This weekend the popular British Science Fiction TV show Doctor Who returned for its thirty-sixth season. The tenth season since the franchise's reboot in 2005, the twelve-part series will also be the third and final series for the twelfth Doctor; Peter Capaldi, who took over from the previous incarnation of the time-travelling Doctor Matt Smith (Terminator Genisys) in 2013's Christmas Special episode "The Time Of The Doctor". This new season will also be the final season for Head Writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat, who has been involved with the series since its revival in 2005. Moffat is best known for writing the shows darker episodes such as "The Empty Child" and "Silence in the Library", and is credited with the creation of the revivals most terrifying new foe, the Weeping Angels, first introduced in the season three episode "Blink".
For this new season, Capaldi's Doctor is reunited with Nardole, portrayed brilliantly by British comedian Matt Lucas while being joined by new companion Bill Potts. Portrayed by British actress Pearl Mackie, Bill is the show's first openly homosexual companion.
This weekend's episode "The Pilot" saw Bill meet love interest Heather, who soon afterward was taken by a moving body of water of alien origin. The episode features some visual effects reminiscent of the James Cameron movies The Abyss and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
The season will continue to air for the next eleven weeks on the BBC and, as shown in the trailer above, and will feature misadventures in locations such as Victorian England and Mars, and will see the return of the Dalek's, Cybermen and the Ice Warriors. Of particular interest to fans of the series is the return of Scottish actress Michelle Gomez as Missy and John Simm as the Master, reprising his role from the 2009-2010 two parter episode"the End of Time", in which he starred alongside fan favorite David Tennant.
Speculation suggests that Simm will return before regenerating into Gomez's iteration of the character. The season is also rumored to be Pearl Mackie's only season as the Doctors companion, with the show getting a new, as-of-yet uncast Doctor and companion, with Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall taking over as the shows new showrunner.
