Hey guys! As we all know the newest trailer dropped today, and by godzillla I have never been so excited for a movie as I am this one. I love how they even tie it to the original film back in 1954. The visual look stunning, the storyline is actually interesting. This trailer also laid to rest any rumors he will be killed by a nuke. What do you guys think?

If you haven't seen it, here it is!:

It was awesome, I love how they state that the nuclear tests didn't create him but they were trying to destroy him. Maybe the king will get more respect now.

Personally I am not impressed. You are right saying the visual effects are really good ,and the Craston speech is kinda appropriate for the level of destruction and all the events surrounding the film, but I'm feel disappointed because still it isn't reveal too muc. They used many scenes from the previous ones and it didn't reveal too much of Godzilla or the Mutos. The closing scene of the bunker is a nice one in context, but for me it cannot give a full appreciation of Godzilla face due he was far away and the perspective is in first person looking upwards; it is comprehensible due the perspective, but still a bad shot; I would preferred something like the scene when Godzilla roars after defeating Orga in G 2000 film, giving more details about his look

I don't expect them to reveal all of Godzilla until the film is released or images leak. They're using it as a tool to build hype, and I'm okay with that. We now have a general idea of what the king will look like. I think he looks like mean, and serious, which is how he was portrayed in the original film, now he's back c;

Well, rethinking about the scenes, how I would presented Godzilla in the trailer: When the flares are shot, instead of giving a look at the chest I would put Godzilla coming out from the smoke ala one of the drawings of Matt Frank posted here, revealing his face. For the ending I would put a bunch of military jets or helicopters ready to fight, then the view would change into a first person perspective from inside a cockpit, you know the pilot's point of view; then a glipse of Godzilla's facing at particular vehicle just to shot a fiery stream of his atomic breath directly to the screen. Those changes, at least for me would made this trailer a perfect work.

I thought it was...Okay...NAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!! THE NEW TRAILER WAS FREAKIN EPIC!!!!!

Personally i cant think of a another way to make this godzilla stand out the movie looks excellent... and who knows this actually might get people to see it now...

Well, you're right Jordan, everything is to rise the hype With some suspense; but I never liked the suspense because I found it kinda boring. I remember years ago when someone recommended me to see The Ring saying it was awesome and that gave him chills; but when I watched the movie I got too booooored that I almost fell asleep.

Admittedly, I was underwhelmed by the trailer at first. But upon second viewing I understand the genius behind it. Listen, Godzilla fans are going to see this movie regardless, but I think the idea of slowly revealing more and more of Godzilla, a piece at a time, is working for general audiences. It gets them intrigued and doesn't oversaturate the creature. It keeps him looming, mysterious and ultimately creepy. We need to stop thinking of this as a traditional, action Godzilla flick and more like a horror/post-apocalyptic movie, because it's practically how they're selling it. The atmosphere of the trailer is doing worlds more than some by-the-numbers shots of Godzilla roaring or fighting the military would-- which we've seen a thousand times.

I also loved how Watanabe's character said they "awakened something" in 1954. It's like a sigh of a relief. Doesn't sound like they're going strictly for the dinosaur origin or the modern mutation. It sounds like they're sticking pretty close to the original origin that Godzilla was awakened by the atomic bomb.

I also love the insinuation that the arms race was, at least in part, a cover up for trying to kill Godzilla. I love that kind of revisionist history in science fiction.

All in all this looks like it's going to be one brutal movie. I approve of how Legendary is mostly using Cranston and Watanabe to sell it. I also enjoy the apocalyptic feel to the entire trailer. There wasn't a single set piece that wasn't thrashed in it and everything looked like it had a strong sense of urgency to it. I pray this movie is as good as its trailers.

The points above are very fair, and specially because everything is going according the tone of the film, but I still feel unsatisfied. The reason we are going to see this movie is for Godzilla, he is the true main star in this film, and at least I expected to see a bit more of him there; imagine the trailers of the X-men movie without revealing the faces of the characters, kinda absurd, uh? I feel in that way with this without having clearer shots of Big G. But yet again, it's just my opinion due I find the suspense boring.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaFeb-25-2014 4:09 PM

@Gojira19

The "Godzilla is the star" nonesense is the fan perspective talking. Non-fans may not give a damn about the creature itself, but instead the characters involved in the film. Big names like Cranston and Watanabe taking center stage is a smart move to attract those kinds of people.

Even in the original movie the notion of Godzilla "being the star" was merely an on-set joke. While that ended up being the marketing plan for all subsequent films, actors like Takashi Shimura, who was not simply one of Japan's greatest actors, but a highly revered actor around the world, was widely touted in Japanese previews. And Toho heavily supported Akira Takarada who was the lead in Godzilla as well.

Godzilla may be the title monster, but he's not a lead character. The X-Men are. A better comparison would be the shark from Jaws. Although trailers didn't feature the shark very heavily, the title refers directly to it. Or Alien. The trailers also didn't feature the title creature in that movie very much either. Godzilla is taking a similar approach because, like the other two creatures, they aren't anthropomorphic characters people can relate to (like X-Men). They're monsters, generally considered the villains, that relatable characters are trying to survive.

It's safer to assume that Godzilla is a plot device rather than a character. All the best movies of the series utilized him in a similar fashion and it looks like he'll take that same position here-- though elevated in status by the surrounding characters. If you find said suspense boring I think you should probably keep your expectations in check for this movie. This isn't tokustatsu anymore. It won't be a traditional Godzilla film that showcases representational specticle over presentational suspense.

