I saw this movie for the first time when I was 11 years old. Little did I know the mind-blowing experience that would shape my destiny. This film is one you must see. First, let’ talk about the acting. It is great. We have an all-star cast. Sam Neil and Laura Dern do a great job portraying Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler. I truly believe this is how paleontologists would react if they saw live dinosaurs. And, Alan going from the reluctant protector whose heart eventually softens is a great bit of character development. Richard Attenborough’s portrayal of John Hammond is great, charming and flamboyant. He is very goal oriented but he can break your heart and make you root for him when he realizes his mistakes. Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richard’s performance as Tim and Lex Murphy is pretty good, playing children whose wonder turns to horror. Wayne Knight as Dennis Nedry is comical, being the catalyst that starts the conflict but is very funny to watch. But, the cast member that I remember most fondly was Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm. Every time he was on screen, I enjoyed his performance. His rock star Chaotician delivers smarm and snark, but also lightens the tone of the film by delivering most of the movie’s comedic lines. Everyone else does a decent job. So, the acting is great. Now, there are 3 things I want to talk about before I get to the script. First off are the effects. Simply put, PHENOMINAL! This is the best CGI I’ve ever seen in a film. The dinosaur models are full of detail and look like they are really there. And, they blend together with Stan Winston’s animatronics flawlessly. I genuinely felt like I was watching real dinosaurs. Points for the effects. The 2nd thing is the musical score by John Williams. This is one of my favorite film scores out there. It can be both somber and triumphant. And, it totally sets the stage for each scene. My two favorite scenes in the film are when we first arrive on the island and when we first see the Brachiosaurus. Whenever I hear the JP theme, I feel like a kid again. The 3rd thing is the suspense. This movie had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. To cite an example, let’s look at the scene where the T-rex breaks out of its enclosure. It’s at night, in the rain, creating a spooky atmosphere. It’s appearance is built up by the vibrating water glass, goat leg on the car, claw on the fence, head eating the goat and fences being pulled away. It hesitates to attack at first, keeping you scared. And, it’s shot inside the car, giving you the perspective of the kids and making you feel what they’re feeling and making you feel like you are there. I was terrified watching this scene. And now, we come to the final bit: the script. It’s obviously based on the Michael Crichton book of the same name. Yes, there are differences, but, the movie’s overall theme about messing with nature is a good one. â€Jurassic Park†dabbles in themes of science’s reach exceeding its grasp and that just because you can do something, that doesn’t mean you should do it. These are very real issues going on in our world today and this film captures it. And, it also explains the Chaos Theory and uses it as an allegory to how unpredictable the park is. Overall, a well written script. Jurassic Park has earned it’s way to being one of my favorite movies. It’s a shining example of how movies can bring the imagination to life. It got me fascinated with dinosaurs. If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out. You won’t regret it.
