George Miller Biography/Filmography
The high-energy Australian director and co-creator of the "Mad Max" trilogy of films was a young medical intern, well on his way to a medical career, when his life changed abruptly. In the final year of his studies at the University of New South Wales Medical Facility, Miller and his twin brother entered a one-minute film in a student competition and won first prize- a course at a film workshop in Melbourne. There, he met his future filmmaking partner, Byron Kennedy.
Miller and Kennedy collaborated on the 14-minute short "Violence in the Cinema- Part One," a satire on media violence. It won two Australian Film Institute awards. Miller returned to medicine while raising the money to finance his first feature film "Mad Max" (1979). Released in 1982 to worldwide acclaim, "The Road Warrior" was voted Best Foreign Film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and made more than 20 lists of the 10 best films of the year. As a result, Miller was invited by Steven Spielberg to direct the "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" episode of "Twilight Zone the Movie." Miller has received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay for "Lorenzo's Oil," Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for "Babe."
