According to a previous topic, ’Alien Covenant (is) in the Hot Seat’ suggesting that Fox is facing financial problems due to the movie’s box office. So let’s try to find the balance again!

Original titles and lines from the articles in question:

’Fox Earnings Beat Expectations Despite $22-Million Loss in Film and Tv Division’

’The media conglomerate reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings that exceeded expectations while recording a loss at its filmed entertainment division due in part to lower revenue at its storied movie studio.’

’Fox is still awaiting British approval for its $14-billion bid to take control of Europe’s largest pay-TV company, Sky.’

‘21st Century Fox Earnings Beat Expectations, Revenues Miss’

’The company said its gains were attributable to profits in its cable operations, which helped offset weaker results in its film and broadcast television arms.’

’The emergence of digital MVPD services from Hulu, YouTube, and DirecTV Now, along with other skinny bundle services, has added 2 million-plus subscribers to 21st Century Fox’s cable networks.’

Let’s face the fake news agencies together! :)

It seems the spirit of the thread is to examine how information can be used to sway one's opinion. That said, we can look at everything out there and form our own opinions.

I promise to contribute to the current quarter earnings with an Alien: Covenant Blue-Ray purchase.

I bought both novelizations and will eventually buy into VR so I can watch the Alien: Covenant and subsequent releases.

I don't fell like I will be the only one doing this. I believe the VR experience will be amazing regardless of expectations and this will only drive interest into Blue-Ray sales and the eventual followup cinema releases.

My biggest problem with all the negative articles about Alien Covenant, is the way in which it is being portrayed as a John Carter. The word ‘scapegoat’ comes to mind, along with severe misdirection that is being used to provide ammunition to ill informed critics who take the approach of removing a mole hill with an atom bomb, and then start making mountains out of mole hills, in that order.

Critics, imo have been slating just about most films being released this year regardless of the quality. Fortunately, we can all treat critical reviews with the same level of seriousness as taking hair care product advice from Elmer Fudd. AC had a decent budget, but nothing out of spec for a film like AC. As soon as the box office numbers came in, it appeared to be open season on AC regardless of its performance.

2016 was one of the worst years ever on record for box office takings, so it should come as no big surprise that 2017 was not expected to reach any dizzy heights in bringing in revenue. I bet if the critics could find a way to blame AC for falling revenue in 2016 they would.

I see that John Denver did not sell as much vinyl as he used to, so can we blame that on AC as well? The problem these days is that box office takings are not as representative of a movies success as they used to be. Technology is changing and so are peoples viewing habits.

The misdirection that is being perpetrated, is down to the art of creating a specifically targeted headline from a relatively general, non-specific one. Fox needs to review its budget for all films, turns into Fox needs to review AC’s budget. Fox needs to think about the future of its franchises, becomes Fox needs to think about the future of Alien franchise.

There is one small point that I do think is a concern. How much money does it take to make a decent Alien franchise movie ?

Is there a site to track how many preorders of a movie exist?

It really is hilarious that people keep calling a movie with a 71% critical positive review conglomerate "a failure". So far, it is within the top 25 of all grossing movies for 2017

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2017

, and that shall surely increase as the Asian market's numbers come into play (why this staggered release is done I'll never understand, but it is what it is). So, to call a "top 25" movie a "failure" and to say the movie house is "on the hot seat" is a bit of a stretch.

Starlogger Thanks for posting that list- very interesting. It makes less sense to go after AC from a FOX bean counter perspective when they had these treasures behind AC:

76

A Cure for Wellness

Fox

56

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul

Fox

30

Snatched

Fingers crossed for a Good Home Video Return..

I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion but i can understand ATI's frustration as the other Topic could come across as FOX are in a bit of Trouble and its all thanks to Alien Covenant.

Look Alien Covenant has been a disappointment, this is FACT

Financially the movie has not hit the Mark expected by FOX  Not considering Marketing and Promotion Costs.

But its a Far Cry from being a FLOP.. and it by no means, puts FOX Financially in a difficult position.

Alien Covenant has still made a Profit and while FOX may have expected more of a % Return.. it has made Money and we have yet to see Japan Release (which should have happened within 4 weeks after USA) and we have Blu-Ray and DVD Revenue to come.

BigDave I figure there must be many pre orders but I do not know if it is possible to track. I know the DVD release got bumped and wonder if was at least partially due to not enough product to meet pre order demand?

There is also the case of licensed merchandise that I spent an embarrassing amount of money on.

@ Big Dave

“Fingers crossed for a Good Home Video Return..”

Personally, this is where I think the big money is now.  I just hope I’m right on this one. I think too much focus has been spent on looking just at box office returns as a performance marker. I think that until the home video return comes in, any comments on AC’s success or failure have been premature. If I’m right about the home video returns being good, then I would say AC has actually been a success.

As you say, fingers crossed.

Batchpool How much money does it take to make a decent Alien franchise movie ?

Takes money to make money? I'd imagine 150 million to 200 million. If it wasn't that much ALL studios would spend 40-50 million on their superhero/action flicks.

Covenant 2: If the sets are still built(not destroyed!)they should save some cash?

How about an Alien convention called: Xeno Feast?

See you @ XENO FEAST 2017!

The problem these days is that box office takings are not as representative of a movies success as they used to be. Technology is changing and so are peoples viewing habits.

Thank you! It seems so obvious doesn't it?! why do critics always rip on about box office hits only, and not the rest of the sales from merch/streaming/dvd sales etc.

The cinema is no longer the primary means for viewing a movie. Many viewers opt to wait and watch a film on dvd/streaming these days.
