Was Space Jockey face hugged?

Despite it appearing to have its chest burst, was it really face hugged, since wasn't its elephantine mask in place in the pilot chair in the Derelict when the Nostromo crew discovered it?

Yet if it was chestburst, this would suggest it was face hugged during flight and then crashed on LV-426!?

Strange situation.

If the Engineers/SJ know what this eggs are capable of, i wonder why they are so stupid and get impregnated.

It's like they never seen that facehuggers before, which may be true.

One thing's for sure:  time it takes to burst out (or POP!) is variable.  Took forever for bursting from the Predator in AvP and from Ripley in Alien3 - yet seemingly quick from Oram...

So entirely possible that the SJ was impregnated before he put the elephant man mask on.

It had to have been facehugged elsewhere, before the ship took off. It all seems deliberate on the part of whoever the pilot was, human, Engineer or otherwise (my money is on the pilot really being a human). The fact that it crashed on a remote, barren planetoid with an activated warning beacon suggests that it was a sacrificial act.

He could have been infected any number of ways, now that it has been established there are a variety of ways and a variety of different types of animals can be engineered to deliver the pathogen. Motes for example, as in Covenant.

The thing is, the whole situation has never had a real 100% explanation that has stuck, its evolved a little...  the inception from Alien was the idea that a Face Hugger from one of the Eggs had got to the Space Jockey, and we then was left with the Question of how did the Space Jockey get infected, while he had the Helmet on...   now its a easy Question for those who believed this was a Skeleton/Exo-skeleton of a Alien Race.

Which means they are pretty foolish, especially if they know what the Xenomorph and Eggs was... We need to remember at the time of Alien we have to wonder what connection was established...  the movie is based off Star-Beast and the Giant Derelict Pilot in that Draft was just as unsuspecting as Kane was in Alien.

This evolved to the Space Jockey Race indeed being connected to the Eggs, as a Bio-Weapon which raises how he would be infected... if this was not a Space Suit then a likely explanation is something escaped from the Cargo Hold.

If its a Space suit which it is... then again this could apply but would a Space Jockey not have his Suit on all the time?

So we come to the conclusion did he investigate his Cargo and got infected, was the Space Suit Mask only Worn when Piloting the Ship... so we have a Scene like in Prometheus when the Engineer got into the Pilot Chair.. and so the Space Jockey investigated something but then got infected while his mask was off.   Then awoken and knew what had happened and then knew it was a matter of time and Quarantined the Cargo?

PROMETHEUS.... offered a lot of Clues... we had the Engineers working on a Bio-logical Weapon that passed on Xenomorph Traits to infected Hosts.. in many ways.

Those Engineers died due to a Outbreak, 2000 years ago.. we need maybe ignore then relevance of the date to Jesus and just aknowledge this was a event thousands of years ago

The Surviving Engineer was fine.. he had gone off to Cryo-sleep and was not infected... however the other 3 Engineers on the same Ship was not so Lucky and they had Chest Busted Holes, that was Too Small to allow for the Deacon Chest Buster. Well Deacon born from a Human/Xeno DNA Face Hugger AKA the Trilobite

So this for me was the biggest clue, that what ever caused those Engineers Chest Busters also caused the Space Jockey.

My pick... likely the Hammerpedes... or the Substance in the Top of the ampoules assuming its alone causes a different reaction that leads to Worm-like Organisms that can then Gestate inside to become a Chest Buster.

But Holloway was not growing none of these, and Shaws Trilobite had a Umbilical Cord so those Engineers would need a Womb... most likely Eggs that are infected...

So again i think Hammerpede was my most likely candidate, or they had became infected with a Face Hugger that Evolved from the result of the Black Goo and latter infected some of the Engineers.

But now with AC... it opens up a different explanation... its now likely the Space Jockey will be infected with Davids Experiments, this would lead us to Question how foolish this must be...  if they have any idea of what the Black Does and LV-223.

But again the Spores or another more inventive way of implanting a Embryo could explain it.... this would fit better if the Space Jockey was a Human/Synthetic though but by Synthetic a Synthetic Construct.

But with one comment from RS.. it could indeed still be that a Engineer or Elder becomes infected with one of Davids experiments.

I will however now pass the clues RS had confirmed to what happened to the Space Jockey as of prior to AC Plot...

RS had confirmed....

*The Space Jockey Engineer had got infected with his own Cargo...  going further to suggest something Evolved in the Cargo Hold and it got to the Space Jockey.

*The Space Jockey knowing he was infected then set a Course to Quarantine the Cargo,  his original destination was unknown but he did not get far once he was Face Hugged.

*The Space Jockey event had happened within a few hundred years of the LV-223 Outbreak that killed off all those Engineers.

