Do you guys wonder why Legendary chose Gareth Edward as director since they are many others to choose like James Cameron, Steven Speilburg, and Ridley Scott?

Because they wanted something out of the ordinary. Legendary saw Monsters, and from what i read in interviews, loved it a lot. They realised that Gareth was the only person who could truly do it justice.

Legendary from the start didnt want a transformers/Avatar-styled monster movie, they wanted something more quite and beautifull, which is why Gareths innocent form of film making fit this.

A wise choice Legendary. What wasnt such a nice touch was hiring a monkey too write the script. Come on Legendary, what is he supposed too do with what you gave him!?

As much as Legendary may say they believed in Gareth and that may have been some of it, I think a large reason was that he'd be cheaper to hire than any of those big names. Now he has some credit and is getting more bigtime movies under his belt, but at the time he was essentially and unknown to most people.

I tend to agree with Durp on this. I do also think they were impressed with what he did with Monsters. I rented it and was equally impressed with what he accomplished given the shoestring budget and the fact that he did the effects on his personal computer. After viewing it though I found it was a bit uneventful and on the boring side. For a movie called Monsters, you don't see a whole lot of the creatures in it. I think Godzilla suffered from a lot of the same issues. Gareth is going to be a very good director. He has great vision and he did some real nice things in Godzilla, but if you're going to have a powerful, fast sports car, every so often you need to get it over 55 and open it up. Otherwise, what's the point?

I agree with ZillaHater here.

Gareth is an amazing director, and the universe he created for Godzilla is a unique and interesting one. It's just the terrible writing that really brought the movie down.

I am curious and looking forward to his take on Star Wars however.

RAZG - What an interesting question! Hmm, I've considered this on more than one occassion and, at the end of each series of thoughts, I come to two conclusions. The first is that Legendary saw a great deal of potential in Edwards through the scope of his film, Monsters, and wanted to bring that fresh creativity to their product. The second is the theory that Legendary is interested in breathing new life into the industry by hiring young directors with vision - so as to continue the legacy of great film makers! :)

No matter what anyone says, Gareth Edwards is a great director and I enjoy his apporoach

and take on the genre. I'm still curious why they hired a writer with really NO experience.

Also Gareth being a Godzilla fan, motivates me very much. Heres an idea why not make Gareth the director and writer?

@GG. Do you really want borenstein in the sequel even after awakening? I love the new movie 4/5 stars B+, but after reading awakening, i have no faith on the human element now he is onboard. Can he pull it off? I really hope so. Another risk the produers are taking? (FYI, Affleck as batman) No doubt.
