Peter Weyland as Played By Guy Pearce Seems a Bit Weak to Me.

For somebody that could start and run a such a large company and even spearhead a 1 trillion dollar space mission, he seems like a bit of a fizzle.  I'm not sure that Pearce was/is the right actor for the role.

Originally, Sir Ridley preferred Rutger Hauer or Max Von Sydow for the role.  I think that these men have an intensity and presence that Pearce cannot exude.

Who else might have fit the bill?

Aidan Gillen (aka petyr baelish) for a bit of sneering, affluent charm.

Imagine the smugness exuded between Gillen and Fassbender lol

You are right though, Guy Pearce had nothing going for that role.

Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland works very well.

I don't think he is weak. I do think he was over the top in Covenant though. But, with the type of material he was working with it is not strange that he played his part with a little bit too much of that tongue in cheek verve.

I think it's a character still unexploded by the franchise, they are blind in David and do not see beyond him.

But for David to turn out the way he did and hate on mankind he needed a really arrogant, condescending, smug SOB to be his master/father. Pearce just seemed bored.

One thing I noticed re-watching Prometheus recently was how much Holloway was getting under David's skin with his indifferent, dismissive attitude towards him.

David is a "Replicant" then he fits more in BR than AC in my opinion. He has taken the leading role of the beast, and I think I know why this film has been a failure.

Honestly it looks to me that this movie tried to be a quick cash grab operation. It was not planned or thought out as thoroughly as Prometheus was. They tried to make some cheap movie full of tropes, and they doubled down on Fassbender because he was one of the few highlights in Prometheus, providing the movie with some artistic credibility. The plan backfired badly though, because the audience did to take the bait; once the truth about that stupid "twist" was out the film was dead in the water.

On AC The Beast is in the background, this is not a director failure, I want to clarify it, but in fact very bad planned from FOX, he brought out an irrelevant story because is a master in the artistic, I have already seen it almost three times for the visual beauty of the film.

Roger55 However I am sure that if we could have a 30 year old Ridley Scott sit through this movie he would be dismayed even at the visual aspects of the film.

The morale in this thread is pretty low.

On a cheerier note - Wes Anderson will be directing Fantastic Mr. Xenomorph.

I think Guy Pearce was good in AC, you can really see is contempt in David living forever and him not, he seemed very bitter. Personally really like it. The start set up the Prometheus tone but then totally tailed off. David saying Creator was very robotic and a tadge over the top but I suppose he had just been made.

I thought Guy Pearce was perfect for Weyland. I wish the opening showing the younger Weyland had been in Prometheus though. That would have made a more complete picture of how his character had changed over time, for the worse.

I think Guy Pearce worked really well....

He played the upper class English man with a Ego quite well, I think Anthony Hopkins would have played a Good Weyland but then you would come a bit unstuck for the younger scenes. Its easier when done right to make a Younger Person look 20-30 years older than a older person 20-30 years younger.

Guy Pearce is an EXCELLEnt choice. Sure as hell beats Lance Henrickson (yawn). The only mistake they made was the TERRIBLE script/dialogue they gave him in Prometheus, and the even more HORRENDOUS "makeup"(? is that what that crap was?) they used in Prometheus.

@joylitt Can't say I disagree with you about the "cash grab" attempt. Hopefully, Fox's meddling will stop and let RS make a masterpiece this next go round. (And there WILL be at least one more, make no mistake).

@IRaptus - "Aidan Gillen (aka petyr baelish) for a bit of sneering, affluent charm."

Great suggestion... he plays a man with cunning / arrogance very well indeed..!

Weyland never was very interesting in Prometheus, I didn’t care for that character. Unfortunately, he was very weak written as with other characters. The script was probably a bigger problem compared to his skill. One thing that could have improved his character in Prometheus is if they would have kept some of the TED talk in it because it explained his character a lot better.

I haven’t seen Pearce in many roles so I can not comment on his acting ability. Maybe I shall try to watch some of the movies that he is in to see more about that.

Weyland could return in some way, I wouldn’t mind it if they make the character more interesting and makes sense of him. If they plan to portray in the way they have done this far they might as well never feature Weyland again.
