added, the character development still needed more help.

I can't wait (and my wife is really excited to as she did not go to the theater with me to see it) until I get the blu-ray next week.

Svanya

AdminPraetorianJan-10-2018 1:20 PM

@Membrane I really liked the soundtrack as well, I thought it was original and did homage to Vangelis. This is coming from someone who begged her parents to buy her the original soundtrack and was disappointed when it was that shitty version from New American Orchestra. I was overjoyed when I could finally get the real soundtrack in '94.

'Sea Wall' is my fave track from the movie, at around 2 minutes in it breaks into the most beautiful homage to Vangelis's 'Main Title'.

MemberTrilobiteJan-10-2018 1:30 PM

Sorry to veer OT but it has been a long time since seeing BR. Is 2049 a movie that can be watched having forgotten a lot of the original or should that DVD be dusted off and viewed again?

Svanya

AdminPraetorianJan-10-2018 1:35 PM

@dk I think so, as long as you remember the main plot and characters you should be fine.

Membrane

MemberFacehuggerJan-10-2018 1:50 PM

Svanya, "Sea Wall" was also my favorite.  I play it loudly at home. :-)  When that scene hit and the music came in, it shook the theater (I saw it in IMAX) and really brought the intensity to it!

Ati

MemberPraetorianJan-10-2018 1:57 PM

dk - I think it's a good idea to rewatch the first Blade Runner before enjoying Blade Runner 2049.

Ati

MemberPraetorianJan-10-2018 2:06 PM

Svanya -  'I simply put the Blade Runner post where it belonged...'

That's OK, thank you, I made that comment because the two topics created by red0guy, 'Blade Runner 2049 opens in China and Japan' http://www.alien-covenant.com/topic/46923 and 'Might All the Money in the world flop because of the Spacey scandal?' http://www.alien-covenant.com/topic/46972 were not put in the sections they belonged.

I would do agree with you that the thread 'Might All the Money in the world flop because of the Spacey scandal? is a fairly weak player in the Covenant section.

joylitt

MemberNeomorphJan-10-2018 2:09 PM

dk I have watched Blade Runner hundreds of times. However, as a personal choice I decided not to rewatch it before going to see BR2049. I always thought that making a sequel to the first movie was like making "Citizen Kane 2". However, Villeneuve's film is a pleasurable enough experience by itself.

Ati

MemberPraetorianJan-10-2018 2:11 PM

daliens - Thank you very much.

'We're all getting anxious here because the news about the future of the Alien franchise is uncertain.'

Comments and posts bashing Scott and Covenant made by posters like joylitt has caused the uncertain future of the Alien franchise we are facing now. That is the sad truth. :/

joylitt

MemberNeomorphJan-10-2018 2:17 PM

Ati That last post does not belong in the Alien forum. It belongs in the "Demonizing joylitt" or in "joylitt the almighty" forums. ;-)

Svanya

AdminPraetorianJan-10-2018 2:18 PM

@Ati Thanks for pointing that thread out to me, i've moved it. Guys if you see posts here that are not about Alien movies please PM me. We miss some now and then.

dk

MemberTrilobiteJan-10-2018 3:51 PM

joylitt I think I will hold off and watch the movie fresh as many movie goers probably did- maybe with no or very few preconceived notions. It might be interesting to see if it can be enjoyed as a stand alone movie.

Ati

MemberPraetorianJan-10-2018 4:02 PM

Svanya - You're welcome.

Can I enjoy the advantages of the category 'Missed Now and Then'? /Just kiddin'/
