However, if you have, then the voice over attributed to David raises some images in my mind that I thought might be worth sharing. To wit, after the scene of mass destruction with the black goo bombs David is alleged to later say something along the followling lines:
“The gods have rejected mankind as cruel, weak and full of greed. They are a dying species, grasping for resurrection. So they are leaving the earth forever. But their power is an illusion. They don’t deserve to start again, and I’m not going to let them.”
The story of Belshazzar from the book of Daniel for some reason came to mind after reading David's alleged voice over commentary. Belshazzar was the prince regent of Babylon who greatly displeased God by using the sacred objects captured from the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem as serving objects for a feast he was throwing. During the festivities a disembodied hand begins writing words on a wall of the palace. While the words themselves are in a language known to the Babylonians, none of the wise men are able to interpret their meaning. Enter Daniel who says in effect that the words mean that you have been weighed and found wanting, your days have been numbered, and your kingdom will be given over to the new kids in town the Persians and the Medes. And sure enough, that very night the Persians showed up killed Belshazzar and seized the city.
In Prometheus we are led to believe that the Engineers had already more or less weighed humanity in the balance and were going to wipe us out 2000 years ago, until according to David "everything went to shit." So is David merely following up on what the Engineers planned? Are they the "gods" that David referred to in the voice over, or is there a higher order that would include the Engineers and all humans in their assessment? If the destruction of Pardise is part of this plan, then I have to think that David is now either following orders from this new higher power or else he has assumed that role on his own. Since he is apparently trying to create a perfect organism is his plan not merely to destroy humanity, but also to replace us with xeno type creatures? "To create, one must first destroy" has some pretty heavy overtones in this context. One final thought, does David's voice over commentary mean that the Earth is dying at the time of the movie, and man's only hope is to colonize space? It sure seems that he is suggesting that.