@GMAN: Well put.

You reminded me how Edwards stated one of the isnpirations for the tone of Godzilla 2014 is Apocalypse Now. The way you describe Godzilla being used as a device for this film/marketting reminds me of how Commander Kurtz (Marlon Brando) was used in Apocalypse Now. That movie is so amazing, and Kurtz is definitely depicted as an amazing and terrifying being.

Godzilla would be compared to "Bruce" from Jaws... You are right, the lead characters performed by the actors and the stories surrouding them are whom develope the plot and give you a good story when it is the case (in others could be bad, like Jaws 4 or Godzilla´s revenge), but honestly, in both cases you are seeing the film mostly for the creature itself. But what differencies Godzilla from Bruce, is that Big G already has a large trayectory and gained the enough presence to be considered an important "character", not a mere featured creature. That is the premise used in some statements from the upcoming items and descriptions "we are bringing back a loved character". I am not telling the trailer is bad, it shows the great development of the movie and the dramatic tone it has; it just me I did not feel thrilled because I prefered to see a bit more of Godzilla on it; at least having a brief glipse of him like thes instead the bunker scene:

I was, and still am, awestruck.

I had my doubts because I've probably been a Godzilla fan for longer than most of you have been alive!  >.<

I was quite impressed with the acting, the drama, the special effects and especially Godzilla.  I was one of the people against the "elephant feet" but with THIS Godzilla - you ain't lookin' at his feet!  He's jawdroppingly scary and majestic.

MHO?  I loved it and can't wait until May 16th.

The trailer just broke 1.1 million views on Youtube in less than 12 hours. None of the recent trailers in the past three weeks or the Super Bowl spots did that.

I've already made a thread on this but really?

"In 1954 we awakened something"
Coincidentally this is when the first Godzilla movie was released.
Okay. Sounds good.

a few seconds later...

"There were nuclear tests in the Pacific."
This is referring to Trinity (Fat Man, Little Boy, and a third code-name for a nuke that I do not recall). These tests were conducted on July 16, 1945. Let me repeat that. 1945 NOT 1954.

Now now wait a second. So they're saying they awakened Godzilla (1954) and the nuclear "test" (1945) were an attempt to kill it? Heck they even got the island in which the Manhattan Project (1942 to 1946) occurred.
But really now. How is a test situated a whole DECADE BEFORE Godzilla's awakening have to do with the bombing projects?

According to the original movie...
"Before being mutated by the nuclear fallout of atomic bomb tests performed on an island called Rongerik, which is close to Lagos Island, the island where Godzilla lived, Godzilla was a Godzillasaurus that had somehow survived the extinction of the dinosaurs in the late Cretaceous era."

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaFeb-26-2014 9:29 PM

@M4inchan

Exactly where are you getting the idea that these were the 1945, tests?

Operation Castle Bravo tested 6 dry fuel Hydrogen Bombs in 1954 in the Pacific Ocean. They're most likely referring to those tests.

Also the original movie does not state anywhere that fallout from an atomic bomb mutated Godzilla from Rongerik Island. The Godzillasaurus theory wasn't brought into the Godzilla series until 1991 when Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah was released.

In the original film, Godzilla is not a Godzillasaurus mutated from the atomic bomb. He's simply some long dormant, perhaps evolved, aquatic/land animal that has survived and been awoken by the bomb.

Honestly, if you really are a Godzilla fan than you should definitely be excited for this movie, especially compared to that 1998 film that Emmerich and Delvin wrote (Godzilla killed by fighter jet rockets...really?!?!). I mean I'm glad they were trying to be creative and different but geez give Godzilla some of his old school attributes. Anyway, enough about that movie, let's talk about why we should be excited about this movie considering the new official trailer and plot lines we know about so far...

1. The technology and graphics of todays films alone are gonna make this an amazing, edge of your seat kinda movie with vast battle grounds, major destruction, oh and some awesome sound effects as well

2. They doing Godzilla justice by going with a more original look (from what we can see so far, which isn't much, but who cares that only builds suspense and I am all for that) and a more original Godzilla in that it seems like he's gonna be pretty much unstoppable and an anit-hero, which are good in the sense of a Godzilla you can look forward to.

3. He's obviously gonna be facing other monsters, which whether they bring back some old school ones or new school ones, who cares because that just means he's gonna be good ole Godzilla...whoopin' ass and "saving the day" in a general sense of the word while still destroying pretty much everything.

4. They are actually putting a story line into this and developing the characters on top of all the other stuff listed above, which only means that the movie will have more backround and will be more interesting probably than almost all Godzilla movies because you'll get attached to the characters and it will only build up the plot and Godzilla himself even more. Plus, look at the cast of actors and actresses they got for this, for a Godzilla movie that is a solid cast!

5. It's a Godzilla movie...and like I said, if you're a true fan, need I say more?!?!

Hey Guys,

i think everyone who is not reacting like "him" is not a true fan.. ;-)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS_Qw_h3ffw

just kidding... but i would like to see if we can make "him" go viral... his reaction to the trailer is just the strangest and funniest thing i have ever seen, regarding to reaction of trailers.

Maybe if he gets viral and if there will be a sequel, he will be allowed to play a little part in the next movie as a little backround actor :-)
I think he can really call himself a "true fan!", and i would be really glad for him. :D

anyway, have fun watching it.. it is really worth it..

Regards from Germany..

launch date for this movie here, is 15.05.2014 btw ;-)
