As of this writing it's 64 days until Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but I started rewatching the series in preparation around day 80. I figured I wanted to buffer the days I rewatch the series since I travel often for work.

Unfortunately I didn't get to tweet out my thoughts for King Kong vs. Godzilla, but Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again and Mothra vs. Godzilla hit the hashtags. I'll place those thoughts here too as I continue to rewatch this great series.

Onward.

About 90 days and 33 movies. Some I'll watch even if my living room is on fire, (Monster Zero!) others I'll walk the dog while it plays on my TV. (SpaceGodzilla...) Round 1. Let's go! #GodzillaRewatch

I swear, like Citizen Kane, #Godzilla '54 is that rare movie where I spot something new every time I watch it. Seen it over 100 times and never noticed Ogata hiding back there during the second Diet summon. I always wondered where he was and thought it odd he wasn't there.

"Godzilla was baptized in the fires of the H-Bomb and survived. Right now our priority should be to study its incredible powers of survival." Had they, would they have found a way to combat the harmful effects of radioactivity? Such an amazing, overlooked line.

"Godzilla continues to advance on the Tokyo-Yokohama coast." Hm. Near the same area GMK's final battle took place.

#GodzillaRewatch takeaways day 1.

1) If you can't be a man and adjust your tie like Dr. Yamane, don't bother wearing one.

2) When listing the film's tragedies add, "losing last hope to survive effects of radioactivity".

3) There really will never be a better #Godzilla film.

My original plans were rained out tonight, so Plan B! #GodzillaRewatch Round 2!

When the inferior sequel corrects a major, factual error from the original film.

"You sure it wasn't... 2 million years ago?"

I guess if I were a fugitive that wasn't going to make it I'd take down a whole city with me too.

I really do think the #Godzilla vs. #Anguirus battle is one of the best in the series. Very animalistic, tooth & claw battle. Too bad it's over after the second act. #WhatNow?

He liked bombing mountains so much that 10 years later he'd retire on a planet behind Jupiter just to bomb the Earth while offering #Godzilla and #Rodan a job.

He got some snazzy sunglasses too.

#GodzillaRewatch takeaways day 2:

1) If you can't be a man and peek through your glasses like Dr. Yamane, get contacts.

2) Escaped convicts WILL take whole cities down w/ them if cornered.

3) Make sure you have an actual 3rd act, not 2 pages of ice exploding padded to 12 min.

Wow. A rare night of tranquillity for the spring. Let's shatter the silence with #GodzillaRewatch #4!

Man, right off the bat Tsuburaya's miniatures in #Mothra vs. #Godzilla are some of the best. I'm not sure we'd see miniatures this detailed again until the Millennium Series--Maybe 1984, but they went downhill when Kawakita took over.

It's not just the detail, but composition. I love how Tsuburaya frames things from low angles, lined with tree branches, street lights, etc.

"Best shot ever. I want to replicate it. Everyone get in homage-mode!" - Tezuka on the set of #Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, probably...

This cast is so stellar. Before the trio in Shin #Godzilla you had these rockstars.

"My hoes!"

"Where did that monkey go?"

So interesting. Even though he's speaking to people from a nation of bomb victims, he doesn't distinguish between any outsiders. Honda positions everyone to be punished by #Godzilla for playing with the "devil's fire." We're in this together, yo.

Yuriko Hoshi's speech on #Mothra's island and her pained, exasperated reaction after the fact.

That is all...

This fight doesn't get enough credit. The suitmation - the puppetry - the stop motion - the optical effects - all combined make an excellent, fierce battle sequence. Great example of using all the tools in your box.

Ifukube: This scene doesn't need any music.

Honda: I'll tell YOU what it needs!

I always felt the rescuing the children subplot was really tacked on. At least the characters do something other than sit on a rooftop and watch the fight. *cough*

Tacked on subplot worth it for this cool shot.

Goodbye forever 1962 #Godzilla. NECA does you proud. I promise.

#GodzillaRewatch takeaways day 4:
1) Kenji Sahara loves evil capitalism more than Makoto Otake hates nature.

2) Bringing Yuriko Hoshi back to life WILL ignite world peace.

3) Paper beats rock and baby worms beat prehistoric death machine.

I never got the philosophy of “all humanity including Japan, the victims, are responsible for the atomic bomb.” Can you explain it to me? I tried asking someone who had this philosophy what their reasoning was but he got angry at me and only vaguely told me “cause we allowed it to get to this point”. I really am not trying to be offensive asking this question, I just genuinely want to understand.

Titan of Water,
From the perspective of the natives of Infant Island in the film, they simply don't differentiate between nationalities. They likely don't know of our history and because Japan has betrayed them twice they simply see them as no different from anyone else. It's a fairly simplistic viewpoint, but one that's interesting to ponder: If we were to look at the human race from the outside without lines of nations to separate us, (like the Infant Islanders) would we consider everyone responsible for each others sins and punishments?

In context outside of the movie, Godzilla has long been considered a victim of war and hubris that includes more specific sins from Japan as well. I go into greater detail about this in my article for GMK, here: Before Shin Godzilla - Retrospect of the Last Era, Part 3: Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah

Doing it. #GodzillaRewatch Day 5! Buckle up! This is a relevant one.

When you realize one was originally going to play Dr. Hayashida in Godzilla '84, but the other one did instead.

The woman is still the most gorgeous thing in the Godzilla series.

Also, hello same volcano Rodan "died" in.

"No, I'm not a liar."

The Godzilla series--Always ripping into the Japanese government.

"How are the two Mothras?"

We're never told how the other died, but I've read some crazy stuff explaining WHY she did.

