If you take a look at the photo...

His bottom jaw seems to split as he releases his atomic breath. Why is this? I'm not too sure myself. Does the reason involve self-inflicted damage? What do you guys think?

***SPOILER WARNING!!!!***

***SPOILER WARNING!!!!***

I can confirm this.  When Godzilla unleashes his three stage Atomic Breath, his uper jaw stretches back and his lower mandible splits like a snake (or Otachi).  This is followed by the first stage of the blast.

I freaked out when I saw it in the theater.  It was badass. :)

I was split on it at first (no pun intended) but after seeing it in action I love it. It's like his body is trying to push the jaws as far away as they can from the searing heat. Not that it needs explanation, but it's an interesting little aesthetic.

CHRISREMIX - How fantastic! I am extremely pleased by this revelation! This new incarnation of Godzilla is a true mutant; quite obviously altered to a staggering degree by exposure to atomic material! Hmm...I wonder what other mutations he might evidence? The suspense is palpable! :)

GMAN2887 - As an aside, is it true that Shin-Gojira is completely computer generated? I have heard that this is the case. :)

Does his jaw reattach later? I'm sure Godzilla's healing factor could/would fix that easily. It's still badass none the less.

@KingKaijuGojira

I think his mouth is like the MUTOs. Where it appears his jaw is attached when closed, but de-attaches when doing a certain action.

KINGKAIJUGOJIRA - From what I have been able to observe, it seems as if his lower mandible is adapted to make the transition. If that is the case, then I am certain that the bone and tissue structures will rejoin after his atomic breath has been discharged. :)

Something Real, makes sense.

Chris Remix, but the Muto's lower jaws were connected. They just had mandibes that flexed out from the sides.

Maybe it's the purple beam but this atomic breath and Godzilla remind me of Genosaur from the show zoids that I watched as a kid.

@KaijuKingGojira:

His lower jaw realigns into it's former state upon finishing his atomic blast.  Trust me, the scene in which he closes his mouth again (and the sequence before it) will be a moment you'll never forget.

@SomethingReal:

Although Toho reported that the film would feature an entirely CGI Godzilla, rest assured, THIS IS NOT THE CASE. :) There are PLENTY of practical shots in the movie, including a ton of work with the big Godzilla puppet seen in the famous leaked images, and large mineature sets!  There is a ton of CG in the movie, but trust me... the images will take your breath away.  Toho has come a LONG way with its CGI. Plus, the CG Godzilla is very much in the tokusatsu spirit, so it feels very authentic.

Expect my review very soon!

Not feeling the "enhancements" they made to G, but it's their baby and they can do what they want with him, as they have several times over the last 62 years. I'm a bit of a Godzilla purist. It's still Godzilla though. Glad it's doing well.
