I'm sorry, but I just don't care all that much. I want to see new characters and new stories and that's exactly what we're getting with these prequels

yeah I didn't like the idea of his Alien 2.5 script. just going backwards and getting messy. Ridley Scott knows what he wants to do and Im happy to follow that. Every day we are seeing and hearing great news about where he is taking Covenant and Awakening, and he's already said he open to more than just 3 prequels!!!

MemberTrilobiteApr-30-2017 4:22 PM

I think it has been too long. I was amped back when the news dropped but now I would rather move on.

Yeah same dk. There's been too much will-they-or-wont-they. and now we've all lost interest in it.

In Ridley we trust.

IRaptus- as a gamer, it also reminded me a bit of the Half Life 3 mystery. Everyone was in a fevered pitch for about a decade and now no one GAF- I don't even look anymore.

ModeratorPraetorianApr-30-2017 4:50 PM

hahah good parallels. Yeah I remember after both Half-life 2 and resurrection there was talk and hype straight away about their sequels......

James Cameron risks doing that with his Avatar films. Longest active production time for a sequel in history.

dk

MemberTrilobiteApr-30-2017 4:52 PM

I have never seen Avatar and just haven't felt an inkling to. What was it 2003 when it came out lol?

Ripley is done, her arc is over. Also, WAY too much time has passed, and age is a factor. It would be absolute stupidity to try ALIENS 2.5 or whatever it was they were tossing about.

Like you guys, I prefer new people, new storylines, as part of the Overall Arc.

The title of the franchise is ALIEN, not 'RIPLEY'. ;)

It would be interesting to see the Alien and Blade Runner movies to merge somehow. RS said they were in the same universe if memory serves. There would be a lot of potential to explore androids and the human condition.

I'm pretty sure Ridley has even stated before that he sees the main character of his film as the Alien itself. I don't think he gives a rip (pun intended) about Ripley's  character anymore

I've a feeling AC is going to do big business at the box office, which kind of hammers another nail into the coffin of Alien 5.

Blomkamp's stock is quite low at the moment, so he probably likes being mentioned in connection to an Alien movie, keeps him somewhat relevant.

Ridley Scott should be the navigator of this series of movies, as he started it all and is taking the whole thing into exciting new areas.

While there's been no Definitive Absolute statement that both are in the same universe, there are points to consider, so maybe R. Scott MIGHT yet bridge them.

The Beautiful & Disturbing ‘Shared Universes’ of Blade Runner and Alien

" Actually... if you want to truly make the connection, then yes. Here's the deal: Prometheus is in the same universe as Alien, and on the special features of the DVD FOR Prometheus, there's a thing where you can read Peter Weyland's journal. In that journal, he mentions Tyrell, who made the replicants. Now, are special features canon? Eh, up to you. But there is definitely a connection. And that connection is Weyland making androids and thinking Tyrell's replicants aren't going to pan out (which they don't). "

" Yes, but i think the vision for the universe splits when Cameron does his take on it.

Alien + BR + Prometheus + Alien Isolation = Ridley's vision

Alien + Aliens + Darkhorse spin offs = Jim's vision "

Bingo, because "Aliens" didn't really happen in the "real" canon under Ridley, so the story is moot.

MemberChestbursterApr-30-2017 5:26 PM

@dk save yourself the trouble and misery. Similar to "Aliens", "Avatar" is an overblown bunch of pretentious Hollywood schlock. The sequel will be worse. Those creatures look horrible, and the story is just ridiculous.

Thanks BWW! I will not hold my breath but will be on board if it happens- by then I might be in a Long Term Care center eating mush and prune juice and Rs' son will be directing.

I was really excited at first, mostly because I'm absolute trash for Ripley/Hicks' possible romance. But as stated above several times, too much time has passed, and the prequels have just become more intriguing. Alien 5 would feel like going back in time, and the passing years haven't been doing Sigourney any favors in the rebooting Ripley department. (Lets not forget Michael Biehn's age either.) However if the film truly did ever happen I would definitely go see it, but the initial excitment has dissipated entirely.

What's the story, MUTHUR?

Was intrigued when I heard Ridley would produce, but wasn't that excited. Felt it was risky territory to a degree.

At this point I hope it isn't made. Now that we see the kind of depth and elegance Ridley is attempting to go for with AC, it seems ridiculous.

I think many of us were feeling starved 4 years after Prometheus with little to feed us. Now that we've had some new stuff to munch on, I feel everyone is thinking a little more clearly about the Blomkamp project. I will still watch it if it's made, but I don't have high expectations.

