Kaiju Blue
MemberNoobMay-16-2013 4:32 PMI don't know much about Pacific Rim as is the case with most of us.
Wheteher this franchise will be succesful will depend upon the motive of the Kaiju, simply stating they came from a crevice deep in the ocean is not going to cut it. If screenwriters Travis Beacham and Neil Cross can tackle the conceptual aspects of the Alien invasion e.g. motive, the movie will be decent. If not, or if the motive is too basic for example Earth's resources, this movie will be equivalent to Battleship.... BAD

I don't expect BSG level writing, neither should anyone else. Monsters, robots, gigantic explosions; That's whats on the table, and that's what I'm plunking $13 down at the box office for this summer. It would be cool for the monsters to have some motive or master that wants to conquer the world, but it doesn't need it, not now. That's sequel territory, and for the comic book.

MemberNoobMay-16-2013 9:09 PMKhakihat is right. This is a monster movie and complex motivations aren't really needed. Godzilla was a freak atom bomb mutation that proceeded to level Japan until killed. Its an appeal to the kid in you to watch giant monsters stomping cities.
That said I think they are building this up into some sort of directed alien invasion, with the Kaiju being the alien equivalent of jaegers sent to soften up humanity. More should be revealed in the sequel.
