Take a minute to imagine if the engineers had actually brought the black goo to Earth instead of messing up and dying. Could you imagine the how the world would have combated most people decomposing like Holloway or the engineer in the beginning of Prometheus? For an added dimension, do you think the world would find a way to destroy an infestation of xenomorphs in this age?

I have read that the effects are similar to the ebola virus which we have difficulty battling today. Imagine what would have happened 2000 years ago. If the virus were in the world's drinking water, the effects could be devastating. Think of the black plague, it is believed as many as 2/3's of the European population died as a result of that disease. As to a xenomorph attack, 2000 years ago we had spears, swords, bows and arrows and catapults for high tech weaponry. The colonial marines with 23rd century weapons didn't fare too well against xenos, so I don't think our 1st century ancestors would have stood much of a chance. You must also remember the world's population at that time was in the hundreds of millions not billions, so it would have been easier for the xenos to win. In today's world I believe we have adequate weapons and the shear numbers to beat a straight xeno attack, but if combined with the decomposing virus at the same time we would be fortunate to survive as a species.

After thinking about this I suddenly have a vision of 300 Spartans taking on an army of Xeno’s. If there is one thing mankind has proven over time is that it has the resilience to overcome extremely difficult odds to survive. I think there would be some hope for the human race.

nope we'd be screwed in fact ebolas only saving grace is that the infected get so ill in such an unmistakeable way that they dont travel far, whereas if there was a latent infection period it'd be a nightmare! whereas here if A it was widely dispersed in water and carried further by the unwittingly infected and infectious and B gives rise to pretty much unstoppable monstrus parasites!...............

You forget that we have an immune system and by saying that the later generations would have adapted and evolved to where it cant survive until it mutates into a new strain. Evolution is the key to survival with any disease or infection.

The Anunnaki were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, mighty men of high reno

Last stands and immunity sound good but will they be enough to overcome the black goo. Remember it doesn't only mutate humans it even mutates the simplest organisms (the worms for example) so you would potentially have all sorts of nasty creatures to contend with plus having to worry about whether your insides were going to turn to mush. The stuff of nightmares if you think about it.

When i posted this i though that humans 2000 years ago had a pretty small chance to survive against black goo/xenos, but was sure the census would show humans surviving nowadays vs. an infestation of sorts. As malex234 pointed out, everything(i assume everything because what can withstand this infection? soon enough to survive?) would be affected an possibly attacking each other.but as malex originally said the sheer numbers of humans, now i realize animals and plants count in that too, would make it a very long process at least. i do think in the end there might be some life left on the planet not mutated or dead, but it would be a grim outlook indeed

thats an interesting point every organism will mutate! then either kill or have violent horrible face sex with the other horrible mutants.... the recombining, mutating, eliminating of species would lead to an ever shortening list of new and violent animals till the last monster sub-species standing runs out of prey/hosts and has to go dormant hmmh what does that sound like?

@ caenor: Oh the humanity indeed! You absolutely and graphically got the full implications of my little theory. I must admit I had really only considered the impact to humans, but if you're right, the goo is a planet killer. I suppose the engineers then can clean up the mess and reseed if they want too. @ cuponator. Totally agree, if Ridley decides to show us this scenario either as a flashback or perhaps as an outbreak in paradise it will be one of the scariest things ever filmed.
