Ridley Scott's Vision vs. James Cameron's vision:Which do you prefer?

I'd have to say prior to the release of Alien Covenant, this question would have been much easier to answer.Fans are often divided between the vision of these two directors vision for the Alien franchise, some say Ridleys vision is the only one that matters, while others might say he's becoming The George Lucas of the franchise.James Cameron's vision is polarizing as well. While he's made what is arguably the only film to equal the original Alien, many insist that his preference of action over horror,as well as the introduction of the queen xenomorph ruined Scott's Vision among other things. So do you think the series truly belongs to Scott who's arguably made the two most polarizing entries in the series (Prometheus and Alien Covenant of course)or should the series have kept James Cameron on board?Would the series be in better shape than it is?After all he's being called upon to save his own franchise Terminator. Both have rather different visions for the series,so who doesn't you think we would be better off with?

in reality at the time aliens was in the works the only path Cameron could have taken was the one he took. as he says himself, if he had gone down the route of the lone xeno it would have been just another 'alien'. I love them both equally but I prefer alien just a little more. I prefer the horror. to me there is horror in aliens but not in the same way. I also prefer egg morphing to the queen but im one who believes both morphing and queen have a place in the xeno life cycle.

Lol i just launched a separate topic regarding the egg morphing vs Queen argument. It's definitely one of the most divisive aspects of these two directors approach to the series.

haha I know I just commented. I do prefer Ridleys vision. I don't think he really had much by way of backstory to the xeno or derelict when he made it as it was only a B movie and I don't think he expected any sequels but I think the mystery is what captivated so many along with the sheer horror of the film. letting the viewer scare the shit out themselves by letting our imagination tell the story was a work of genius. Cameron definitely showed us more to the xeno but because he could really only go down the route of mixing action with horror we were obviously going to see more of the xeno though I think hes tried to limit its exposure as much as he could.

There wouldn't be a franchise if it wasn't for Ridley so has to be Ridley, it's his. We would have ended up with a b movie otherwise so in my eyes it's not even a valid question

Prior to the release of AC, I mentioned that I preferred the mystique of Ridley's original vision.

After watching AC that I liked but didn't thoroughly enjoy like Alien or Aliens, I feel like Aliens was more coherent than AC, and that just because it's simple it doesn't mean that it's bad.

In fact, Aliens is a pretty darn perfect film too with its own action-horror merits.

AC similarly to Prometheus is all over the place although to a lesser extent.

I like cosmic horror....So I like Ridley Scott's vision.

Cameron's take is great...but I've never liked the 'bug hunt' feel, would rather the 'bugs' be far more mysterious and deadly.

I think David is a modern day Freddy Krueger/Jason Voorhees with a Hard-Science reality. Can't really ever kill him.

Absolutely Ridley. As I've made it known before, I completely disregard Aliens now. It simply does not "fit". Heck, even Alien Ress. is better, over time. Ridley has gone astray and has been led too much by millennial corporate control/social media, so I cannot say that "A:C" was "his vision". Prometheus, while a "polarizing" movie, was certainly grand and fantastic and full of mystery, quite similar to the first "Alien", and I think had that path of Ridley's been followed, we would've gotten to see much more of it, sadly.

Also, just to add, Cameron's "vision" was to make another Hollywood mainstream film that pleases the masses and in doing so, his "vision" was to make as much money as possible. Ridley made something beautiful, a piece of modern art. Cameron is a crowd pleaser

I'll take the rich narrative of believable characters of Cameron films especially now that i have lost faith in Ridley. Now JC would have never made Prometheus which is awesomely bold and was nearly a masterpiece. Scott just seems to want to keep as busy as possible which I completely respect but it cost AC the story structure and proper execution it deserved. However I will not continue to support bad filmmaking which is what Scott Free gave me in Covvy.

torgo, Id definitely agree on the characters and AC being poor. for me I just think it wasn't a case of the characters being believable, it was the lack of character building. imo we didn't really get to know about them so didn't really have feelings when they got killed off. Tennessee was a good character I thought but the rest were just people who were there. even daniels couldv just been another member of the crew rather than the lead.

Ridley in every way.

Ridley, by far.

Ridley.

ali81 I'd say the lack of character building stays true to Alien79. There was hardly any character development in the original and Scott even said that was the point. We don't need to know about Kane to be horrified for him when he gets chestbursted.

I thought the first alien film gave a lot to character building. I felt lamberts fear, I saw how dallas just wanted to do his job n get home, I got the bond between parker and brett. I wouldn't say I wept when any of them perished but I would say I could relate to the scenes on the screen more than I could with covenant.

ali81 Lambert's fear is more acting than character building and I get what you mean with the subtleties that are there but they're unspoken, like in Covenant. We don't need to hear about the kids back home to relate but the way the characters are portrayed. Like Rosenthal and Ankor's relationship that isn't stated but you can find it through the little screen time they had together or after the wheatfield attack she lamented on his demise. I related with Oram's conflict, Ledward wanting to break off from science mumbo jumbo for a cig break, Oram and Karine's relationship.

suppose its just a matter of opinion. Cartwright did a brilliant job yes but lambert wasn't a coward, she was just wanting the f**k out of there. she had issues with ripley. I felt her fear through out the film

ali81 I concur, Lambert was smart and Cartwright was brilliant. I also agree that she wouldn't have been effective as Ripley and glad she was casted as such.

james cameron turned the xenomorphs into highly defeat able  creatures. also, he only semmed to make them have acid blood when the minor character shoot at them. there is a scene were vasques is in a vent with a xenomorph and she shoots it point blank into the head and she is not burned.

Totally agree with Timmy the Ultramorph here, Cameron made the Alien less scary and formidable, made them into mindless drones rather than the perfect killing machine that David is striving for. He undone Ridley Scott's masterful portrayal of something that was never seen before by making Aliens a Hollywood shoot em up! I'm glad someone noticed too about the selective acid blood ha, Vasquez was an idiot too, totally ridiculous over the top B movie stuff

Ridley.

Don't get me wrong, I very much enjoy Aliens, but it's Ridley's vision, even if they are sometimes fumbled while putting them to film, that defines the Alien series. Growing up in the 80's and 90's Aliens was bad-ass and made for great quotes, action sequences, and video games, but as I've grown older my love for it has tarnished.

Undoubtedly Ridley Scott's.

If Scott’s vision means focusing on the androids at the expense of human characters then I prefer Cameron. Both Alien Covenant and Prometheus are below the standard that I would like to see and both have Scott as a director. Maybe Cameron should direct the next one because it could not be much worse than it is now (which is not to say that both Prometheus and AC are complete pieces of crap).
