fundamental sense of self-hatred

In an interview two days ago from Movies.com, Damon says: “...I have come to understand it because when you live that intimately inside of a movie, it is very easy to go to a place of all the things you wish it was and all the things it could have been. All of this mixed with my fundamental sense of self-hatred and a very real - this is not an act I put on - and a very real sense that I will be discovered as a fraud and in fact have been called out as such on numerous times over my career. That is one of the things that drives me and I don't want to lose that part of me, but it also does take away from my ability to enjoy these things just as movies.” I don't know exactly what to think about this. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and to believe that he is not just saying this as ‘hot air’ (and to even admire him for this raw honesty), but it also strikes me personally as someone who does NOT carry around any self-hatred that this might have some expression in the actual STORY of Prometheus. Would it be easy to keep a personal sense of self-hatred out of one's work as at least SOME kind of influence? I haven't seen the film yet (and don't like spoilers), but "self-hatred" and a sense of "being discovered as a fraud" seem like a really big deal to me. I'm not starting this discussion as an invitation to personally BASH this man as an individual. I don't like that, fundamentally. I dislike the final episode and the "resolution" of LOST as much as anyone else who is not a fan of that "solution", but that's no reason to get personal and nasty about it. I find it rather amazing that he would say this publicly about himself and I'm curious about how it might have impacted Prometheus for good or bad. NO STORY/PLOT SPOILERS ALLOWED, though PLEASE, in your responses. Thx.!

Honestly, I feel very bad for him getting attacked by people who did not like the movie. No one should be abused like that, no one. I'd give him a hug if he here beside me right now, because sometimes that is all a person needs. Just to feel loved. I guess I am just a dorky woman huh. :/

Never give anyone, especially in Hollywood, the benefit of the doubt. He knows his professional history and he accepts it because he may not know any other way. It sounds as if he may view himself as being just your average schlub who's in over his head.

Xenotron, What do you mean by “Never give anyone, especially in Hollywood, the benefit of the doubt.”? Everyone who's ever worked in that industry (please clarify "Hollywood" (specifically SoCal/LA, USA??)) is not trustworthy? I'm asking this as a question. It's not loaded.

Well that confirms the guy is a lose cannon..... He also in another TV Interview said that he would rather be a part of Ridleys first adventure into Sci Fi for other 30 years and the movie becomes a flop because of his involvement than not play no part in the movie at all. And that when he is dead and burried on his grave stone he can have that he played a part in this movie no matter how the movie does... To me thats not what you want in a writter, sorry but the guy has good ideas and then Ridley should have used them and got someone else to help take those ideas and flesh them out. Than to allow Lindelof so much creative input....

Well, after you've seen the movie you can decide for yourself if he is a fraud or not. Personally I wouldn't trust that man to fetch coffee for me after seeing what he did to Prometheus. He's been given plenty of chances to prove himself and he has blown them all. He's not untalented by any means. He's a very creative man. But the media that he would work best in would be comic books, not film or TV.

@takka_... That's interesting. So he's out of his depth because he's out of the optimal element for him?

As i said the guy has some great ideas... If you let him jot down on a A4 page some ideas, they would be good.. But then if you allow him to then transfer them to a like 5 page script thats when some problems seem to happen... To be fair the movie did not have as much LOST as i worried about.... Main gripes was some scenes was rushed could had been done for longer and more depth.... So there was some unanswered questions i dont think thats a problem... It was more to do with the silly plot holes here and there that i never agreed with, mainly the concept of the agenda Weyland and David had in regards to finding out Shaw is carrying a Organism, to her then going off and removing it and then no one seems to care or wonder what happened, as if it was just a dream by Shaw.... I felt the Janek and Vickers flirt scene was a bit too cheesy for their Characters.... mainly Vickers answer. i guess we can put some of these down to Lindelofs Lost style of writting.

with all honesty, I can imagine all the Hate-Mails the dude gets. I wouldn't even be surprised if he gets death threats. There is a pretty nasty post about "hanging Sir Ridley Scott" in this same Forum. So, you can easily imagine how much hatred LOST fans may have for the guy, simply because they are morons without any kind of good sense whatsoever. IMHO, Lindelof is trying to apologise him self.

no offense, but he IS a fraud...he writes stories with no ends...he full well knows the viewer will be expecting a satisfying end, and he full well knows HE DOES NOT HAVE ONE, OR THE TALENT TO WRITE ONE if that is not fraud I dont know what is....What do you call Lost? It was fraud...Prometheus? Fraud....I would personally lock him up in jail

David, Do you think he feels the Prometheus is "not good" or "not good enough"? Neither you nor I have seen it at this point, but he's speaking AFTER the premier and a couple of days of showing in Europe... Do you think he's actively responding to criticism from pro reviewers and fans? To ALL who have seen the film, Can you tell me if the film seemed "self-hating" in and of itself; without giving examples of spoilers?? Maybe I started this discussion a few days too early? I wonder if the Engineers exhibit anything that could be taken as "self hate"? NO SPOILERS PLEASE!

Okay, well I guess we have the answer we needed... Lindelof is obviously a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

sukkal, here is what I believe: Lindelof is aware that he was invited to be a part of the Alien Universe [though not Alien, but still Alien-ish] and that many fans were waiting for something that he himself found [the hater way] he could not satiate. And now he is trying to excuse him-self in front of the peeps he may disapoint.

@John D. — So concise and eloquent. :•D LOL! @David 1 — OK. I get that. I cannot disagree that it seems very much in the realm of possibility.

@sukkal this was originally posted in your Discussion my apologies. After writing my thesis paper, I decided to post my first discussion, since it started focusing on Ridely and his issues with reining his writers. Again I am sorry and it will not happen again.

@patch — It's not a problem. I just was not sure if people would understand the background context or not. That's why I referenced this discussion in yours. Congrats on finishing your thesis.
