Day One

I woke up. It was day time. I didn't realize I fell asleep, and I started looking around. I was in a tree. I remember that. I saw the Desert Eagle. It was still in pieces. I wiped it down with a paper towel that was in my bag. Man was I glad that bag is waterproof. Everything felt smooth. I guess I finished cleaning it. I put the handgun back together and loaded it up.

I looked at Bryce. The bipod on the rifle was unfolded. The butt spike was adjusted so that the rifle was held dead still, pointed at the ground. Bryce's hand was still on the grip, his finger still on the trigger, and Bryce was sound asleep. I decided to let him sleep. I made sure the Desert Eagle cycled properly.

It did, and I removed the mag. After making sure there wasn't a round in the chamber, I cocked it and pulled the trigger. I heard the firing pin snap. The handgun is working like it should. I grabbed my shotgun and cleaned it too. It's best to keep a weapon clean, no matter how much or how little you used it. When I first got my .22, I cleaned it when
I was done, generally forty to sixty rounds in one session. When I got my .308, I cleaned it when I was done as well, usually five to ten shots, but I'd clean it if I took even one shot. It keeps everything working right.

Once I was done with the shotgun, I set it down and looked at the beach. I couldn't see much from this height, so I carefully took the rifle from Bryce. Bryce didn't wake up, and I took aim. More bodies were washing up on shore, and there were at least forty still in the water. I couldn't look anymore. I was about to stop aiming, but I saw something that got my attention. There was half a body. I focused the scope on it, and it looked like it was torn in half.

I decided it was time to wake Bryce up. I woke him up gently, and he quickly realized he didn't have the rifle.

"Where's the rifle?"

"I've got it, don't worry. You were asleep and I wanted to take a look at the beach."

"I was worried that I had lost it or something."

"It was funny actually. You were sound asleep, still holding the rifle as though you were about to take a shot. Your eye was still within the eye relief for the scope. It was hilarious."

"Thanks."

"Anyway, I was going to let you keep sleeping, but I need you to watch my back."

"Oh?"

"Well, there's a body out there that was ripped in half. I want to check it out."

"You morbid bastard."

"I want to see what ripped it in half. Might be able to figure out what caused the ship to sink."

"Got it. So I'm coming down with you?"

"No, you're staying up here with the sniper."

"You know I'm not the best shot."

"Yeah, but you're better shot then some people I've met."

"I'm still not comfortable doing this."

"I'll dial the scope in for you so that all you need to do is line up the crosshairs and pull the trigger."

"Thanks."

I looked at the dope chart on the stock, and then I checked the scope. It was dialled in for the elevation properly. It was a calm day, so we didn't have to worry about the bullet being affected by the wind.

"Bryce, it's good."

"You didn't do anything though."

"You adjusted it properly last night."

"Really?"

"Yes."

"Awesome."

I climbed down the tree. It was a big climb, but I didn't have the Tac-50 on my back to worry about. I reached the bottom, and started walking towards the body. I looked up in the tree for a minute, and I got a thumbs up from Bryce. Good, he's watching. I reached the body after walking for a minute, and I looked down at it. It looked like it was bitten in half. I looked around for a minute, and I thought I saw something inside. I didn't want to, but I reached for what I thought I saw.

In the tree, Bryce was watching still. He looked away when I reached into the guts, and he saw something. He lined up the sights on it, and recognized it as a carnivore. He looked at me for a minute. My back was turned. The predator was looking at me, and Bryce aimed for the head. He pulled the trigger, and the bullet sailed over its head. I turned around and saw the predator, another Velociraptor, and it had ducked. It was looking at the tree. I had set my shotgun down, so it would be easy to reach it. Now is a good a time as any to test out the Desert Eagle.

I grabbed the handgun with both my hands, brought it up and took aim. I held my breath, lined up the sights, and slowly squeezed the trigger. The Raptor wasn't paying attention, so I could take my sweet time aiming. Without warning, the handgun went off. I felt it push my hands, and I grinned as the Velociraptor dropped. I reached back into the body for a minute, and pulled out what I saw. It was a tooth, almost eight inches long. I started walking back to the tree.

When I got there, I showed Bryce what I found.

"What is it?"

"It's a tooth."

"A tooth? What the hell has teeth that big?"

"T-Rex, Giganotosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, Mosasaurus."

"Alright smartass, what's that tooth from."

"It's from a Mosasaurus. This tooth is from the son of a bitch that sunk our ship."

"That's a big animal."

"Yes, yes it is. Probably the least of our worries now though."

"Why?"

"We're on land and that's where we're staying. Just wondering, what happened?"

"What do you mean?"

"You shot and missed."

"Scope must be off."

"Give me the rifle."

Bryce handed me the rifle, and I took aim. I saw the body of the Velociraptor. That would make a suitable target. I lined up the crosshairs on its eye, took a deep breath and held it, then slowly squeezed the trigger. The rifle went off, and the bullet went right where I lined up the crosshairs. I looked at Bryce.

"Either you didn't hold your breath, or you jerked the trigger. Hold your breath, and the rifle stays steadier. Squeeze the trigger, and the rifle stays close to target. The recoil should be unexpected. Don't hold your breath, and the rifle is everywhere. Jerk the trigger, and the rifle moves off target."

"I see. Just like you Shaggy. Even in high school you explained stuff to me like that."

"Makes it easy to understand."

"It does."

I cleaned the guns, and then we ate from our emergency rations. We talked about what we were going to do, and what we should do. Most of the day was spent watching for survivors. Tomorrow, we go farther inland. We need a better shelter, and we need a water source. There's a river about two miles from where we are, and if we follow it, we should find good hunting grounds. I have flares, so if a rescue helicopter comes by, we'll be able to get its attention.

Nice chapter! I assumed a mosasaur sunk the ship.
