THIS DISCUSSION MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

This new Godzilla film, no matter how awesome it was, isn’t without its flaws. While surfing the internet, reading the plethora of reviews, we realized that (and some of you might have as well) the majority of the film critics stated three major flaws:

 

1. Not enough Godzilla

2. Thin, badly scripted, humorless, stone faced (etc…) human characters

3. Lack of a coherent plot.

 

Just recently, an article was published on The Atlantic:

 

Basically, the gentleman states that modern monster movies are reduced to a collection of boisterous, flamboyant but soulless CG imagery and effects, with no real characters and a coherent plot, lacking the metaphor, social messages and political satire the classics are known for (e.g. The original King Kong was partly a satire on slavery and imperialism. The original Gojira was a film showing the fears of nuclear weapons shared by the Japanese).

 

We here at Melbourne intend to change that.

 

With help from the Drama department, as well as local (and secret) G-fans, we are hoping to start a major fan project, to create a strong, serious story about Godzilla. We intend to submit our work to the studio responsible in resurrecting the King this year, Legendary Pictures, and hopefully, they will take us seriously, but that depends on the quality of our work, something we aim to excel in.

 

We would love to have feedback as well as some ideas from the Scified community, and hopefully, you share the same burning passion and seriousness in making this project into a reality.

 

Please be reminded that this is a SERIOUS project, and we would like all of you who would like to participate to be SERIOUS about it. Absolutely no swearing, no name-calling, no ‘trolling’ whatsoever. We intend to create a quality piece of work, not immature, B-movie grade crap.

 

All right then, we’ll start:

 

This is something we conjured up during our spare time. It isn’t polished or anything, and certainly needs more work on the human side of it, but we hoped to capture some of the irony and symbolism present on the classic Toho pictures we adored for so long. In our story, we address the issue of nuclear terrorism, climate change as well as the concept of a closer alliance between East and West.

ACT I - In the Beginning

 

> San Francisco aftermath

- Godzilla retreats to the Japan Trench. The Japanese and U.S. navies surrounds the area with battleships, creating a perimeter, watched 24/7.

- The Monarch organization grew exponentially,  no longer a secret program, now officially under the United Nations.

- Kaiju sightings increase worldwide:

> Giant shrimp found washed ashore in the Bahamas.

> Monster octopus caught on supertanker propellers.

> Man eating plant destroys Brazilian village, 5 dead, 40 more injured.

 

 

> The Beijing Crisis

- A terrorist organisation acquires a functioning fission bomb of unknown origin, feared supplied from North Korea.

- The terrorists own a C-130, circling Beijing from 45 000 feet, with the warhead inside, with fuel for 4 days.

- They hold Beijing for ransom, one hundred billion dollars, in exchange for the warhead. They give a deadline of three days. If ransom not paid, the bomb detonates directly above Beijing, showering the city with radiation for decades.

- A U.S. and PRC joint task force attempt to intercept the plane over Beijing.

- The team of six was successful, and turns the plane towards Guam for bomb extraction and debriefing.

- One of the terrorists survive, commits suicide by exploding C4 on his chest, blowing a hole in the plane.

- Plane crash lands on Senkaku Island, all hands deceased.

- Two teams are sent there, one to extract the bomb and to check for leaks, and one from Monarch, to determine presence of Kaiju in the vicinity.

> Anguirus awakens

- As the teams near the island, the bomb detonates.

- Team One scans the area, finds that the radiation levels are dropping.

- Team Two deploys a probe to scan the area.

- The radiation levels are nearing zero, the island began to shake.

- Satellite imagery and scans show movement underground.

- The island vomits out earth and rocks, Anguirus emerges.

- Team Two confirms new kaiju, informs Monarch HQ.

- Anguirus heads Northeast, towards mainland China.

> Godzilla awakens

- Movement detected in the Japan Trench.

- The sea explodes, Godzilla emerges, heads west, towards Anguirus.

- The Japanese and U.S. are ordered to open fire, but does no damage.

- Godzilla continues to swim west, with the two navies tailing behind him.

ACT II - Rampage across China

 

> Anguirus vs. Godzilla

- Anguirus appears at Shanghai, demolishes the city.

- Godzilla appears at Shanghai, attacks Anguirus.

- Anguirus retreats, Godzilla follows in hot pursuit, heading for Fuzhou.

> Project BIOLLANTE (BIOsynthetic Large-scale pLAsmidic Neo- Teratogenic Entity)

- Monarch have been experimenting on Godzilla cells, collected from the San Francisco, and splicing it with the plant organism found in Brazil.

- Cells from plant kaiju was extracted, spliced with G-cells while the dead organism was destroyed.

>The new kaiju, dubbed Biollante’,  was created and grown, like a plant, until it gains consciousness. The kaiju was kept in stasis via specially formulated herbicide.

>As precaution, the Biollante has its genes modified for aggressive allergic reaction when exposed to a synthetically formulated pheromone.

- The kaiju developed immunity from the herbicide, breaks free, destroys lab, and killed many personnel before escaping Monarch research compound in rural Kansai region, heading towards Nara.

- The kaiju destroyed Nara, by planting itself in a garden, and growing an extensive root system, for both defence and offense, covering the whole of underground Nara.

- A joint task force consisting of  U.S. military and Japan Self Defense Force personnel infiltrated to the Quarantined City of Nara, injecting the pheromones into the ground in liquid form.

- Biollante was affected, but not defeated. The root systems developed into large limbs, and the monster forest literally walked itself out of danger.

- The kaiju was bombarded with missiles, and, since it was still in its infancy, was defeated, its burning body falling to the ground.

