...first time poster. Have followed this site since the pre-Prometheus days. I may have said a word or two on a topic but that's about it. I rarely post on any forums, even though I read them regularly. Recently rewatched Aliens then went to the Scott prequels. First time I saw Alien was in the early 80s, was a fan since. I'm not sure why I'm posting now. I guess, having rewatched the prequels, I just don't feel let down like it seems most fans have. I don't think they're perfect but I like the tone and the depression of Prometheus and Covenant. I've also come to like Aliens less and less, which I know has been mentioned by others before. I still like it...but the hive, insect thing irks me in the way the prequels irk most of the fans. Maybe I like that David looks just like David Bowie on the cover of Station to Station...or just the overall ferocity of the "primal" neo-proto-what haves yous. Are some parts silly? Sure, but I like the grand scheme of the whole story. The only thing that I can conclude is that I must be some kind of moron, since I like these prequels, even though the consensus is they suck or that Scott is no good. I must be missing something. ///

Welcome to Scified.

You are entitled to like and dislike whatever aspects of whatever franchise you wish to, although this is often forgotten by some forum members, no matter the website. Having been an avid forum goer for over 10 years now I have seen my fair share of ego-centric and self-opinionated a-holes that like nothing more than to impose their views and opinions upon others. Sadly such individuals will hide behind the faceless anonymity that the internet affords them to push such attitudes, be it grammar nazis, SJW's, canon-philes, brown nosers, naysayers, trolls, or just your typical A-grade a-holes.

With over a decades experience with such unsavoury characters I find it best to ignore them, thus starving them of the attention and/or praise they desire, even though it can be entertaining from time to time to challenge their arrogance, though this only works if you know unequivocally that they are wrong about whatever it is they are preaching. Just so long as we always remember to argue the topic, not the individual.

Nope. I also like the prequels and consider Prometheus as one of my favourite movies, even though I would change some things.

Welcome see. David certainly looks like David Bowie in Prometheus.

Leeta. Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are easily some of my favorite movies too (along with Signs, Clear and Present Danger, both Blade Runner films).

see Well, I 'll be a naysayer right here... There is not a consensus that these movies suck. Judging by the public grades on the various review sites, we can only tell that the prequels are less loved by the original 2 movies and more then 3 and 4. That's all you can say..

If you like them both good for you, I only like Prometheus and the First part of the original from the franchise, both not containing the titular Alien/Xenomorph. So I might be even more weird then you...

And you know what, there is a trend now to re-evaluate number 3, which is the most depressing of the original Quadrilogy, so you might rewatch it also and be "trendy".

MemberOvomorphMar-12-2018 11:37 AM

Fair enough. I saw Alien 3 when it came out, still feel the same way about it: indifferent. I can understand the arguments for and against it. Not sure where that puts me on the "trendy" scale.

Saw Prometheus on it's midnight showing when it opened. I may have been in the minority who was just fine with the absence of eggs, chestburster, xeno's running around. I like the "primal" nature of it, HP Lovecraft all the way, who are these engineers and why did they make such effective weapons?

I don't pay attention to public grades, so that's cool to hear that the prequels are more liked than I realized.

I think the main thing is every person has their own personal opinions and well everyone is entitled to that, it what makes us all unique.  I think there is nothing wrong with enjoying the Prequels... why even AVP  (one has to Question AVPR lovers... joke, do any exist lol).

I have to agree with Aliens, i think some people will always like it because its a good Action Popcorn Flick...  but for me as i get older and older and after watching it over and over, the movie seems to have lesser interest for me...

Its still a well done Popcorn Flick,  but i just never see it the same way i used to in my early 30's but mainly teens and 20's it was awesome....   Now its well its good for what it is.

On the other side of the coin, Alien 3 has grown with me as i get older, when i first saw it and afterwards in the 90's i felt it was a bit of a disappointment.

Prometheus is a movie that i was a little disappointed with but its grown on me every time i see it.... while Alien Covenant has not done nothing to change my mind in spite of 4 viewings now.  I have appreciated it a bit for understanding its limitations, but it has not grown on me with each extra viewing.

My Ratings as of now are.

Alien 8.5/10   (unchanged)

Aliens 7/10 (down from 8/10)

Alien 3 7/10  (up from 5.5/10)

Alien R  5/10 (not changed)

Prometheus 7/10 (up from 6/10)

Alien Covenant 5/10 (unchanged)

And for FUN...