Thus the event was connected to LV-223, it happened either a few hundred years prior to the Outbreak.. which could mean the Black Goo came from the Derelicts Eggs...  or a few hundred years after in which case the Eggs came from something connected to the Black Goo on LV-223

I think the latter was more true... as the Space Jockey could have gone into Cryo-sleep like the Prometheus Engineer, he however awoken a few hundred years after the Outbreak and then realized shortly after he was infected.  The Last Engineer in Prometheus was lucky he was either not infected or his infection had not take hold at the time he was awoken... his 3 Brothers however where infected and attempted to stop it by going into Cryo-sleep or they was unaware but then they got Chest Busted while in Cryo-sleep.

But these events are no longer Canon to the Space Jockey as it is all but confirmed unless RS does a U-Turn that the Eggs are Davids Creation....  This does not mean that the Space Jockey is not a Engineer though.

There are a million ways this guys background story can be written. He could have even infected himself on purpose.

@BigDave: While we know from the hologram recording David played back in Prometheus that the Juggernaut cockpit included three more Engineers, their cryo-sleep capsules had not been melted through (or broken out of) so if they had died in these where is evidence that it was due to infection?

I had never really thought about it. perhaps it was a bit like the opening scene in prometheous were the engineer drinks the black goo and then dissolves exept maybe he did it in a controled way so that it would take over him slowly. or it could be one of the airborn spores fron AC. Or maybe david implanted it within him surgically somehow.

A: Where they found the Alive Last Engineer No Holes

B: The other three Cryo-Pods with Holes in.

C: Location of all four Engineers

Next a close up of the Production Team preparing the Set.

Where we can clearly see the Holes in the Glass are Outwards.

Maybe the early evolution of the xenomorph lifecycle was much faster like we've seen in A: Covenant. So the Space Jockey could be infected just hours before he even entered the ship. Or he didn't even know about it? He could be infected in a completely different way than we've seen before.

... I wonder what happened to the alien that bursted out of the Space Jockey! Did it lay the eggs?

In one of the old interviews Ridley said the alien has a very limited lifespan to reproduce. Something like four days, then it dies. That would be the original life cycle reproduction he was talking about, where it cocoons another host body which then transforms into an egg.

@BigDave: Legend:) It leaves the question now as to why didn't we see any residual cocooned areas in the ship (e.g. outside the cockpit)?

Slightly OT, and I know it wasn't explained since it was just a deleted, but was there any theory on how the egg-morphing might work?  As in how the egg is created or how the human becomes or provides nutrients for the resulting facehugger?  The facehugger really resembles a pelvic bone with eight bony fingers, and a vertebrae with a point at the end. Might the facehugger be the result of what a human body morphs into after melting (or whatever happens) into an egg?  Then the part of the facehugger that implants the embryo into a person's mouth would be where human reproductive organs normally are on a pelvis.

From what it looked like in Giger's art and the egg-morph scene in Alien, the cocooned body was being broken down and used as raw material for the egg that is growing around it. I'm sure the human DNA is being re-written - since that has been established as how the pathogen operates - and that could be used to explain the familiar looking parts of the face hugger.

Going back to an old Omni interview, Ridley said this:

"What gave us the cocoon concept was that insects will utilize other's bodies to be hosts of their eggs. That's how the alien would use Dallas and each of the crew members it kills. This explains why the alien kills them one by one. It wants to use each person as a separate host each time it has new eggs…The biological make up of humans was useful for the alien eggs to feed on…"

I was thinking the SJ was face hugged and woke up later not knowing what happened- sort of like what happened in AVP.

Ultimately, it likely wasn't thought through back when the movie was made and they had no idea it would become what it is now.

@Kethol: So Ridley considers the life cycle akin to that of the polydnavirus?

Kethol

MemberChestbursterJun-24-2017 8:33 PM

Not so much Ridley, as the man who wrote Alien - Dan O'bannon. He talked about those parasitic wasps way back in 1979 interviews, and on the DVD/Blu Rays. I assume he understood the wasp/virus relationship.

It's nothing new. That parasitic infection idea has been in dozens of sci-fi stories long before Alien. As I recall, the Alien production was even sued by a writer who wrote a story back in the 1930s or '40s about an alien depositing parasitic eggs in peoples stomachs.

Everything the alien does exists in nature, even stealing the DNA of the host.

Kethol Interesting. I imagine your time line might include Who Goes There (short story I think)  that became The Thing....

Kethol

MemberChestbursterJun-24-2017 10:53 PM

Oh, there's lots of them pre Alien - Campbell's Who Goes There?, Robert Silverberg's Symbiont, Heinlein's The Puppet Masters, A.E. Van Vogt's Voyage of the Space Beagle, Jack Finneys The Body Snatchers. Octavia Butler's Clay Ark is another good one, although that may have been a few years after Alien.

I love The Thing ('82). I saw that movie new at the theater when I was 5, my mom had no idea how intense a movie it was going to be. I was absolutely terrified, but I've always loved it.

auximenes I saw it in the theatre as a youngin! I couldn't watch the dog scene and my older brother teased me afterward saying that I didn't see The Thing- I saw The Palm (of my hand when it got scary) lol! I can't get enough of that 82 version now though!
