Rumor: Star Wars spin off featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi in development?

Rumor: Star Wars spin off featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi in development?
Star WarsComments

According to THR, the British director of Billy Elliot and The Hours, Stephen Daldry is in talks with Lucasfilm to direct the eagerly awaited Star Wars Story movie focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi. British actor Ewan McGregor, who portrayed the character in the Star Wars prequel trilogy had previously met with Lucasfilm, possibly about the role of which he is keen to reprise, but was unable (likely contractually prohibited, aka non-disclosure agreement) to elaborate on the topic of discussion at said meeting (see video below).

Together these two snippets of news suggest that Lucasfilm may indeed be developing an Obi Wan movie, with McGregor attached to star, and likely to feature Luke Skywalker as a child in a supporting role.

The above video confirms McGregor's involvement in the project (at least in principle), while Lucasfilm's meeting with Daldry, a director whom frequently works with children, suggests a sizeable role for a child actor. Unfortunately, THR's article that broke the news does not follow an official announcement from Lucasfilm, but instead cites unnamed sources, of which also claim that no script has been written and that no cast is attached. Thus Daldry's attachment to the project cannot be confirmed.

Because this news has not come directly from Lucasfilm, but instead from unnamed sources we see this as an indication rather than confirmation as to what may be happening behind the scenes for the hotly anticipated Obi-Wan movie. We suspect this news was likely sourced from Daldry's representative CAA.

One reason we are being cautious with this news is that the article that broke it also claims that Lucasfilm is considering movies featuring Yoda and Boba Fett. Star Wars fans will know that a Yoda movie has not yet been confirmed and that the Boba Fett movie is looking likely to become a movie about bounty hunters in general after Lucasfilm had to put the Boba Fett movie on indefinite hold following Josh Trank's dramatic split from the recent Fantastic Four movie which saw the director removed from the project. Another reason we are being cautious about this news is best shown from the following quote from the article...

"In the original Star Wars trilogy, Kenobi is a desert-dwelling and war-weary hermit who later proves to be a wise and powerful warrior, brandishing a lightsaber. He is briefly a mentor to a young Luke Skywalker before being cut down by Darth Vader, his former pupil. Alec Guinness' portrayal of Kenobi garnered him an Oscar nomination."

Even the casual Star Wars fan knows that Obi-Wan Kenobi was a Jedi Knight and Master (and former General) whose student was Anakin Skywalker, not Darth Vader. This quote reads like it was written by someone who has only seen the first movie, with the article as a whole reading like someone who hasn't been following the news on this movie.

So until this is confirmed by Lucasfilm, consider this as little more than rumor.

Making a movie about someone who was a key part in 4 of the 7 episode movies and we know pretty much from start to finish. Shine on Disney.

Maybe in 10 years after they scrape the barrel with OT characters we can finally branch out and see something new.

Granted if this is true Obi Wan in the most interesting character they are choosing to do a stand alone, but we see him in all his interesting moments don't really care about what he did on Tatooine for 19 years.
