Very cool :) I'm on vacation with my iPad. It keeps crashing when I try to zoom in on your post. Looks like a good read. Have to wait until I get home :)

Yes, Prince was fast outta-the-gate, with incorporating BR into his growing musical empire. And the idea of it being, that the Vanity 6 women, were his musical marionettes/androids/replicants. I did at the time like "1999", & "Purple Rain". Particularly, the concept of "The Revolution"; a female guitarist, also a multiracial/cultural group. "Purple Rain" (1984) cinematographer Donald E. Thorin, did a fine job at emulating Jordan Cronenweth's style. There is even a woman dressed like Pris (minus blackout-eyes), in the film. Although, Prince became too outlandish for my own tastes, afterwards (& he disbanded "The Revolution").

It's interesting to catch-up, & see what became of Vanity, plus her replacement Apollonia (1st. hired to replace Vanity the film "Purple Rain"). Vanity certainly was a woman that knew no shame. And the Canadian Apesploitation film "Tanya's Island" (1980) is testament enough to that.  In hindsight, Apollonia fared far better.

The Vanity 6 (3 Noses) photograph (above) embeds another 80s fad, when Japanese flavored items became fashionable in the West. For example: Kamikaze Shirts that had sleeves that would zip off like a t-shirt length or like a muscle shirt. Japanese earrings or clothing w/ Japanese characters on them (even guitar straps, etc). I think that it may have come about from many Western pop/rock-stars touring Japan (which by that time had become incredibly common), And with them wearing some items they picked-up (either souvenirs, or given as gifts) in promotional photographs (setting this trend). This trend started pre-BR, so it's also possible Ridley was aware of it, too (along with Japan's skyrocketing presence in the American marketplace). It may have been done to also imply that they may/should be popular in the next-biggest music-market after America (or "Big in Japan").

In some way, this type of promotional photography did work in the artist's favor, with music lovers that enjoyed Western music. That's if it was intentional, to begin with... once the fad was rolling, it likely was. It could be easily viewed as a 'tip-of-the-hat" to potential (or already) Japanese fans. ;) I've noticed with many Western "Heavy Metal" (70s/80s-era) artists, they would usually mention their Japanese tours (either in magazines, or in autobiographic form ...always a "Japan" chapter). And almost everytime attest to having the wildest sex-orgies of their lives, with overzealous fans (groupies), specialty hookers, & AV stars. Conquering women in "The Land of the Rising Sun"; largely in-part, due to their dominating on-stage performances (also exotic Western looks).

Nice post Sawa. Looking at 3 Noses band photo really reminds me of the 80's. Makes me want to buy a Li'l Red Corvette when I get back and change my name to the universal symbol used on hand air dryers in public bathrooms(sometimes mistaken for "receive bacon") Boy I wish I could copy and paste right now ;) Just like Prince,I'd like to replace my name with a symbol...this one ;)

lady_kaga_panf.jpg They've got him turning-up, turning-down, turning-in, turning-round, turnin'...

And you read it here 1st... the premiere celeb-replicant (outside the film) was an Canadian (pleasure model, eh), from Niagara Falls, Ontario (christened by Prince). Also one other (speculated) candidate, that it's Nastassja Kinski (German); although, only if the inspiration for her 1981 snake-shoot can be linked to insider (BR) info (it cannot be presently). So as it stands, it's Vanity (+ her group members).

And the Lady Kaga promotion is to do with the Kaga City (hospitality project) hotsprings; similar to purifying one's self in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. ;)

Thanks djrees56, + you're welcome, fishkettlesnakesss.