You said it, and summed it up pretty well. AVATAR had so much potential, but was scarred with Cameron's pretentious, egomaniacal fingerprints.

dk

Yw :) LOL yeah, AVATAR and it's sequel release dates...I'm waiting to hear that 'Oh, wait, we'll seriously, for reals, this time we mean it be releasing the first sequel in 2020' :D

HappyXeno

Yeppers, agree with all your points, the Time factor and Age issues make it untenable.

Sorry BWW- I meant that I was not holding out for the Alien and BR universes would somehow meet up. For Avatar- I couldn't care less.

Guys - I need to throw this out there.  The whole Weyland Journal referring to Tyrell was just an Easter Egg.

I really do think that Ridley needs to be asked that question, tho.

MemberXenomorphApr-30-2017 6:03 PM

Oh and as far as Alien 5 yeah I would love to see it go into production and done properly.  A side story with Hicks, Newt and Ripley still alive after Aliens.  Hell yeah.

Rick- DING! Light buld goes on to relay the question to Chris. Thanks!

I love Alien 3, I just wish the special effects were improved!!!

...but yeah, another sequel to Aliens could be fun! Full steam ahead, Neill Blomkamp!

ModeratorPraetorianApr-30-2017 6:08 PM

Rick, Is that a question for Chris to ask maybe ;-) ?

EDIT: Sorry dk, you beat me to it.

IRaptus- Go for it anyway. Maybe you can word it better than I did? Either way, he will see two similar posts and might add it to his list.

Er, guys, it's funny that I am seeing you post about Bladerunner and Alien being in the same cinematic universe while bashing James Cameron - wasn't it in Aliens that the first such pebble was cast...

Which reminds me - I saw people bashing the released footage from Alien Covenant, stating that Shaw's hair had grown too long too quickly. Yet not once has anyone commented on how as a side effect of 57 years in hypersleep Ripley mysteriously developed a perm.

But to bring the thread back on track. IMO Alien 3 is a bad movie. Tonally it is depressing, the characters, especially Ripley, are one-dimensional, the narrative flow and continuity are a mess and the visual effects are confused. Yet the fact that enough of Alien 3 could be used to tell a somewhat cohesive story despite the horrors the director faced during its production is a testament as to how good a director David Fincher truly is.

Now for Blomkamp's Alien movie - I both agree and disagree with Ridley Scott. IMO a lot of fans seem to blindly go wherever Scott leads them. At this point 5 years ago many of us were praising Prometheus before we witnessed its many flaws. Don't get me wrong Alien Covenant has my interest, but I'll reserve praise until it's deserved; if the film delivers. But as for Blomkamp, I don't feel he should make an Alien movie, but I do see potential in his pitch for a movie that could finish Ripleys arc amicably, drive the franchise forward post Ripley and give the fans some much-needed answers and closure on some of the franchises many mysteries, while building on some of the new mysteries Scott has introduced with his prequels.

If Blomkamp's Alien 5 happens, it will include the mandatory rules of Blomkamp filmmaking: Sharlto Copley acting his ass off (only fooking exaggerated and beyond is acceptable), robots, futuristic weapons inspired by video game weapons. Futuristic weapons fired at xenos and robots. In slowmotion.

Whatever happens previously, an aged Ripley, old man Hicks and a middle aged Newt end up in Johannesburg. There they encounter a crazy Sharlto Copley, xenos, fooking gangstas and at least 15 robots. More slowmotion.

...

No thanks.

i am not interested in Blomkamps Alien film.

* Ripley's time in this film universe is over. Her character would have to be forced back into a film by either some contrived manuever or some altering time lines etc.

* As Black winter witch stated above, i also prefer they go in new directions, new characters and explore new mysteries and mythology.

All of Blomkamps filsm beside District 9 have been underwhelming to awful, i dont want him tinkering with this stuff

I prefer Ridley Scotts vision for this film universe and from i am seeing and been hearing his canon for what he is doing will only be Prometheus, Alien Covenant, Alien and whatever else he comes up in the next few years as prequels or sequels to what he is doing.

I prefer love watching Aliens but not include it in this mythology as they turned the aliens into something they werent intended to be. I look at that movie as a "what if" comicbook but i do love watching it. I choose to not include A3 and i totally hate the trash heap that was AR

so i like keeping my canon with what Ridleys vision is, no need to add another misfire i have to pretend didnt happen like AR, so no thanks to Blomkamp but stay out of the alien film universe
