With the excuse of covering the release of an "Honest trailer" on youtube (number #1 trending video with almost 1 million views in just 13 hours), several entertainment news outlets' collaborators vented their frustration with "Alien Covenant". It is true that most of the Honest trailers reviews are not to be taken very seriously. However, this time around, these guys go as far as to describe the movie as "Bad", while calling the second act a "wank job".

Echoing these negative comments, The Hollywood Reporter, The Playlist and Dark Horizons, among others, had some harsh things to say about Covenant as well, even though their original reviews were not that bad. The Playlist, which originally gave the film a B+, wrote: "As the summer is winding down, you might’ve forgotten that “Alien: Covenant” was a thing we all endured (...) there’s all big (empty) ideas that get batted around, yet another crew of idiotic scienticians, extended jam sessions on the flute, and the realization you’re watching a B-grade horror script, masquerading as an “Alien” movie, directed by someone who should know better. We’re not keen on kicking movies when they’re down, but “Alien: Covenant” makes it too easy."

Dark Horizons, on the other hand wrote: "Combining some of the loftier sci-fi philosophy of “Prometheus” with the more slasher trope formula of the original “Alien” films, the film doesn’t quite work as either. Yet it boasts some glorious style and interesting exploration of larger  themes even amidst some idiotic character decisions and muddled storytelling. With a production budget of $97 million, the film ultimately grossed $233 million worldwide – a disappointing result that suggests the franchise is done for a few years until someone reboots it again."

I could agree on some levels, but this looks deliberately snarky to me- deservingly on some points. I think the same treatment could be given to any Alien movie though- haters will find a way to hate. That goes for any entertainment be it movie.TV, music or literature.

Wow and to think they are making good money out of bashing Alien Covenant. What a way to make a living!

If they make an honest buck, more power to them. It was well don for sure, but maybe that is the real point- cashing in on hate. Wouldn't be the first time. I heard them out, agreed with some points and not others. No big deal.

Now seriously. I know, that's what Honest trailers are, no need to be sore. Are they really that popular? They got to #1 on youtube trending videos in a blink of an eye. They are #2 right now.

Their popularity is not in question. There is no soreness felt. It is all subjective at the end of the day- polls and upvotes can be treated as statistics because they can be measured but those are subjective too really. It's all good.

Some movies suffer unjustly from snowballing negativity, and I think Covenant finds itself in that category; a movie that does middling box-office, gets mixed but quite a few good reviews, but then takes on the reputation as 'bad movie' probably because en masse we look for black and white certainty, not complexity and subtler shades.

Covenant has a lot in it that irritates, sure, and it is a strange mash-up of thoughtful Prometheus and slasher alien action, but like dk says, you could level a lot of the same criticisms at all the Alien movies, if you want to pull them apart. Or you could pull apart any movie. Citizen Kane's about a dead newspaper owner: boring. But if it gains that golden sheen of 'classic' or even 'everyone said it was good', then it becomes untouchable, and snowballs in the other direction.

I like A:C, despite its weird pacing, awkward compromises, and rather overstuffed narrative. Ridley's gives us a visual feast, yet again, and enough atmosphere for me to watch it over and over on blu-ray.

We should perhaps face the virtually inevitable fact that we won't get another Alien as good as 1979's Alien. Bottled lightning and all that. Let's enjoy what we do get, especially when Scott is still interested enough to add to his Ridley-verse. And sad as it is that these guys get kicks and money from pulling things apart, let's keep adding our positive voices to the party. . . .

Such stupidity.

Were raising a generation of complainers. Nothing will ever be good enough. Don't you dare do something uneven cause we'll prove how stupid we both are with a youtube video!

I suggest they move out of their parents basement and write their own awesome(cause I'm 100% sure it will be!)movie! LOL!  It doesn't even have to be a movie...Do your own book series, comic....Can't for the life of me fathom such ineptitude. This is the best thing they can come up with their short young lives?

I suppose they make money....and snarky negativity sells and they DON'T Want to get a real job....So yeah I can see this.

They make their money and have their fun which is fine. The problem lies when people believe it and make up a judgement before a viewing.

I could rip every film i ever seen in some way or another. A:C had its flaws but as a standalone film vs any of the summers action flicks it stands up pretty good.

So casual fans would enjoy it IMO it no worse than any of the crap out right now. YT never should of paid these idiots (none of them) then see how much they dislike something when they not getting paid. silence

Take This.... This is the blood of our lord

I've seen the HT for AC and everything they said can be debunked pretty easily. It's too bad the general public can't appreciate it more...But make up your own mind, there are too many sheeple in this world already. ALIEN also had very negative reviews at first and I believe the same goes for Covenant.

But they were kind of right though, even if they are a bit childish in the way they review stuff. Ultimately I did find AC pretty underwhelming..

Not me. It was a good movie. Not a great movie, but a good gothic horror film. This video just seems like another media outlet jumping on the bash Covenant bandwagon to get hits.

That narrative does not jive with the fact that the majority of the public and majority of reviewers liked the movie.

I'm expecting the "Everything Wrong With Covenant in 15 Minutes or Less" video from Cinema Sins next.

Kethol I agree. It has some flaws (what movie doesn't), but otherwise was an enjoyable addition to the franchise.

I couldn't help feeling I'd seen most of the ideas before - crew awoken early, course re-directed, touch down on an alien world, find an a crashed alien ship, crew members infected, infection 'gets out' back at the ship, the android's a bad dude, blow the alien out of the airlock - but when I saw Alien I was, like, blown away cos I'd never seen anything else like it. I was gutted as I'd really wanted to enjoy this film! But I ended up feeling a bit let down overall. I did love some of the visual effects though, and I loved the alien embryos at the end :-)

Some of the visual touches were astounding - like seeing the atmospheric storms from orbit - amazing. And the stuff they patched up wounds with..

Ultimately I didn't think it was a mind-blowing film though.. a bit of franchise fatigue perhaps?