AVP 5.5/10 (popcorn fun)

AVPR 3.5/10 (oh dear)

I hold the idea of Prometheus up with the original Alien idea.  Prometheus is really a genius movie.  My only complaint is this (and I think it is common sense actually)

Why does Bladerunner 2049 get a almost a 3hr run time and we get Prometheus with a 2 hr run time.  I love both, but I think Prometheus deserved more run time.

That complaint aside, I still love Prometheus.  I also loved that fact that no one can tell that it is legitamently apart of the Alien franchise until the very end.  When I saw Prometheus, I saw it because it just looked like an awesome movie.  I didn't know that it was a part of the Alien franchise until I thought there was some copyright issue with the deacon at the end.  After that, I knew it was a part of the Alien franchise.  I love the idea that I couldn't tell till the end.  It really allowed me to watch the movie and really enjoy it and not get caught up with what a Xeno is going to do.

Long story short, I REALLY loved Prometheus.

My complaint with Alien: Covenant is the fact that Ridley Scott said, "This movie is going to scare the $h!t out of people."  Guess what, it didn't scare me at all.  So, that complaint is with the advertising really.

Still, I do have other problems with Alien: Covenant, but it isn't a bad movie.  It wasn't good either.  It was decent.  Still, I was a little disappointed in the fact that it didn't live up to what Prometheus set in place.

It is interesting how your perception and likes/dislikes change over time. I joined this site close to 2 years ago and from just chatting and discussing with you all, (people with similar enjoyment for the franchise but away from your usual direct sphere of influences) have evolved different views from the various films. Some of this can be attributed to just natural variation of taste, but most comes from the healthy and insightful discussions and threads on here :)

Before & after

Alien 8/10 (now up around 9)

Aliens 8/10 (down to about 6)

Alien3 9.5/10 (unchanged)

Alien Resurrection 6/10 (unchanged)

Prometheus 7/10 (now up to about 8.5)

Alien Covenant 5/10 (unchanged)

AVP & AVPR (unchanged at rubbish)

Welcome, see.

You like what you like and that is completely fine. It is interesting however to note how tastes can change over the years as IRaptus noted. For instance, I really like AC on the BR but saw it last night on HBO and was completely meh.

I agree about the Bowie reference especially with The Man who fell to Earth.

"I also loved that fact that no one can tell that it is legitamently apart of the Alien franchise until the very end."

I can understand this from the point of view to anyone who has never seen Alien or not really seen it much and those who never was aware Prometheus was supposed to be a Alien Movie prior to the Trailers.

Myself... if i had been in a Coma for years prior to Prometheus and then i never saw no trailers or anything, i simply woke from the Coma and then went to see Prometheus... i would have noticed it was a Alien connected movie quite early due to the Weyland company... but i would have been like... hang on whats going on here...   i would have been a bit confused until i saw the Engineer Bodys and would have made a connection to the Space Jockey, The Mural i would have noticed looked like a Xenomorph.. the Juggernaught i would have seen the connection.

But i agree some never did... and you raise a good point I Moon Girl because if every Alien connection was taken out... the Weyland Company and Weyland given a different name... The Mural looking nothing like a Xenomorph, the Engineer Suits looking nothing like the Space Jockey and Juggernaught looking nothing like the Derelict...  Then as a stand alone movie this would have been a THOUGHT PROVOKING movie like Space 2001, just slightly flawed.

Sadly those expecting connections to Alien felt left down and we ended up with a U-Turn to Spoon Feed the Xenomorph in Alien Covenant.

Honestly, I watched the original 4 numerous times.  I remember feeling like I was doing something wrong by watching Alien: Resurrection of TV one time when my parents weren't home because it was an R.  I've always been fascinated with the Alien movies, but never got into the detail until I joined this forum some months before Alien: Covenant's release.

After watching Prometheus, I looked up on the internet to learn more about the movie.  I came across this forum before and almost joined, yet I didn't.  I wanted to, but it just felt like a commitment in some sort of way.  I had other things I was more interested than talking about the details on Prometheus.  Fabulous movie.

I eventually heard of the future release of Alien: Covenant as being the sequel to Prometheus and got excited over a sentence that described the plot of the film on a movie website.  I got pissed when the movie was delayed on its release.  Then, as the day drew nearer for the Alien: Covenant movie, I just couldn't resist not joining this forum to discuss the details.

I'm have attracted to the Alien franchise for the sci-fi and the fear all wrapped together with a menacing alien creature.  Sadly, A:C didn't deliver on the fear so much.

So, I guess I'm an example of a casual fan of the Alien franchise.  I'll watch the movies when I see them on TV, but I never really worry about figuring out what the alien is called (the Xenomorph) or what company is paying for the minerals or what have you.

