“Godzilla”

Godzilla. He is a popular icon in fiction, even to this day. Back in November 3, 1954, the very first Godzilla movie was released in Japan as “Gojira”. It told the story of a giant prehistoric dinosaur that awoke from its slumber due to a nuclear test. Because of this, the titular Gojira has gained supernatural powers, such as regeneration, an atomic breath and nigh-invulnerability. This “Gojira” intrigued the American audiences and two years later, they released it in American cinemas as “Godzilla, King of the Monsters”. Thus starts Godzilla’s legacy. Fast forward 60 years later, Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” is unleashed upon our world. Let’s start this review, shall we?

Story

Basically, the story is about an ancient creature has awakened from deep underground. This monster would be later named as the M.U.T.O.(Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) Knowing the military cannot stop this monster with conventional weaponry, Dr. Serizawa proposes that the only way to destroy the M.U.T.O.s is by relying on “Gojira”. After a couple of gunshots, numerous buildings destroyed and the death of billions of people, Godzilla has emerged victorious. Seems like a basic Godzilla flick, right? Well, crammed into the middle of it is compelling human drama, frightful revelations and lots of terror. Overall, the story is 5/5.

Acting

Bryan Cranston. That’s all. Kidding aside, the human characters really convince us that the fear is REAL. So much fear on their eyes. This is not your usual monster flick. It’s a TERRIFYING movie about a gigantic, irradiated god-dinosaur annihilating everything in sight. I give this a solid 4/5.

Visual Effects

CGI? This makes our favourite big, atomic lizard look like a GOD. While other people say he looks too fat, or he’s feet are ugly, I say whatever. He looks HUGE, and since I watched it in IMAX, he looks like a friggin’ MOUNTAIN! The M.U.T.O.s aren’t half bad either. They look amazing too. I ABSOLUTELY love the CGI in this film. Well, Jim Rygiel is the Special Effects Supervisor of this film, so its instant GOLD. I give this section a 6/5! Oops, I mean a 5/5.

Music and Sound Effects

Decided to combine these two sections. The sound effects… The sound effects! *ahem*… The sound effects are top-notch. Godzilla’s roar sounds so… powerful. I actually flinched when I heard the Big G roar! The M.U.T.O.s roar sounds remarkable too. All the sound effects are great as well, they provide a great mood to the scenes. The music is definitely getting awards. If not the film, at least the music! The music fits so right in each and every scene in the film! I give this section a 5/5!

Overall

Overall, I only have one thing to say. This is the TRUE American Godzilla. Watch it. Whether you are a Godzilla fan or not, you have to watch this. This is the movie of the summer. Hail to the King, baby!

Hail to the King, baby!
