This is the full video of '1984', the commercial released by Apple on 22nd January 1984, during the Third Quarter of Super Bowl XVIII. Apple 1984 Super Bowl Commercial Introducing Macintosh Computer Plot The commercial opens with a dystopic, industrial setting in blue and gray tones, showing a line of people (of ambiguous gender) marching in unison through a long tunnel monitored by a string of telescreens. This is in sharp contrast to the full-color shots of the nameless runner (Anya Major). She looks like an Olympic track and field athlete, as she is carrying a large brass-headed hammer and is wearing an athletic “uniform” (bright orange athletic shorts, running shoes, a white tank top with a cubist picture of Apple’s Macintosh computer, a white sweat band on her left wrist, and a red one on her right). CommercialSlideshow For those confused, it is based on George Orwells book 1984, in which society is controlled by Big Brother and is being watched/heard night and day. On top of this, they are fuelled with hatred for the past and other societies other than their own. As she is chased by four police officers (presumably agents of the Thought Police) wearing black uniforms, protected by riot gear, helmets with visors covering their faces, and armed with large night sticks, she races towards a large screen with the image of a Big Brother-like figure (David Graham, also seen on the telescreens earlier) giving a speech: My friends, each of you is a single cell in the great body of the State. And today, that great body has purged itself of parasites. We have triumphed over the unprincipled dissemination of facts. The thugs and wreckers have been cast out. And the poisonous weeds of disinformation have been consigned to the dustbin of history. Let each and every cell rejoice! For today we celebrate the first, glorious anniversary of the Information Purification Directive! We have created, for the first time in all history, a garden of pure ideology. Where each worker may bloom secure from the pests purveying contradictory truths. Our Unification of Thoughts is more powerful a weapon than any fleet or army on earth. We are one people, with one will, one resolve, one cause. Our enemies shall talk themselves to death and we will bury them with their own confusion. We shall prevail! The runner, now close to the screen, hurls the hammer towards it, right at the moment Big Brother announces, “we shall prevail!” In a flurry of light and smoke, the screen is destroyed, shocking the people watching the screen. The commercial concludes with a portentous voiceover, accompanied by scrolling black text (in Apple’s early signature “Garamond” font); the hazy, whitish-blue aftermath of the cataclysmic event serves as the background. It reads: On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you’ll see why 1984 won’t be like “1984. The screen fades to black as the voiceover ends, and the rainbow Apple logo appears. TY Montesco! My God I love that ad, it's juts gorgeous. Here is a have a Video of Ridley Scott talking about the project. My best friends older brother had a Mackintosh and I remember how cool it was, it even had a speech function (a few words) and I was just blown away. :D Here-->Making of Apple's "1984" Commercial - with Ridley Scott

I don't believe I knew that Ridley did any of these famous commercials, back then. As it just wasn't common-knowledge; although, I certainly remember seeing several of them. As neat as the Mac appeared to be at the time, I don't believe it was much use for most to begin with (aside for word-processing/simple paint, etc). I think if one was interested in also having a variety of games; an ATARI PC or Commodore 64 would have been a more sensible choice, overall. Also, to admit to just anyone (if > 12 & < 20) that you had, & used one of these early home computers, wasn't thought of as a cool thing. It would've been the equivalent of preempting all cable-channels to announce you were "The Lord of the Nerds", LOL. In general, people were still far from embracing hi-tech gadgets; that would eventually become the everyday home/personal appliances, of today. Most feared that it would turn them into a pocket-protecting social-reject, or be thought of as one. It was far more socially acceptable to go the public arcades (some seedy, nor safe). As with playing video-games at home, was something usually regarded as only suitable, for young children. And the young-adult Mac admirers, or owners of "1984", needed to stay in the closet, LOL (in America). Yes, those additional U.K. Barclays Bank commercials should be listed; at the very least, for completance sake. I removed "Scandal: The Warrior (1984)" upon reviewing it. And as it didn't actually fit the "1984" theme, + I'm glad, because I always hated that song. I did like the STYX song a lot at the time, was fun to roller-skate to that one. And the mask reminded me of the ones used on a "Doctor Who" episode called "Robots of Death" (1977). The "Earth, WInd & Fire" video listed above is interesting, in case some have missed it, @ 1st.-glance. Great! Interesting Svanya and Sawa!, but do not forget those differents ads on the style of Blade Runner that Ridley made to Barclays Bank in the 80s with futuristic cities, were 3, Query, Queue and Stracey. Cool.I like how his ads have a common thread. The guy on the big screen in The Apple ad sorta reminds me of Tyrel ;)

