It was announced yesterday at the San Diego Comic Con that a new series is in development that will explore the mythology of the Stargate universe. The ten episode show will feature Catherine Langford, portrayed by Viveca Lindfors in the 1994 movie, as the central character and be directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan. Kevin Conroy, president of MGM's digital and new platforms had this to say about the show...
"We've been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure. We view Stargate Origins as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with Stargate Origins."
Stargate Origins is being used by MGM to launch the Stargate Command streaming service which becomes available this autumn and will reportedly offer the fan base a wealth of information, news, and content, both old and new. Details on this new service will be announced in the coming weeks, but we here at Scified expect an online hub where fans can watch the 1994 movie as well as episodes old and new along with news, reviews, and discussion - Imagine a fan focused forum news site combined with a VOD service. Should this mixture prove successful TV fans can expect similar services will inevitably be released, likely for Star Trek, Supernatural, CW's DC Universe and the MCU, among others. Speaking about the service MGM's president of worldwide television distribution and acquisitions' Chris Ottinger commented...
"We saw a need for a definitive hub for the Stargate fan base to continue to enjoy news and content, both old and new. Stargate Command will open a new door for the community to celebrate and interact with all content in a way that has never been done before.
