Honestly, at this point I'm thinking just ToHo. As long as I've wanted to see Godzilla done beautifully in CGI, I think he's better off in their hands. By 2018 we could have at least four more Godzilla movies if they were doing them again.

Over the course of 16 years, American studios have made two movies at a cost of almost $300 mil (not including marketing), and neither one is remotely close to the best ToHo's been able to do, with rubber suits and model cities.

I am hopeful for the second one, but it needs to be much better than the first.

^Agreed with toho. Altough, legendary did do alot better than tristars version. To be honest, i really don't think suitmation could have done better than the CGI on making more realistic animal movements, but at the end of the day, after watching G14 for the 10th time, i do have to say i have seen far better films with suitmation.

But then we must also consider that in terms of consistent quality. Most of the films we hold above the American-made ones are simply brilliant as movies in general, 1954 being the star-child. Quite honestly, though an avid fan of the old films, a lot of them didn't have as great of general filmmaking quality as Legendary's product (quality not equating to budget, but direction and feel), some notable examples notwithstanding.

^The 1954 movie stands alone by itself in its own catagory. The documentary-style realism is what makes the 54 film stand alone. Eiji tsuburaya's special effects along with Harou Nakajima's suit acting help make you feel that godzilla was actually alive in that movie.

I can't think of any studio in particular. I don't think you can base this type of thing off studios alone moreso off the writers and directors that are attached to it.

^Well said, it does all depend on hows hands it's in. Personally i think Guilmelo del toro would be a great director for a future godzilla film.

While I'm not very confident in any other American studio making Godzilla movies, I wouldn't call Toho a lot better at this point. In the last thirty years Toho has handed Godzilla down to novice, in-house directors, prior assistant directors as their first projects and maintained their persistant, rushed production schedule on them. Kazuki Omori, Shusuke Kaneko and Ryuhei Kitamura are the exceptions. Of those three directors' four movies only two were outstanding.

Okawara and Tezuka made passable efforts, but lacked the experience and attention to detail to make great films. Gareth Edwards is sort of in between the Okawara/Tezuka group and the Omori/Kaneko grouping. He's got the talent that surpasses the first group, but his lack of experience shows as a director.

It's also a hard comparison as Japanese are concerned with far different visual attributes than western directors, but within their realm Kaneko and Omori are Edwards' superiors. Okawara and Tezuka on the other hand... Toho should work to get more outside talent if they wish to make Godzilla films that go above and beyond the call.

(I should also note I'm speaking of Omori specifically as a director. He's a much better director than writer-- I hope he never touches another Godzilla screenplay with a 15 foot pole.)

@Durp004 and BBB - I agree totally. The studio really doesn't matter, and yes, this version is head and shoulders above '98; definitely a step in the right direction. I do think Edwards is a very good director and it shows in this movie. Some of his framing and shots are beautiful. The whole creative team in general was top notch. But having just seen this movie for a fourth time, I'm sorry to say, I like it less and less with each viewing, as a Godzilla movie. Godzilla seems like such an afterthought in it. It completely irks me.

To contrast, I watched Pacific Rim right after and I love that movie. It has a fair amount of robot/monster action and when they're not fighting, I actually like the characters. They make me laugh (Newt, Herman and Hannibal), and feel for them, in the case of Raleigh, Mako, Stacker, and the Australian father/son team. For me the story moves along and I love the fights. They're fun and you can generally see what's going on! I can't see anyone who's into giant monsters or robots not liking this!

But, in any case, I'm hoping Edwards and company up their game for the sequel. It needs to be much better.

Koldwarkid- Dont worry im not gonna disagree with you, and i do agree with alot of your points in thi post above me, but let me explain where i think you are wrong.

Godzilla was not at all a afterthought in this film, he was front and center the film revolved around Godzilla and the MUTO'S that was the entire point. The film was about Humanity trying to cope with Giant Beasts roaming around, Godzilla was the main beast he was the one that Serizawa and Stenz feared more then the Mutos he was the main guy He Was The Force of Nature to Protect The Balance of Earth.

Good grief.

@GMan2887 - I agree with your point of ToHo getting outside talent to help with these movies. That's something I've thought of for quite some time. Sure, it would cost a bit more money and time, but the end product may benefit greatly.

I'm just very down on American productions of this, because I feel so burned by both, for different reasons obviously. I know it's also not very fair, because there's not exactly a huge sampling. I was very excited for this movie and everything was pointing to it being pretty awesome, but it was a huge letdown for this fan.

@GG - I know you love this movie my friend, and I respect that, but I just don't have that same love for it. It's just not doing it for me. Like I said, the whole team behind it was incredible. I even liked the music; a lot in fact. So, I'm hoping for a kick-ass Godzilla 2. My butt will be in the seat for it.
