Yesterday, FUNimation announced its acquisition of Godzilla Resurgence, known as Shin-Gojira (Shin-Godzilla) in Japan. Today, SciFi Japan followed up on their exclusive with FUNimation's official press release:
"In an additional note, Toho — despite promoting the new Godzilla at last year’s American Film Market and elsewhere as GODZILLA RESURGENCE — has insisted that Funimation use the English title SHIN GODZILLA (a direct translation of the film’s Japanese name)."
It's unknown why Toho is keeping the Resurgence title for locations outside of Japan with the exception of America, but fans speculate it has something to do with separating the film from Legendary's series or even the recent Independence Day: Resurgence, which has been a less than favorable release.
Shin Godzilla will be released through FUNimation's theatrical division, FUNimation films, late 2016.
