One thing that I love about the new generation of films, wondercon and ridley scotts new film is that the new sets will probably live on in museums of be looked after. they will be apreciated for years to come. but and its a big but!! Sir ridley has built some of the most awe inspiring structures ever put to celluloid. and here is how history treated them. some set designers wept 1. the original space jockey was put on display at Graumans theatre with the release of the film. a religious group, believing it was the work of the devil set it on fire 2. the original derelict ship was starting to stink so bad from rotten cow bones they burnt the sets 3. the mobius/cobb space suits were burnt 4. the nostromo ship was left out in the parking lot for 25years where rain rodents and age nearly destroyed it, and now it is an extensive restoration project for the propstore 5. the same thing happened to the spinner from blade runner, left in the parking lot, now in a museum thankfully 6. the Tyrell building caught fire from the enormous heat from the bulb inside 7. the blade runner hero blaster was discovered in some ones garage 25 years after it was believed lost forever my point is, ridley is the best and todays items are tomorrows antiques I wished when I was younger that I could have gotten to see some of these preserved but ridleys film sets have had some of the worst abuse I've seen for such iconic items incidentally if you want to watch the six restoration vids for alien here they are Nostromo restoration 1... Nostromo restoration 2... Nostromo restoration 3... Nostromo restoration 4... Nostromo restoration final... Alien suit restoration...

interesting point...seems like all ridley scott's structures have to unfortunally end up in fire.
Have you heard of phoenix asteroids? They glow in every color of the rainbow...they travel endlessly through space...

That's the nice thing about CGI, I guess.

CGI BLOWS...TAKES THE GUESS WORK OUT OF "HOW DID THEY DO THAT?" NOW A DAYS NOT MUCH ON THE SCREEN AMAZES US "BENDING UNITS" CAUSE WE KNOW IT'S DONE WITH CGI. LIKE JOHN LANDIS ONCE SAID, "JUST CAUSE WE CAN MAKE FIFTY WEREWOLVES RUN ACROSS THE SCREEN WITH CGI, DOESN'T MEAN WE HAVE TO."

A Long long time ago I almost made a thread entitled The exact same thing, I wanted to specifically state that the Roger Waters Version on the Live Concert DVD "In The Flesh" makes the Ummagumma version sound very very very very very bad!!! It's just FLAT OUT the very best remake OR COVER of any rock song I have EVER heard. This Parallels the OP because IMO both RS and Roger waters have had their art completely misinterpreted and terribly treated after the fact.

hi Spatacus: yeah the Ummagumma live recording is aweful. Nevertheless I like its momentum. And Ummagummas' A Saucerful of Secrets is [IMHO] their best version of it [for the sake of the organ building momentum as well]

Bender, i have to agree, not only that I gotta say something else right now before I make a spectacle of all this by creating a post for it..I just saw The Avengers and seriously people THIS FILM SUCKED ...I MEAN IT SUCKED SO BAD I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT ANYONE LIKED THIS FILM AT ALL...AS FAR AS ARTISTIC INTEGRITY GOES, THAT FILM IS MAYBE, MAYBE A 40 OUT OF 100 and there were long long long stretches of film where absolutely nothing is happening...and i do mean absolutely nothing...the CGI was even CRAP...and the only thing that was good in it were the fighting scenes which as mentioned account for about 40% of it. Downey Jr. completely Phones it in, and is no different at all then he was in iron man or Iron man 2, in fact the story in Iron man was way way better than this one. And he is the best part of this film. He has the best lines, actually wait, sorry the best part of this film, was the 2 second appearance By "HDS" !!! That was the best thing in this film, that 2 seconds and the reference to "Alien"! After all the Hype and the Buzz of people who actually had seen this film, it only made me realize how so few people can recognize what is or what makes a truly good film.

David 1 I loved your post respect your opinion and I Love you for bringin up Floyd and think some of their music belongs in this film. Montreal Put Pink Floyd On The Map this much is a certainty...I Love "STCFTHOTS", AND "SFOS" the whole thing, but I also think you might wanna listed to "Free Fore" on Meddle and am interested how you think that stacks up to it because I think that song is the best recording they ever made next to Waters's version of Heart Of The Sun . At their 1976 show as the Pig Flew into Montreal... it blew up, and the show had to be stopped during it's intro as we all sat in Olympic Stadium while the band radio'd NYC and 5 Hours later a Back Up Pig Flew Into the Stadium and one the most legendary concerts in the History of Music finally began!!! It was revealed not long after that in his hotel suite at the Olympic Village, that night, Roger Waters and David Gilmore wrote the Wall !!! The entire thing..on Napkins!