My favourite ever advert! Ah the first Macintosh, a nine inch screen, floppy disc drive & 128k of RAM!! Isn’t it interesting that the Mac & Barclay’s ads are so awesome and futuristic? Especially given that Ridley has always maintained that he never had that much interest in Sci-fi pre Alien. Thank the God of Biomechanics that he ended up on the futuristic pathway!!

Svanya, I think there is a Motorola TV add also similar as Mac released in 1984. But I'm not sure, do you know something?

One of my favorite games ever, Half-Life2, even made homage to that ad when releasing the game on Mac! :D Half-Life 2 "Free Yourself" Mac OS X Trailer (HD)

Thanks Svanya ^_^...I didn't know of this trailer, & wouldn't have as I don't play the games on the PC or consoles. I think my favorites games, were the ATARI STAR WARS, & the Bally Midway DISCS OF TRON. Also, the SEGA Cyber Troopers Virtual-On, much later. A more recent one that I enjoyed was the Bandai Namco Gundam Pod, but is presently found only in Japan. I have always liked the Arcades more, & went quite often, especially when a teenager. Although, I usually ended-up gravitating to the games that had semi-enclosed cabinets (all listed above had that option). I hated getting slightly molested :P :O :P by strangers with my back to them while playing the non-enclosed ones (particularly when it was crowded). This was interesting, & falls into the "1984" theme here: #1. Polybius -- The Mind-Destroying Arcade Game I certainly was a big-fan of the vector-graphics arcade games, but never heard of that one. S:)

@Sawa; Hahaha! Polybius is legendary, I have that as an avatar on Steam. It's so cool you brought it up. :P Polybius is a supposed arcade game featured in an Internet urban legend. According to the story, the Tempest-style game was released to the public in 1981, and caused its players to go insane, causing them to suffer from intense stress, horrific nightmares, and even suicidal tendencies. A short time after its release, it supposedly disappeared without a trace. Not much evidence for the existence of such a game has ever been discovered. LOL, love the photo Svanya. =D I wouldn't be surprised at all, if there was some truth to this Polybius tale. I remember playing ATARI Vindicators II (arcade) with some guy that I didn't know well, but was always on the machine. Anyway, he was playing it several hours a day, all-week. And we got to trying to get as far as one could on it together, even scheduled times to meet on it. While we were playing it (into the 2nd-week) ...he freaked-out, & was shaking like an ALIEN was gonna pop-outta him. His hands were locked on the controls, & I couldn't knock them-off. I even thought he was being electrocuted, but he then flung himself onto the floor, & was violently flopping-around (like Kane in "ALIEN"). Someone else there recognized what was happening, & started to force something into his mouth, so he didn't choke. Shortly afterwards, the Paramedics came-in, & took-over. The ATARI game gave him an epileptic-seizure. I saw him on the street a few weeks later, just in passing. I asked him about what happened ...he explained he wasn't to play any video-games, ever again. I let him know that I did finish the replacement version of the game (plain Vindicators), with one of his friends (under $100 between us ...in about 6-hours). And I never saw him again after that chance meeting. That's the only-time I witnessed something very outlandish, caused directly by a video-game. It was a surreal, & shocking experience; especially, in getting to know what an epileptic-seizure entailed. They did haul that game away, within a few days of the incident (was unplugged immediately though). It was replaced with the first/prior version of the game. A true-story, from 1989. S:)
