For those who were depressed by PR's box office take in the US during its opening weekend... http://movies.yahoo.com/news/pacific-rim-1-internationally-over-weekend-012501066.html
EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has bragging rights today for distributing the Legendary Pictures 3D scifi actioner around the world after co-financing it. I’ve learned the studio discovered this morning that last weekend’s results came in $500K higher than forecast on Sunday. The result is that Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim grossed $35.3M with 4.7M admissions from 9,610 screens in 50 territories. That was just enough to knock off Universal’s 3D toon Despicable Me 2 and become the #1 film internationally over the weekend now that all the numbers are in. This brings the expensive $180M-$220M budget pic’s international ***e to $110.9M and its worldwide total to $178.5M. Unfortunately, U.S. theatrical sales are not expected to exceed $100M all in so overseas coin is crucial. Foreign territories for Pacific Rim opening last weekend included France, Germany, Hong Kong, and Holland. The movie already has debuted in major markets Russia, Korea, Mexico, UK, Australia, and Italy. Upcoming releases include July 31st for China, Spain, Japan, and August 9th for Brazil.
That's good news. Let's hope it does really well for the rest of this month.

I'm noticing a pattern. I see this with a lot of movies that defy the current film zeitgeist of "dark brooding angsty Dark Knight ripoff": they have mediocre performance domestically and go on to gross millions internationally. Is it just me or are international audiences less cynical than American ones? Or perhaps word of mouth is more efficient in other countries. In any case, this is good news. Gives more impetus to making a sequel.

hope it keeps doing steadily well for a few weeks... the movie deserves it. And we fans deserve a sequel / prequel XD

I don't think American audiences are particularly cynical. There is a reason that family fare like 'Despicable Me 2' , a pretty solid animated flick, makes big money at the American box office. Appealing, somewhat funny to adults, morally uncomplicated tales. Pacific Rim isn't to far from that. Even Adam Sandler's turd dropped by 1/2 over the last week so its quickly wearing out its welcome. Pacific Rim's problem was simply one note advertising that appealed to its base audience without trying to expand it really. And a glut of big money action movies, like those white house thrillers, tends to make the public choose where it spends its money. Just bad timing really.