 

> Godzilla vs. Anguirus (cont’d)

- Meanwhile, the two kaijus are still fighting, appearing at Fuzhou, and completely leveling the city, before the chase resumed, Anguirus fleeing towards Hong Kong as Godzilla follows behind him.

- The navies have converged in Hong Kong bay, waiting the arrival of the two kaijus, while rapidly evacuating the millions still in the city.

- Godzilla and Anguirus levelled the city. As Anguirus attempts to flee, Godzilla caught him off guard, and the fight continues towards the South China Sea.

- The Chinese and U.S. decided to drop two nukes on top of them, with a total yield of approx. 50 megatons. They waited until the kaijus are far beyond any populated areas.

- The nuke was dropped. Godzilla re-emerges soon after, and wearily returns back to the Japan Trench. Anguirus was nowhere to be seen.

ACT III - Osaka showdown

> Rampage aftermath

- It’s now two months since Godzilla’s rampage across the Chinese borders. Godzilla is still sleeping beneath the waves, guarded by two navies, which doubled their ship count, and intensified deep-sea satellite surveillance

- .The Japanese, with extensive aid from the U.S., are still struggling in restoring Nara. The corpse of Biollante is curiously growing. The two governments are concerned, periodically injecting pheromones and gassing the area with it. Curiously, the entire region, and some of the neighbouring regions, lost soil nutrients to the ever growing carcass, turning the soil into a sand-like state. Plants and crops in the region are dying out.

> Monarch concludes that the organism did not die, and developed an immunity to the pheromone, but lost its consciousness, reverting back to a plant-like state, but has a chance to regain consciousness.

> The entire city of Nara was declared a Quarantine zone, with the JSDF surrounding the plant carcass with personnel and heavy artillery around the clock.

- Anguirus was nowhere to be seen, presumed dead.

> Biollante awakens

- The carcass suddenly began to move, resulting in a massive 6 pointer earthquake.

- Biollante arose, and bloomed, now fully matured, a 2 megaton (2 000 000 tons) kaiju, 250 meters tall, with a root network reaching hundreds of square kilometers.

- Biollante dragged itself towards Osaka, her roots trying their best to support her weight, as the entire Nara and neighbouring regions have their soil completely robbed of nutrients.

>Due to her massive size, Biollante requires direct contact with the ground at all times, digging her roots deep into the soil, to support her weight, and to extract more nutrients.

> Because of this, she leaves a trail of deep trenches, similar to small cliffs, as she walked.

> To travel long distances faster, she would travel semi-subterranean, ‘swimming’, so to speak, in the soil, reminiscent to a crocodilian swimming near the surface of the water.

- The militaries tried their best on trying to stop the creature from reaching Osaka. However, the Japanese will not allow use of Nuclear weapons within Japanese grounds.

- The U.S. confirms that Biollante will reach Osaka within two days.

- As the military continue their fight with the monster plant, Godzilla awakens.

> Convergence

- Godzilla angrily resurfaces and heads towards Osaka. The military follows closely behind.

- Anguirus sighted near the Ogasawara Islands chain, moving rapidly towards Godzilla.

- Military hope that the three monsters would destroy each other. Some suspect something greater will happen.

-Anguirus lands first, bursting from Osaka Bay, slowly making his way towards the city.

- Godzilla emerges, and tackles Anguirus before he reaches the city.

- Godzilla and Anguirus fights their way to Osaka Castle, and demolishes it while they fight.

- However, from a distance, came a deafening roar, never heard before by either man or kaiju, Biollante has arrived.

- Biollante enters the city, tearing through the earth, leaving behind a trail of dead earth. The giant kaiju rams through the two fighting monsters, flinging Godzilla and Anguirus away from the gardens.

- With both monsters temporarily down, Biollante took residence within the gardens, unleashing her roots deep into the soil. With her roots deep within the city, she rose, bloomed and roared, challenging the two other kaijus into battle.

> The Final Fight

- Godzilla rose from the ground, dazed but determined. He found himself several blocks away from Biollante. He advances, fighting his way through Biollante deadly vines.

- Anguirus joins the fight, biting his way through the defenses.

- The two monsters are overpowered, as the vines keep on coming. Godzilla pinned down by giant vines, while Anguirus is kept busy with waves of thorns.

- Godzilla blasts through the vines with his atomic breath, and advances towards Anguirus, helping him.

- Biollante defences are wearing thin. Godzilla and Anguirus easily fights through them. Eventually, they reach the castle gardens, with Biollante towering form waiting for them.

- Godzilla and Anguirus fight together, while Anguirus neutralises incoming vines with his powerful bite, Godzilla climbs Biollante, trying to reach her glowing core.

- Anguirus finds himself exhausted, and falls as vines overpower him.

- Godzilla fights with Biollante, who unleashes her acidic breath upon Godzilla.

- Godzilla, unable to see, stumbles down. Anguirus lept forward, biting into Biollante, saving time for Godzilla to recuperate.

- Godzilla rose, half his face scarred from the acid attack. As Anguirus pins Biollante down, Godzilla uses his powerful hands to rip Biollante guts from her body.

- Using his atomic breath, he separates Biollante upper body from her roots, rendering it useless. Then he proceeds to burn her to ashes.

- Godzilla and Anguirus roars in victory. Pardoning each other, they  both realised the value of an alliance, and went separate ways, Anguirus to the South China Sea and Godzilla back to the Japan Trench.

> Aftermath

- The Japanese and American forces continue to monitor the two monsters.

> The battleship perimeter remain around the Japan Trench

> The United States and members of ASEAN pool in resources to guard the South China Sea, in case Anguirus ever appears again.

- Kaiju sightings continue to grow in numbers, and in size. Rumors of giant moths and a new digging kaiju which collapsed an entire village, emerge around the world,  prompting Monarch to continue their search and, possibly, isolation of these creatures.
