‘Alien: Covenant’: Damon Lindelof Teases Where Franchise Could Go Next

Whether or not Ridley Scott gets to finish his “Alien” prequel journey remains to be seen, but the film’s tepid box office performance (it looks unlikely to hit $100 million domestic) probably isn’t making 20th Century Fox eager to greenlight anything soon. Nonetheless, this is a story that still needs to be wrapped up, and Damon Lindelof teases where the next installment might go.

As you’ll recall, Lindelof worked on “Prometheus,” but didn’t return for ‘Covenant,’ but he’s had more than enough conversations with Scott about what he wanted to do with the “Alien” series, that he’s well informed of the director’s intentions. And according to Lindelof, the journey of the characters in the prequels to find their makers isn’t over.

“…we weren’t necessarily talking about what the sequel to ‘Prometheus’ would be as opposed to like where this journey was going to end up, and I think that the themes that Ridley was really interested in overlapped with themes that I was interested in, which is things that he had already explored in ‘Blade Runner.’ He had always explained ‘Prometheus’ to me as the marriage between ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner’ because he was interested in this idea of creation and that there were three generations of creation,” he told Collider. “You have man and his creation, which are the synthetic beings, the androids, the robots, replicants, whatever you wanna call them depending on which Ridley movie you’re in. And then what’s the next level of that, which is who created man? So that search for God as it were to go and ask, ‘Why did you make me and to what end?’ was something that Ridley was interested in and was in Jon Spaihts’ draft long before I came along, and so that was the thing that I keyed into.”

Those themes are still present, but there’s still one more step for the story to take, and it’s one we didn’t see in ‘Covenant.’

“I think that one of the conversations that we had at the end of ‘Prometheus’ is, Shaw and David have basically locked in on the coordinates of the planet where the Engineers came from. What does that place look like? Ridley called it Paradise. What happens when they land on that planet? It doesn’t feel like they’ve gotten there yet in ‘Covenant.’ ‘Covenant’ felt like it maybe was a detour prior to them arriving at the place of origin so I don’t want to spoil any place that he might still be wanting to go, but the conversations that he and I had about where the story goes next were largely about the place where the Engineers were from and less the events of ‘Covenant, ‘ ” Lindelof explained.

All fascinating stuff on paper, but as we learned with ‘Covenant,’ when paired with schlocky, poorly conceived horror tropes and terrible characterizations, the results are not so compelling. Thoughts?

I somehow hope that we will still see the dark gigeresque landscapes we hoped to see in Alien Covenant...

...just imagine this landscape as a battleground... the final film should have a scale and action like lord of the rings, design like the real world in Matrix, action like we've seen it in Mad Max Fury Road ... and Shaw...

Let's just hope it is a real war of the worlds kind of thing...

That Giger-esque world seems expensive however cool it would be. Although a lot of Covvy was CG, the real Paradise/Origin could be really neat. I'm just apprehensive that a rock solid script could actually get done now a days and directed that ACTUALLY works for a 2 hour movie. 2.5hrs would be great but it just seem like that is ev3r gonna happen. The news of the new novel just seems they are buying time and selling fluff/filler until something better comes along. Is what it is, bummer. Ridley did say he wanted a "War of the World's" but which installment of the many he wanted is that?

That sounds really cool. I wonder what role Origae-6 could play in this. Will it be a breeding ground for David's creations?

Will we see a full scale xeno invasion of the engineer homeworld?

Lindelloff....

I could borrow a friend's Pitbull babypuppy, let her chew on my keyboard for a day and she'd write better stuff than Lindelloff.

Bdub,

I liked Lost for the first 2 seasons until they started delving into time travel, and weird shit like that to find out it was all just a brief experience before going to heaven

Exactly.

Lindelloff is strong starter, but has no legs for long-distance working. He falls back on tropes, cliches` and ripping off the infamous DALLAS 'It was all just a dream' type stuff.

In short, from all I've seen of his work, most of it shows he's lazy, uncreative and largely capable of only working off cliche` and trope-ishness.

He has an absolutely undeservedly high opinion of himself and he gets work mainly from the sound of his last name which 'sticks' in people's minds.

Blackwinter-witch, I heard Leftovers was pretty good compared to his other stuff

@Blackwinter stole my thunder. Lindlehof is a hack.  I remember reading that he convinced Ridley to deviate from Jon Spaits script and to go a different route.

I just wanted an action yarn with the new Alien films.  Different venues, different situations or some new type of Alien that was an initial threat and killed people which lead to the current Xenomorph. The series could have went to a great direction but Ridley blew it.  I will always think that Prometheus and Covenant sucks.  I actually enjoyed Requiem much better than those movies.

I don't disagree that Lindehof is a hack, but IIRC a lot of the hack elements were already present in Jon Spaihts original script.

Even a broke clock is right 2x a day, but Lindelloff is just desperate to keep his career alive...he was approached to do Covenant, said 'no', and then discovered NO one else wants his works, SO, he's trying to keep himself relevant by trying to attach himself to the ALIEN franchise.

all I want is for FOX to hire a scriptwriter based on Merit, not name. Give R. Scott even a half decent script and then let him work with NO kibbitzing from execs who wouldn't be able to find their own genitals with both hands in broad daylight due to incompetence.

I think David already knows O6 is the Engineers home world and planned this all along, some stuff just seems more than pure coincidence.

AC was better than Prometheus and didn't have Lindelof involved and most Alien connected movies are better than Prometheus so keep him away. Maybe he could redeem himself with the next Alien draft if he got a chance but I don't know. I would probably prefer if he stayed away from Alien movies.
