If I had to describe Planet of the Monsters in one sentence, I'd say it was like an extended pilot for a television show. Considering that the trilogy was meant to be a show, that doesn't strike me as all that surprising.
Much like a television show though, I feel that they're going many plot threads that'll carry through the rest of the films, meaning that this first movie ends up feeling somewhat incomplete. That's not to say that this first movie doesn't make a case for itself to exist.
Two main characters, Haruo and Metphies, particularly stand out as characters that have a lot of potential for development. Metphies I'm especially interested in since his intentions seems a bit more broad than just destroying Godzilla, even if those are his intentions at all since he seems fascinated in the monsters' context to his own religion.
The animation style was fine, I had no problem with it in particular. The character and monster styles were pleasing for the most part.
The pacing was fairly slow at the beginning with a lot of technical jargon, but it was a mad sprint to the finish in the final half-hour. It makes the film feel uneven, but at only 89 minutes, it could've been worse.
In the end, it's impossible to fairly judge the movie because it's the first part to a three-part story. You can criticize the fact that this film really does need sequels to stand, but I can't lie I enjoyed the first "episode" of this new chapter in Godzilla.
