This is a really fun movie. It's pretty good, HOWEVER it's not perfect and has a few big problems.
When I read reviews and they all said, there's not a lot of Godzilla I didn't really care as being a fan would let you know that almost every Godzilla movie doesn't show Godzilla that much. With that being said it's not that Godzilla didn't show up, it's that it got teased so many times that is the problem. The first time he gets revealed, and you finally see him it immediately follows with a news broadcast that shows cuts of the fight. They do this again at the end. He sees the winged muto, then it immediately goes to what the people are doing. I don't have a problem with Godzilla not showing up, I have a problem with it building up and then copping out.
Of course when the final fight did happen it was very good. 1 of the best fights of the series and reminded me of Godzilla Raids Again which is personally my favorite fight scene. It was very enjoyable watching the final fight and the crowd at my theater cheered as he killed the female muto.
The characters are okay. Bryan Cranston knocks it out of the park, BUT I think every line of dialogue he says shows up in trailers. I think that was pretty crappy for advertising, that I know everything he says then he dies. Every one else does okay and I didn't particularly find Aaron-Taylor Johnson's performance that bad. It's by no means Emmy worthy, but I didn't cringe watching it.
The story is good. There are a few slow parts that would have been better filled watching the fights Godzilla had off camera. I liked the film. I probably need to go watch it again later on in the week after this sinks in and I can pay more attention instead of just fanboying over finally watching the movie. It's an enjoyable movie and anyone who's a fan of the series definitely needs to watch it. I went with a friend who isn't a fan of the series that very much enjoyed the movie so I think this movie has enough merits to go see it even if you haven't liked any other movies.
