Sony Pictures 'Venom' movie gets a surprise 2018 release date!

That's right, in a surprise move, it has been revealed that Sony will release their Spider-Man spin-off Venom movie next year! Over a year ago, back in March of 2016 we reported that the Venom movie had finally entered production but since then, very little word was spoken of the project. On Thursday, Sony announced Venom will hit theaters October 5th, 2018!

Currently the film lacks a director and cast but the script, recently tuned by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, is complete. THR reports that Sony are looking to create a franchise with Venom, meaning a series dedicated to the Symbiotic anti-hero.

The Venom movie will not be related to Spider-Man: Homecoming, either.

Hard to really get excited since there's been talk of a Venom movie since Spiderman 3 and none of them have worked out.

Just to clarify, we don't know for certain at this point whether or not this will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony have the rights to make Spider-Man films set within the MCU, so it could directly tie into the events of Homecoming

It's also been widely reported that Sony are considering selling their film division because the vast majority of their films have underperformed at the box office as of late, so making a Venom movie could be a last ditch attempt to launch a profitable franchise.

We also have the standalone animated Spider-Man film set to be released on 21 December 2018.

Thanks David! Yes, it is likely this is a last ditch effort to save the sinking ship which is Sony's film division. However, if they pursue a similar style as Deadpool and Logan and give Venom the R-rated treatment, paired with a screenplay and casting which matches the comics, I don't see why Venom would not be a profitable blockbuster. That being said I would be happy if Marvel took over the Venom project and tied it in with their expansive MCU.