Also, the fact the Shobijin are visiting seems to indicate relations w/ Infant Island have warmed.

She says Rodan will be "resurrected", implying one of them survived from the original movie.

Not sure why Sekizawa wrote in this sci-fi work around to explain how Salno survived the plane explosion. Just say she jumped into the ocean. Easy enough to buy.

"I've lost to a monkey and two worms. I need a win here..."

Marry me.

This time the Shobijin do the rescuing.

Same great suit from the last film. No lip wobble. What is it with stars and plastic surgery?

I love how this movie is essentially a Godzilla vs. Rodan flick with a BvS twist. (Though done better.) Toho didn't bother being redundant and decided they had enough setup to bring them all together to fight a new enemy.

On live television. With her assassins out in the open.

Her amount of mental energy is staggering.

This is the first time Tokyo Tower bites it in the Godzilla series, but the 2nd time it goes down in continuity. Mothra trashed it 3 years prior in her movie.

Thanks King Ghidorah! I wouldn't bother rebuilding it at this point.

I dig the idea that the survivors of Venus sought refuge on Earth and Salno is a sort of direct descendant.

Conclusion: Venusians are hot.

Women are from Venus, indeed.

If there's no monster conference in the new movie, Legendary has failed us.

Balls out.

So this does NOT feel tacked on. A fitting conclusion to the movie's crime arc that was established from the start. And King Ghidorah spares no one as his collateral damage kills Malmess. Everything weaves together so well.

Class reunion this May!
#GodzillaRewatch takeaways day 5:

1) Venusians are hot.

2) Tokyo Tower insurance rates must be a real bird.

3) When needing a monster conference translated, bring Peanuts.

How many times have the Tokyo Tower been demolished in the Godzilla series? I haven't kept count on that.

Godzillatheking123,
Four times: Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. and Godzilla: Final Wars.

We don't actually see it get destroyed in Final Wars though, we just see it barely standing.

Oddly, it never appeared in the Heisei series.

After a surprise 12+ hour work day, I'm in. #GodzillaRewatch Day 6 is my favorite Godzilla film! Bring on the stinkin' rats!

I like this opening more. The Monster Zero March is God-Tier.

Glenn's Japanese voice actor, Goro Naya, also dubbed over Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Basically I'm saying Glenn is Obi-Wan.

The real reason this movie works so well: The cast is easily my favorite of the Godzilla series. Takarada, Adams, Mizuno, Tsuchiya (as the series' BEST villain) and the criminally underrated (in this flick) Kubo.

Powerhouses.

Love the framing of this shot with the elevator shaft. Seeing this cropped on VHS really neutered it when I was younger. I couldn't figure what it was despite the context clues.

The Forbidden Planet influences are strong. Some of the most extravagant sets seen in the Godzilla series up to this point. I love the extremely pulp sci-fi look and how Glenn & Fuji pop from it in their orange suits.

A neat little moment absent in the American version is how the Commandant of Planet X turns off the universal translator and we hear their native language.

It explains how Glenn/Fuji can understand them without exposition.

This is a great little scene. All the distinct personalities bouncing off of each other is brilliant. I love the way Glenn sabotages his best friend's argument.

Admittedly, this is where the story falls apart. Why did they need to deceive Earth if they knew where Godzilla was all along? I assume they needed us to confirm he was down there (due to prior scenes) but that's a bit flimsy.

Seamless, Tsuburaya. Great shot.

This prop would be used again in Godzilla vs. Hedorah. Gosh, I wonder for which scene?

Although he's playing them, the Commandant's words are believed. This indicates Godzilla & Rodan are still considered threats, not heroes. The anti-hero label soldiers on.

Takarada's too cool to look at your pulp sci-fi inspired set.

Tsuburaya won a Technical Award (basically the equivalent of a Japanese Academy Award) for his FX in this film. They aren't realistic and that's the point. He created a colorful, fanciful comic book-y world. A real first for Godzilla. It set the stage for much more in the genre.

Godzilla & Rodan fighting King Ghidorah on another planet after traveling through space.

That sentence alone should bring world peace.

It used to bug me that the People of Planet X gave them a regular ole tape for the "miracle cure", but I kinda like the symbolic imagery it has with the Cold War--Secret tapes, microfilm, etc.

Best scene in the movie. Fight me.

I love how Godzilla seems to mindlessly wipe his chin in a subdued state.

And there it is. Coming full circle the rape whistle is finally blown on those essentially trying to violate the Earth.

While I don't particularly think this Godzilla suit is very flattering in the next movie, I've always had a great fondness for it here. Severely underrated design.

A neat thing Tsuburaya did in this movie was create larger scale miniatures for a larger Godzilla foot prop to crush. The size & detail means we can literally see stuff come out of these houses as Godzilla kicks'em around.

Despite the unfortunate use of stock footage from Rodan this is really some of the most exciting city destruction in the series. Ifukube doesn't hurt it either.

These trucks would later be used to create the Maser Tanks in War of the Gargantuas.

Can we appreciate how much Godzilla has improved against King Ghidorah since the last movie? He boxes KG's heads, he dodges the gravity beams--At point-blank range... This ending battle is short, but satisfyingly dynamic.

I always wanted to see THAT movie. Guess my 20 year old fan fiction will have to suffice.

#GodzillaRewatch takeaways Day 6:

1) Don't ever let aliens think you're THAT interested in them. Wear sunglasses on their impressive ship.

2) It's okay to have a massive plot hole as long as the rest of your movie is so good it distracts from it.

3) Nick Adams > Chuck Norris.

Wish I could learn more about Ishiro Honda’s personal philosophy and beliefs. He’s a very interesting man. Any sources about that?