@David1, yea I did, but I liked the first battle between Iron man and Thor's Brother, that was wicked. The Movie though was just really really bad. And I mean right from the get go the CGI was crap. @fishkettlebanana yea, and ya know, ANIMALS is one heck of an album, one HECK of an album which I still listen to religiously!!!

I always remember live at pompeii but here was something that blew me away, most bands have lots of amplifiers to make the sound louder, these guys had loads of amplifiers, one for each instrument for more clarity

you're a smart fellow to have noticed that and yea, they are "Special". I think Dark Side Of The Moon is still on the Billboards Top 200 albums chart, close to 40 years now after it's initial release.

Spartacus: Animals is my fav album [I have them all actually. I'm a big Floyd fan]. And you're right about the Pig. eheh. Did you know THE WALL was supposed to be a Roger Waters only thing? That and The Final Cut one. fishkettlebanana: yeah, that I believe is the "quadraphonic sound system" they used to play with. Man, the Pompei Concert was wicked as Hell. No one there to see it.

@David 1 yes, but Gilmore was in the room with him while they did it, and Yes it was mostly Waters anyways in the end, but if you check you will see that The Trial and some of the others were mostly written that same nite with most of the input coming from Gilmore, I believe I read somewhere that Waters wanted to release it himself and cut out those songs but in the end he did not.

Certain music groups created a kind magic that defies reason, both in capturing the times they were in and the sear genius in their composition. Pink changed my life, that and the Moody Blues. God I miss these groups. I would like to thank fishkettlebanana for this great thread.

Each generation must find it's roots, but I think technology is pushing our human condition too fast and too far. We have yet to become truly wise and patient. Is our desire for more tech poisoning our path as a species?

Disagree about "The Avengers," I thought it was quite funny... although i guess that's not what everyone wanted from the movie. Not really being a huge fan of the comic book series, I was fine with it. The best acting job in the film is probably from the actress playing Black Widow (her name escapes me at the moment). Everyone else did ok to varying degrees, but it's certainly not what I would call a movie full of deep thoughts or great dialogue. It definitely feels like a comic book. But as I said, since I expected nothing more than that, I found it highly entertaining. The problem with the CGI in "Avengers" is the same as in 75 percent of all movies with CGI animation... it still looks like animation. 100% agree with the statements here about Floyd, for the most part. With regards to "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun..." the In the Flesh version is good, but Roger did a VERY cool version on the 1984/5 Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking tour - very similar to the ItF verison, but even weirder and spookier, with a really intense saxophone solo (the ItF version's strength is in the guitar solo, imo). Not sure where you can find the Pros and Cons tour verrsion it but I know there's an "unauthorized recording" (cough cough) of it floating around out there. I was at the 1985 show in NYC and I still have the funky concert shirt with the Reg/Rog dog on it. :P

It hurts so bad I cannot tell you, I was busy at the time and could not go. In the end I have also never heard THAT version of the song "Set The Controls" and I know of it, we just not get that version of the album here in Montreal and I still have never heard it. Can you hook me up somehow ???? At the time I was lying ON a beach at Lake Louise where the two big Mountains Cris Cross in Jasper, B.C. Canada reading the book "LEGION" by William Peter Blatty which later became the film the Exorcist 3. Whenever I read anything about "Amphortis" and the song "Go Fishing My Boy" would come on my "walkman", tears would come streaming down my face. Just thinking about those days brings tears to it now ! Thanks man. seriously...Thanks!

@Sparty - Let me see if I can track something down audio or video wise for it... in the meantime there are a few clips on Youtube from the tour - here's one of "The Gunner's Dream" from the '84 leg of the tour (it starts with the very tail end of "Hey You" and then goes into "Gunner's Dream." Quality of the video isn't very good but the sound isn't bad... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gA9SBDjZMY I think "Set the Controls" from this same videotape is on Youtube too, but I can't vouch for the quality. "Pros and Cons" was a pretty good show, the backdrop films and images were all classic Floyd (you could tell Scarfe did the artwork for the Pros and Cons films, too)... but friends of mine who also saw the Radio K.A.O.S. tour (I didn't get to see it) said that was actually a better tour, or so I've heard.
