MemberNeomorphJun-13-2017 9:44 AMI'm not sure what all the technical words about this mean in English since it isn't the language that I normally speak. My question is if Alien Covenant has made a profit, if people have paid to see it in the movie theaters so they will make a profit compared to how much it cost to make.

MemberOvomorphJun-13-2017 9:54 AMThoughts_Dreams: Unless I am mistaken, after marketing and promoting the film is taken into account - as this can cost a lot to promote, plus actors and director, etc. flying around for interviews (planes, insurance, etc.) and other things that eat into revenue; all can reduce profit. This seems to be why studios need more back than double what it cost a film.

MemberNeomorphJun-13-2017 1:48 PMThanks for the reply. Is there anyone else that has got something to say? Big Dave?

MemberPraetorianJun-13-2017 2:50 PMThoughts_Dreams - The movie opens in China this Friday. Let's wait until Monday, then we will try to answer your question. :)

MemberDeaconJun-13-2017 6:10 PMTechnically as Movies are ran as business ventures, they usually class breaking even as making double what the total out lay had been.
Alien Covenant's Budget was about $100M Advertising, Viral Marketing etc etc, would add to this and who knows how much was spent.. i am going to say Marketing and other costs are likely to had been about $30-50M
So the movie would need to make i would say at very least to break even $250-300M mark

MemberDeaconJun-13-2017 6:12 PMSo all in all, minus Marketing etc i think the movie will struggle to break even, but may do... but when we take into account Marketing etc... i cant see it breaking even.
And i think even making any Major $50M+ Profit could be hard

MemberChestbursterJun-14-2017 5:35 AMThey are still in the theatrical run and have not even gotten into the other revenue streams. It will have no problem breaking even and turning a profit.

AdminTrilobiteJun-14-2017 10:55 AMIt needs to break even before it makes profit. So far it has not even broken even yet.
As I've said multiple times before, it is a rule of thumb to multiply a movie's production budget by 2 or 2.5 in order to get what the movie needs to make to break even.
For Alien: Covenant the break even point is somewhere between $194-242 million. It's always safer to assume the latter. So until the movie makes $242.5 million worldwide (at most), we can assume it's made no profit.
The movie currently sits at $181 million worldwide--It has a little ways to go.

AdminEngineerJun-14-2017 11:34 AMGMan is right, Covenant needs to earn a bit more to turn a solid profit. I went and saw it 4 times in theaters (paid for) and I plan to go at least one more time. Despite my gripes, I want to support the franchise and do my part to solidify a sequel.

MemberChestbursterJul-01-2017 7:33 AMIn other words it's not doing very well obviously. By the end of it's theatrical run it won't have made much profit, put out a better product and it would have made alot more money. Prometheus made way more than this mess.

I think that it's fair to say that it could have done better money-wise but still it seems to me that it's not a disaster. Hopefully they'll get some more money when they release it on DVD and Blu-ray, that's my opinion even though I understand that you have a different view on AC compared to me.

MemberFacehuggerJul-03-2017 9:08 AMWell, if we do get a sequel it will probably be more about the Engineers, more like a "Prometheus 2" of sorts, I think. Scott will probably note how Prometheus made more than Covenant

Maybe, we'll see. What I'm afraid of is that it will focus too much on the Engineers and ignore the Xenos/monsters.
In order for a Engineer movie they need to focus on the human characters and make the Engineers interesting. They should make the Engineers closer to the Xenomorph, make them the creators of it or to make them the creators of something that the Xenos come from.
The connections should make sense while not being too obvious and make the human characters better.
