We all knew that it wasn’t gonna be quite as big as The Force Awakens, but Rogue One is already on its way to being a huge financial hit. Within just four days of release, it’s already grossed an incredible $323,476,831 worldwide, and will likely surpass $1 billion by early January.
Made on a production budget of $200 million, with an extra $200 million or so going towards marketing, Rogue One will probably need to hit over $500 million to truly break even, a feat which it is well on its way to accomplishing and then some.
$172,676,831 of its current haul came form the US, where it played in a very wide 4157 screens. This makes it the 11th highest domestic release of 2016. Expect to see it come much closer to the no.1 spot in the coming weeks. Another $150 million came from oversees, a number that will also expand significantly as it opens in more territories. It’s doing particularly well in the UK, where it opened with £17.31 million, making it the largest debut on the year in the territory.
It should also be noted that Rogue One has yet to open in China, where it will undoubtably do huge business. Although Star Wars was a relatively unknown property in the country, Disney gave The Force Awakens a huge marketing push over there, resulting in it earning a gigantic $124,159,138 in the country. Add to that the fact that the film stars two hugely bankable Chinese stars in the form of Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen, and you can expect it to skyrocket past $100 million when it gets released in their on the 6th of January.
The Japanese opening was on December 16, and whilst figures aren't in yet, The Force Awakens earned $97,862,640 over there, a gross of $100 million or more is looking likely.
Let's end this article by comparing the overall figures of The Force Awakens to how Rogue One is currently performing. TAS opened to an incredible $119 million across the US on its opening day, and ended its domestic run with $936,662,225, the highest of all time. It also had an international opening of $281 million and ended with $1,131,561,399, which equated to a total worldwide gross of $2,068,223,624. We can already see from its early figures that Rogue One won't hit these heights, it’s still definitely going to soar past $1 billion.
