Godzilla 2014= Gamera:Guardian of the Universe. Through most of the movie it almost felt as if the mutos had taken the place of Gyaos and Godzilla Gamera. The evil Gyaos/Mutos arise and threaten to breed and destroy the world which awakens Gamera/Godzilla who is our only hope. The ones who believe in Gamera/Godzilla can't convince the military he's not the enemy and attack him, still Gamera/Godzilla saves the day and triumphantly walks away. Now the comparisons are just but I will say that enough was different that it didnt feel like a ripoff. Just my observations.
Anyways for the movie itself it was a great film though the reviews claiming that the human characters werent that interesting was fairly spot on but they didnt really detract from the huge picture. They moved the story along and I didn't find myself bored to tears with them like the pro reviews had made them out to be.
As for Godzilla. I do think the restrained approach worked and every minute he was on screen was incredible. The grand finishing moves he put on the mutos garnered quite a gleeful response from the entire audience. Now his nature in this film . . .Well, the teaser trailers really made this movie feel so much darker than it was and Godzilla never quite felt like a true force of destruction. Edwards has said Godzilla is an anti hero but the truth is he is blatantly made to be heroic, sympathized with and rooted for. The end even spells it out for us in writing "Our savior?" Godzilla feels . . .well, like Gamera. He destroys the mutos because it's his job. Thats what it feels like anyways, that Godzilla is a supernatural creature made by the earth to restore balance. In the end I quite enjoyed this Godzilla but my favorite incarnations will always be the darker, more vicious versions.
Aside from that I really couldn't get into the music and the scope of the events felt too narrow. Giant monsters are attacking the world but the response doesnt feel all that huge and characters don't seem too surprised to be dealing with them.
