I had high hopes for this movie. I've been a Godzilla fan since I was eight (about 10 years now). Despite my hopes, I had no idea of what exactly what to expect. The experience of finding out what the movie had in store was exhilerating. Quite honestly I was floored.
To start the actual review section of this review, I will say that this Godzilla is unlike any other movie I've ever seen before. The tone was so dark and serious, but it was always grounded in the whole, "That could happen," feel. The characters were interesting, but didn't go as far as they could have when it comes to carrying the story. I felt that Cranston's character, Joe, could have had a lot more to add to the plot, but they killed him. I was, however, satisifed with the irony of how he died. Ford wasn't a particularly strong character, but he held the plot together. Watanabe's Serizawa was great, but there wasn't enough of him.
I liked the pacing. All of the monster reveals were absolutely spectacular. I got chills when Godzilla first let out his roar in the airport. And the MUTO's were no less spectacular. They were a worthy addition to the Godzilla monster roster. Their fights with Godzilla were jaw dropping. I do wish there were more of them, but I'm happpy with what was presented. That brings me to my favorite part of the whole film: Godzilla's atomic ray. It was a true sight to behold. It was the perfect combination of everything that the weapon has ever been in the last 60 years. Plus, the firing down the throat followed by a decapitation of a MUTO left me with my jaw hanging wide open.
Overall, it was good movie. It wasn't perfect. There are bits where there could have been more. However, it's positives far outweigh the negatives. I'd see it again in a heartbeat. I also look forward to the sequal possibilities. The King has returned.
