first off, I've been waiting 10 years for a new film, so i will try to keep this legit and not fan crazy. Gareth Edwards' Godzilla was a story driven and visually stunning movie that had a back story similar to the original Gojira. What most people don't know is that Gojira is a serious movie that was a metaphor for the nuclear age. The new plot had a similar threat as nuclear energy being "bad".
Story: I believe the story was very original, and if anyone can come up with a movie with a similar plot all i can say is Godzilla pulled it off. with all the trailers that came out i still was surprised by the story so many things i did not know about the characters and the story of the monsters. but at this day and age can we really be critical on what the story is of a movie? most of everything has been done. Its whether the picture can tell the story the best way in its own context.
Cinematography: overall the film looked phenomenal starting with 1954 footage of Godzilla that made you believe there was something there. here was beautiful transitions through major scenes throughout the movie as well that matched the next scene, stuff like that. the visual effects were amazing the best I've seen in a while, altho there were some areas that could have needed work, dust, water.
directing/ talent: a lot of people would disagree with me but i thought all actors did an amazing job making you thing there were giant monsters, some people may say that Bryan Cranston made the movie, BUT, if we look an Arron and Elli they had great chemistry with one another. and Watanabe played an excellent character from the original Gojira altho he had the name Serizawa he played more of a Kyohei Yamane-hakase who was the character that did not want to kill Godzilla but study him. the characters defiantly helped bring realism into the movie. the vision of Gareth Edwards shows in this movie, we see how people try to live with everything going wrong around them, and i believe it pays off.
The Monsters: Godzilla was a magnificent sight, altho i would have changed somethings like his feet ant the position of the base of the tail, he looked great. as for his personality, he was defiantly just an animal hunting his prey and humans are just in the way. This anti hero attitude comes from the 90-04 Godzillas where humans would attack him but he still saved the day. The MUTOs were majestic creatures and this film showed them to be just animals trying to live their lives rather than a creature that wants to destroy the human race. and that brought some realism to it, unlike Pacific Rim. overall the were a great villain addition to the Godzilla franchise.
overall I believe its a great installment, Legendary has solidified this new look of our king which is now the true American Godzilla. as a fan of the franchise it surpassed all expectations, and as a film grad it was made very well and a lot of tough was put into it. And Hoping for a sequel!
