MemberNoobJul-17-2013 7:31 AMI like it alot. Its probably one of the most realistic sci-fi movies. Maybe not the whole monolith thing and the europa thing. but in general its pretty spot on.
Another aspect that I like is the mystery of the film.

MemberNoobJul-18-2013 4:56 PMI believe it is an important film, overall. I know many actual Sci-Fi fans find it frustrating to understand. Although, Kubrick didn't want the general audience to understand, just simply take in the experience of it (dubbed "The Ultimate Trip"). And some find it intimating, for the same reason. The most common reason I've heard with those who dislike it ...too slow, & very boring. I believe if one isn't taken with the technical achievements of the film, this is quite a valid criticism, too.
Kubrick was certainly making a similar (or interconnected) statement with nearly each film he made; possibly partly based on privileged knowledge (for the times). Something that could've given someone the key to start decoding it, wasn't finished or used. Also why the film is quite confusing, particularly in the end (if one wanted to know the meaning behind the visuals, why HAL killed the crew etc). Kubrick most definitely was a master at putting his own spin, on nearly anything (& why the novelization, also sequels should be ignored when attempting deconstruction).
