Review Godzilla film review by Carl Majors

I thought the movie was every bit as visually impressive as I hoped, and that is of course the second most important part. The first would be maintaining the spirit of what Godzilla is supposed to be, which I think it did as well. My only real misgiving is not enough Brian Cranston and Ken Watanabe, and maybe too much of the Ford Brody character. (Spoiler Alert) Killing off Cranston was a shock, and perhaps a mistake...but probably the only notable one. The fight scenes were very good, but I wanted even more.
After the surprising success of Pacific Rim, and the still-too-fresh memory of the Emrich disaster (one of my all-time most hated movies (violated all Godzilla rules; why do you think Robot Chicken makes fun of it over a decade later?) this movie had to deliver, and I think it did. It's hard these days to make a movie that is reliant on special effects and still makes people go "whoa!" and this movie did that a couple times. Probably should have seen the IMAX version though--that's a recommendation. And yes, there is a nice setup at the end for a potential sequel, and one has to think that is likely at this point.