Plus, I would have to say that it has been awhile since I saw any Alien movie before I saw Prometheus.  I wanted to see Prometheus because of the sci-fi, epicness that the trailer displayed.

Of course, now I'm a part of this forum and I really enjoy digging into the details of the franchise.

The only thing I don't like about the Alien franchise right now is that I've seen all the movies so many times, yet I can't remember the first time I saw any of them because it was SOOOO long ago and I was a casual fan.  I can remember pieces of the movies where I got scared or really liked something, but I just can't remember for first, whole experience watching the movies.  I really wish I could have a whole first experience again on the original Alien.  That's not gonna happen, but I remember bits of my first time.  I was really little.  Still, I think I can put myself in a first timers shoes and just imagine what they're thinking.

So, a casual Alien fan, like me, could also not make the connections between Prometheus and the whole franchise.  That is, until the iconic Xeno-like alien appears at the end because of a facehugger-like alien.

Speaking of Prometheus

Has anyone been watching the Netflix show Damnation with Logan Marshall-Green (Holloway) playing an antagonist cowboy and strike-beaker?!

Although still not the most likeable character his new character is much more robust and less bland than Holloway. He does a good job, but he just seems to lack any charisma that makes you want to care for his characters.

Great show though!

"Honestly, I watched the original 4 numerous times"

Its totally understandable (your older post) in this context, because only ONE Alien movie really showed anything related to Prometheus and that was ALIEN, and by that the Derelict and Space Jockey and these scenes/shots were very brief, so indeed only those who paid a lot of attention to detail or had a fascination with the Derelict and Space Jockey would have made a connection with the Engineer suits and Juggernaught ship.

When i saw Prometheus one person i was with on my 2nd viewing had no idea what it was about, just that it was supposed to be a Alien movie and after seeing it they commented... ("i cant see how this connects to ALIENS at all") i mentioned its supposed to connect loosely to Alien as far as the Space Jockey and Derelict (i then had to explain what they was) and they was like "oh right i get ya.  But why was the Alien at the end so different" lol (so they said)

I found after seeing the movie a number of people at the Cinema were again confused how the HELL this connects with Alien, some even moaning that it was $"%%£$ as there was no Xenomorphs.

I think its kind of this General Consensus that lead FOX to consider this is what most fans wanted and why we had Alien Covenant.

And so indeed back to Prometheus as some of your last post mentions regarding the Alien Franchise,  and so indeed Prometheus expanded the Franchise and opened up a number of avenues that sadly Alien Covenant appeared to be closing.

The prequels don't suck and Ridley Scott is the best director this franchise had so far. And you are old enough to know that.

As for me, only 4 films matters: Alien, Alien3, Prometheus and Alien Covenant. I proudly own the steelbook blu rays for them.

I wonder if those who still like Aliens saw the film recently or it's because of some childhood memories.

Unfortunately the future of the franchise is in the hands of Disney and their target audience is that of Aliens, the popcorn fanboys.

Ah, such remarkable comments. And interesting categories like 'grammar nazis, SJW's, canon-philes, brown nosers, naysayers, trolls, or just your typical A-grade a-holes'.

I've always wanted to belong in a cool category.

'Thank you for providing the lessons learned during your decade of experience synopsis above in dealing with arrogance, brown nosers, name callers, and other lowly-named groups cited above that display shameful behavior. We will now be able to navigate it Gavin.'

Please, Ingeniero, help me. Which one is the coolest? 8D

As you know, I'm not a native speaker, so I'd like to ask: Do the categories 'brown noser' and 'A-grade a-hole' orbit the same body part?

Ati you're already in the coolest group. The group of Alien fans that get on here and share their love for all things ALIEN :P

Yes Brown-nosers do like to orbit a certain body part....

I refer you to the Urban Dictionary

Brown-noser:

a person who tries to please (esp. one's boss) so much that their nose turns brown from kissing their ass.

Naysayers seem to be the easiest cool guy club. It's all about arm chair no research keyboard warrior basement dwelling opposition.

Trolls are a mixed bag. I have to admit appreciating some well researched snark at times- but it takes work to troll like that. We had Id for a while- he was actually pretty good but pissed off too many of the wrong members unfortunately.

Welcome See, the more people that participate the better. People have different opinions and it is interesting to discuss things. I hope that you will enjoy it here.

My favorite alien movie is Alien 3, which it has been for years. Many things are alright about Prometheus, my main complaint is that many of the characters are either dislikeable or are just average. David and Janek were good in Prometheus. Hopefully we will see more about the Engineers in the next movie if there will be one. Alien Covenant was an android movie therefore a disappointment, I don’t  alien movies to see androids talking about creating things.
