Most exhilarating Hollywood treatment of the monster-vs-mecha genre, ever. I totally loved the post-apocalyptic (actually, ante-apocalyptic) brushed-metal feel of the human resistance bases and gear. Even before the title sequence, Del Toro had managed to switch viewers seamlessly into suspension-of-disbelief mode and the next 2 hours of crunching metal transported the old-otaku-fogie in me decades back to the days of Ultraman and Mospeada, except with stunning live-action visuals. (Bay has so much to learn.) This is one of the rare times I half-regretted not catching a 3D screening. Del Toro also packs in a strong set of human characters, especially with the young Japanese girl segment, but could have done better with the adult casting. The international casting of Jaeger/pilots is pretty fun though, especially the triplet-core tri-armed Crimson Typhoon & Cossack-headgeared ChernoAlpha!
