The Starship Troopers reboot is finally making some progress! District 9 and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp has been tapped to direct the new Starship Troopers movie according to a fresh report by The Hollywood Reporter. The new film will not be a remake of the 1997 original, but will instead reboot the franchise as a whole, starting over and using the 1959 Starship Troopers novel as reference instead.
Published in 1959, Troopers ostensibly told of an interstellar war between Earth and a host of bug-like aliens, and focused on a rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. But the story had other things on its minds, like exploring the strengths of life in a military society and such ideas as having to perform service in order to have voting rights.
A relaunch of the Starship Troopers franchise has been in the works since 2016 but since that initial announcement, it had been radio silence on a fronts. Now we have a director, but casting updates and release date information have yet to be revealed.
While Neill Blomkamp didn't get to explore his vision for an Alien 5, he will now get a chance to try his hand at another iconic sci-fi cult classic. Are you excited to see Blomkamp's take on Starship Troopers? Let us know in the comments!
