Well, with Prometheus out of the way my new most anticipated film is Darren Aronofsky's Noah. It's a long time off with a projected release date of March 2014 but this is the film in the works that I'm most excited about. Been watching ð (Pi) over and over again lately and the film is just magnificent. Aronofsky has done a few of my favorite films with definitely Pi and The Fountain. I could maybe add Black Swan to the list but those 2 are definitely 2 of my favorite films. While Pi and Black Swan both recieved the attention and credit they deserved upon release(Pi deserved a lot more imo) I think The Fountain was over a lot of people's heads. In fact, when I was walking out of the theatre one of the few times I went to see the film I overheard 2 ladies commenting on the way out. One said "Where we supposed to be able to understand that?" and the other replied "I didn't." With the box office totals it seems this feeling was widespread and talked about altough I never did pay any attention to reviews of the film. From my recollection of what I did see it didn't get good reviews. I think the film is one of those that will grow to become something people pay attention to more and more over time. Especially as Aronofsky's brilliance and stature as one of the best directors ever becomes more aparent over time. Anyone else dig Aronofsky's work? Hate it? Excited about Noah?

One thing that REALLY bugs me is the fact that Fassbender couldn't do it. I really get sad when I think about what could have been even though I haven't seen what will be.

The Fountain was... emotionally empty for me...

The Fountain was similar to Prometheus for me! Lots of high/elevated ideas that were hamstrung by poor characterization and plot holes!

Pi was cool, specially regarding the name of Jheovah and the need to obtain that 200+ letter/number name. A bit dull sometimes, but cool in a way.

The Fountain had great moments and cool aesthetics. But sometimes felt too emotion state seeking. As if Aronofsky was demanding that you felt peety or sorrow for the characters. I don't enjoy that. Either I feel something for them or I don't. And in this case I didn't.

Emotion in a film cannot be forcibly taken from the audience, but must come naturally through the use of proper storytelling techniques...

Patch: True. There are some characters in some stories you like or hate and they don't even need to have a line of saying.

Opinions on The Fountain are very polarized on this site. The other few times I've seen it mentioned brought out mostly backers of the film. I would love to have some examples of what some of you considered plot holes in The Fountain. As far as being forced to feel a certain way in the film, I didn't. It was a very emotional film and I think I felt exactly the way Aronofsky intended and now that you mention it I could see how some would feel that way about it. Perhaps part of my love for the film stems from the emotional state I was in when I watched it. I was having a hard time with many things, a woman only being one of them. I was very on edge emotionally. The film hit all the right notes as far as that goes. Clint Mansell's score is one of my all time favorite pieces of music. If it doesn't evoke the emotion it tries to I don't know what will. Just as I enjoyed that you guys brought to light for me the fact that you felt forced to feel something emotionally I would really LOVE to know what you considered plot holes in the film. Pi is just amazing to me on so many levels. I hate math. Hate it. Not to say that I'm not good at it but I HATE it. That said, I love the film. I love the idea that there are patterns everywhere in life. I love the idea that the stock market is a natural organisim which, if you really think about it, it is. I love the characters. Max Cohen is just a great character Sean Gullette's performance is superb. Even better though is Mark Margolis as his mentor Sol Robeson. I just love his performance. I could get into more detail but I doubt anyone cares enough to read it. If someone really wants to get into the ideas and themes of the film I'd be happy to and would enjoy someone else's view.
