While the $36 million domestic opening weekend is below some earlier predictions, Ridley Scott's latest delivered one of the Alien franchise's strongest debuts.

Take a look below to see the domestic box office debuts of every Alien movie in both adjusted and unadjusted form, as well as their worldwide totals.

Alien Covenant's estimated debut is the third-highest of the franchise. Prometheus, which did not use the "Alien" name, reportedly had a higher production budget than Covenant, however, which would play a role in how Fox, the distributors of the film, would view each respective debut.

Alien Covenant also stands up even when every film's debut is adjusted for inflation.

Thanks Ati - I have not been able to go see it yet(under the weather-i dont want to be that guy blowing his nose and sneezing ruining it for everyone) so i like to read anything without spoilers.  And i was curious how it held up against the others

So it's holding up good (the marketing has been high)? Let's hope there will be another, connecting to the original Alien movie.

Well, this is good. The worries on the forum have revolved around the mixed reactions critically (and the audience ratings of course) and it seems that this prequel escapade can't get enough positive reviews, really. Money usually is what comes down to greenlighting a sequel though.

Still, myself and others have noted that the theaters were not really even closed to full on Thursday or Friday (I mean, that's only a few people on the forum, including myself, so it doesn't paint the full picture, bu it is worrying). It did secure the top box office numbers this weekend, that's good. Now Pirates is out this week, so that will probably put a dent in the numbers for Alien. Also, Baywatch. I tihnk a pretty high number of people will opt to go see a fun, so-bad-it's-good movie as opposed to either Pirates or Alien. Still, I think the foot traffic at theaters will keep people's interest in seeing Covenant up enough to secure the sequel, financially that is.

I guess I imagine the profit for Covenant basically equalling Prometheus. Which will maybe convince Fox to give Ridley a bit more control story wise and add a bit more back to the budget for future installments.

Well, its good that a series has improved on an audience but Alien was the first for the series and I remember tickets being about 3 bucks back then.  And I saw Alien in the movie theater about three times.  Even when the director's cut came back in the 2000s.  I prefer the theatrical cut better.

At the same time, look how much those movie costs, compared to Alien Covenant that cost 97 to 104 million

Alien - 11 million that made 104 million worldwide

Aliens - 18 million that made 131 million worldwide

Alien3- 50 million that made over 150 million worldwide

Alien Res - 75 million that made 160 million worldwide

AvP - 60 million that made 172 million worldwide

AvP Requiem - 60 million that made over 128 million worldwide

Prometheus - 130 million that made 403 million worldwide

Covenant - 97 million that is currently sitting in the red at 117 million.

Once you view it in that context; every film has made a profit; except Covenant thus far.

LVBank - You are welcome. + chli and cuponator3000 - The movie is very fresh at the moment. Covenant will open in China in June and in Japan in September. I'm going to update its numbers continuously.

Well, I hope China (which did not play Prometheus) and Japan can help its box office numbers.

It is a shame after the weekend is now over; GotG has beaten Covenant on a Monday.

The new prequel sequel posted the fourth best opening of the franchise.

It sounds worse than it is to report Alien: Covenant opened lower —at $36M—than both Prometheus ($51M, or $56M adjusted for inflation) and Alien vs. Predator ($38M, or $55M adjusted for inflation). Technically, with inflation adjustment, the new prequel is also posting a debut that’s smaller than Alien 3‘s ($19M, or $41M adjusted for inflation).

Opening numbers reflect the excitement for a movie and not its overall success or appreciation, and those top three Alien installments were very big moments for the franchise in terms of fanticipation. And each was met with a level of disappointment, so the follow-ups to each, Covenant now included, were not as enticing to moviegoers.

Box office success does not = good movies.  Michael Bay movies, anyone?

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.  I watched Androids blow and finger each other's flutes.
